One small thing about packaging that I noticed is a big difference between the Scandinavian shops and the us shops is the excess packaging for mascaras. In Sweden we only have a tiny plastic tape around the lid so it’s noticeable if it’s been opened but other than that it’s sold like it is. It must be a lot of space for the store to store all items when they are bigger than necessary:O
Interesting. In general the USA tends to 'overdo' a lot of things. There is a lot of excess packaging, oversized meals, etc...I noticed in my travels abroad, specifically different parts of Europe there was a less is more approach in a lot of ways 🙌
I agree with your statement, however if the retailer chooses to not carry the brand because (or line of product) because it requires a special space on the shelf, then the brand is doomed from the start. Many brands are told how their packaging must showcase in order to fit into the space allowed to them. Wall-mart, Target, and even Amazon stray away from and even penalize brands for making their jobs harder.
I think your over simplifying the situation. Sure the boxes are a bit overpackaged but it depends on what angle of sustainability your coming from. The boxes isn't just for packaging but used for all the legal coms, ingredients etc that you cannot necessarily fit onto the tube itself and is dependent upon regulation of each country. So as well as a marketing aspect there's the legal side. Further more the tabs are great and sustainable but consumer rejection is high due to it being a new ritual and habit that consumers haven't adopted yet. Sustainable design cannot be oversimplified to just being it save on shipping so it's a good idea so consumers should naturally buy it. Consumer experience and consumer habit comes into play. What's the point of designing packaging that's ultra sustainable that no one buy because it's an alienated or new ritual that people aren't use to. You will end up with unused stock and wanted packaging. The hanging toothpaste is a bead idea but if you look at current shelves to have anything hanging is limited shelving space not to mention difficult to upkeep and keep tidy etc. We all want sustainable packaging but you have to make sure it to KS the relevant boxes and isn't sustainable just for sustainabilties sake.

So smart. Ditching the box also changes the aisle experience for the shopper and stands out from the competition. Tripple threat!
TRIPLE THREAT! Love it. Yeah, can you imagine those hanging next to all of those boxes?!

The crackable toothpaste is very cool! Never heard of that before
yeah, they don't have that same super refreshing taste as regular but cool concept
Can you do this for spice packing?
Very interesting. I make my tooth paste from natron (similar to soda) and coconut oil. U can add mint oil too
