@@sanjeevkhiani9476 This blind faith is exhibited by book based dogmatic religions like Islam and Christianity where the follower leaves everything in the hands of their 'master' because the followers consider themselves to be slaves who do not have a free will. If you read some news comking out of India, an Islamic cult there didn't take any precautions, proclaiming that everything is pre decided by Allah and in the process got infected & are spreading the virus all over India. In South Korea a Christian group did the same thing. Now Christians in the US are flocking churches despite lockdowns. In comparison all the Hindu temples are closed in India right in the middle of the festival season and Hindus are obeying government orders regarding lockdown. What Cmilk & Serpentza are saying about Hindus being superstions is actually the projection of their own Christian beliefs onto Indians. These guys actually don't know much about India. Superstition itself is a Christian concept. Good luck charms are used all over the world, not just in India. Humans just want to feel like they're in control of things, and the lucky charms have that psychological effect.

      @@30803080308030803081 Spot on -- they're wrong.
The religious behavior/belief is completely different in the different religions anyhow, Christians often see "god" as the decider, verses Hindus feel as though their behavior guides their actions (karma-like) and that they are in control but that there's a mystical force (universe) that uhh flows through the world and they are merely part of it.
When in India/Nepal/'Lank you begin to become one with that "mystical force" and the flow -- you may have a charm but you do not put your faith in it, but rather you feel protected so long as you remain part of the flow. You can walk in the street or run around carelessly, even drunk, and be safe. You just cannot stop and fight the chaos of the world, as if you do you'll "wake up" and be incapable of remaining part of the flow of the world, and get crushed under the wheels (literally) of those who are flowing naturally.
Not sure if it's instincts or herd mentality kicking in, but you truly do not need to even think to avoid collision. You can almost close your eyes and be perfectly fine -- so long as you do not acknowledge that you have closed your eyes and are helpless.

During a calmer moment after a particularly heart stopping overtake, I asked him "You could of killed us". His reply, "Karma, I would be our day to die". "But you could have kill the other guy as well", I added. With a compleatly straight face he replied, "Then it's his day to die".

When I was in Vietnam you used to see outlines of humans on the road from time to time. I had no idea what it was all about, but then a bus I was on hit a pedestrian. It stopped. We all got out and a policeman arrived. No one checked on the pedestrian. No one took a pulse. No ambulance was called. But someone did draw an outline around his body. It was the most disturbing experience I have ever had.

Just in case anyone wants to know. 1.India is not the worst, we rank average in the per million stats, people only look at absolute numbers without accounting for population density.
2.We are a relatively new country. People are still figuring out what it means to be responsible while being free. This affects every sphere of life from legislation, enforcement to individual action.
    3. Roads in India are non standardized, a six lane road may turn into a two lane street in the midst of a busy market which makes zig-zag driving a necessity. The ability to get rush through the two lane section makes the difference.

Also, back then, you were responsible for your taxi driver's accident. So, we never said, "Bali Bali Kap shi da", meaning hurry, hurry go! WELL, maybe we said that a lot just for the "thrill of the ride" as a young 19 year old GI. I was in my mid to late -20s so wouldn't do that, right...

I am a rather religious Protestant Christian, and what I have understood from my studies of the Bible is that sometimes there are things are out of one's control and the difficult part is distinguishing between what one can control( we are given free will) and what one cannot control.

Here in Slovenia you have the same fear that some kid might jump or be pushed in front of your car, so that he might drain you for money and there are people that will try to get hit when driving in order to get some money and we have quite different culture. We dont have "dont care for others" to the point it would be noticeable, but quite a lot of those things seems more connected with poverty (and law) than with a culture.

Me and my GF took the highway from Gensan to Maitum (nice road), Along the way I asked her what the speed limit is,she says there is none. That's the same road where her Mum and Sister were killed in a collision a few years back near Kiamba. Notice the planks of of timber they put out as barricades across the road to act as speed limiters?

Imo, Japan generally has the most courteous and law abiding drivers who always signal and flash their hazard lights to thank people all the time, and rarely have honking let alone road rage. I'd say the only exceptions of Japanese drivers being safe are big truck drivers who are in a hurry and drivers glued to their phones.

Interesting video again! From own experience I can say that the traffic in Italy, or at least in Rome, isn't all too great either. I was there 1,5 month ago (before all hell broke lose) and the driver of a little shuttle bus I had to take from the airport to the central metro station drove like a mad man. At the end I was happy to have made it in one piece. Also, not everyone seemed to care about the traffic lights as I was almost driven over a couple of times when I was crossing the street with green light. So it seems that it's not only in Asian countries that the traffic is "interesting" to say the least. Perhaps a suggestion for a future video: I have watched your videos for a long time now and I really enjoy them. However, it may be nice to make a video which is a bit more positive about China, perhaps talk about what you do still like about China or looking back at your time there. Of course you should always remain critical about China and pointing out its flaws is certainly important, but a bit of positivity may be nice too. Anyway, keep up the good work and stay healthy everyone!

In contrast to, the huge machinery, of a determined communist party. To divide other counties, control it's own people, and always look good, doing it. It must be hard to hold back, on what they really want to say.

I used to ride trail bikes in Papua New Guinea. We were a constant source of entertainment for both the locals, whether it be villagers and pedestrians forever making wheelie gestures to us, or the Public Motor Vehicles (PMV buses) trying to knock us off our bikes when passing or overtaking! It was a steep learning curve but you simply wouldn't survive on the road unless you had good timing, great acceleration / braking and the luck of the gods.....
The places I went, the scenery I saw and the villagers I meet along the way, all made the risk worth it!

Albania was fun on our motorbikes, especially roundabouts where the give way markings seem to have the opposite meaning. We were overtaken by a Lamborghini SUV doing about 130mph going into a town. Every town has 3 or 4 wreakers yards on the main street, and we passed 100's in our week riding around there. Only actually saw one crash though. Driving was all very selfish, but out of their cars the people were so friendly and welcoming I will be going back as soon as this crisis is over. Beautiful and diverse country that I cannot recommend visiting high enough

Boston followed by LA. When I was a kid we took a trip to the east coast and ended up driving through Boston. It was crazy. People were triple parked where we were trying to drive through. It was nuts and my very calm dad was like what the heck is this? lol Many years later I went down to LA where my sister was finishing up dental school so she could pull my wisdom teeth. When we left it was the wrong time. Huge freeway with 5 or 6 lanes was just stopped to a mere walking speed or actually stopped. It was crazy. Took us hours to get out of there.

30 years ago in Taiwan, the traffic is terrible. Double parallel parking on every road and mopeds swerve in and out of traffic and roads were dirty and incredibly dangerous.
But the government implemented a snitching program, where if you caught any traffic violation and submit the footage to the government, you will get a share of the fine. Since then, the traffic is so organized and smooth.

In Italy, traffic lights are just an advisory - you don't need to stop when they're red; the taxis don't anyway. Similar in Portugal in that it appears to be a game to see how many cars can get through a red light before being cut-off by traffic moving in the other direction, and when you do stop you MUST pull away within 1 millisecond when they turn green, otherwise everyone behind you honks their horns like it's a life or death emergency.

You guys have a very interesting take on driving in Asia as a whole and the rationale behind it. To throw another data point in: I lived in South America for just shy of a decade. At that time (late 80s-early 90s) where I was living was intensely capitalist and had been so historically for decades - Venezuelan companies made tremendous amounts of money off the oil industry and supplier relationships with North America and Europe, and there was a lot of wealth concentrated in the small upper echelons of society and pretty deep poverty in the other 60-70% of the country. There was a religious bent to some of the country as well, but not wildly so and certainly much more free-will based than what you describe. And yet, driving through the (wealthy) major cities felt like risking your life every time. People would, withaybe a cursory glance to their sides, fly through red lights without even slowing down. Speed limits were often not even suggestions - if you got pulled over, a bit of cash would get you out of whatever situation you found yourself in. I'm sure some of that sounds familiar! Obviously the government there now is basically a 180 from what I experienced, but I'm told the driving experience is largely the same on all counts. Makes me wonder if the reasoning behind why this sort of thing can be found in certain places is much more complex and hard to pin down than it might first seem.

I think it could just be a matter of accepting extremes like death to readily. Like the more impoverished an area is and the more used to death a culture is the more reckless they are with their lives. I've seen this not just with driving habits in Asia but safety all around, specifically with heavy machinery like cranes or constructionequipment, or diving fully loaded buses along narrow, crumbling cliffs or across raging rivers. It's insane the amount of risk you can find these people putting themselves through for no reason. Part of me also can't help but think that when there are so many people that each individual life becomes less important.
