Great question! Personally, the hobby helps me with my PTSD. The required focus allows an escape even when I build military subjects. The model club I belong to is about 70% military veterans, which definitely helps, but the community and channels like yours are added bonuses!

Cool Buddy, I struggle with depression and modeling is a positive act. I can do anything with models, paint a fighter jet yellow if I want. I get a jolt with getting a new kit, but I have to limit with that. My stash is too many, around 200, but I have been buying kit for twenty years. Modeling is a mine time I use to clear my mind. Good show.

I've fought depression most of my life, and then recently have had two serious shoulder surgeries that will end my racing a 1:1 dirt car. I have struggled with losing that camaraderie and a place I felt I belonged, as well as needing something to "tinker" on and think about to keep my mind on positive things to stay out of the dark places. I grabbed a model kit during rehabbing, and finding the YT community gave me inspiration, and I'm loving being able to let my creative juices flow. It keeps me from spending time on negative or unproductive things, like social media. I am back to modeling after 25 years off, and thinking I might even start a channel so I can join in as well! Thank you for posting this up!

It seems we all have some issue or issues we deal with. Modeling keeps my brain busy and active in order to deal with it trying to go in different directions all at once. It helps to keep me focused.

Thank you, Jason. I also have an autoimmune disease, Myasthenia Gravis (grave muscle disease). It's a neuro-muscular illness that is similar with the fingers, hands, etc. seizing up at times. THAT is in control, and I was just through neck surgery this past fall. Model building IS therapy, both mental and physical for me.....

I can definitely see that model building helps me with depression issues. Age, health problems and other matters conspire to bring me down, but sitting and building a good model makes me feel better. It's something physical I can look at, hold in my hand and think, "I did that!" 😊

Dude……you just made my Sunday! Thanks for doing this video. Strange as we get older we realize stuff like you put into words. Wish my kids could “leap frog” to our level. Lol. For me, modeling gets me away from the stresses of everyday life. Allows me time to re-focus on what is important and to slow down. Thanks again, man. Have a great day with Heather.

Modeling has had a huge impact on my life in a positive way. I grew up,building and stayed with it through my late 20’s. It faded away as my main hobby was playing guitar, and golf and shooting sports bringing up the rear. Over the past 13 years I’ve had 2 battles with head/neck cancer and got through the 1st one ok but the 2nd damn near killed me a few times. I had multiple surgeries in my neck and chest which lead to the loss of use in my left arm and nerve damage in my hand. That and a myriad of other complications landed me on disability.
I continued to work in a consulting capacity for a while but I knew that would end eventually so here I am, can’t play guitar, go golfing or any of the other activities I used to enjoy. I knew I needed to find something to do so I started watching TH-cam videos of model builders. At first it was Andy’s hobby HQ and other aircraft builders and thought to myself I could work through my challenges and get back into building.
The first thing I considered was that I live in a small condo ad how would I possibly display bunch of aircraft so I got the idea of building cars as they’re small and easier to display and I was off and running as of 2 years ago. Sorry for the lengthy build up but modeling is now a very important part of my life. It not only keeps my mind active and is therapy for my damaged arm and hand but it also gives me a since of purpose. Without it I’m sure I’d slip into a depression. My doctors are always happy to see my builds and know that I’m keeping myself active. My message to everyone out there would be stay positive and never give up.

Jason, the shortest way to sum up model building for me. I have more wrong with me than right, my disability doesn’t permit me to do much anymore, causing severe depression. Model building expands my limitations and makes me feel better about myself. With the exception of affordability, I can still create something and feel accomplished and feel normal
    again.

My motto for my Chanel is Build models forget troubles
and that is what I feel about it. Even when I don’t feel like building I just seat at the bench looking at my stash or studying about a project and for that 30 minutes or so before going to work or going to bed has been a therapy to my brain.

First, a "Happy Birthday" goes out to your wife and Second, thank you so much for sharing your personal story with your viewers. I wish you the best as you struggle with this disease. Mental Health is still looked upon as a" Taboo Subject" in our society especially by men and it needs to be discussed openly. I've been a modeler since my childhood days (6-7 years old)and it's always provided me with hours of enjoyment. This hobby has helped me cope with life's pressures immensely. During the pandemic, I was driving my son for treatments 240 miles a day, 4-5 days a week and listening to modeling podcasts helped me to keep my mind off things while making the trips. Then, before I retired(public school teacher for 30 years) it was a benefit for a physical & mental activity to help me unwind from the job. Now as I'm waiting for test results to come back for myself from the doctor, it's been a blessing to keep my mind occupied with modeling. Once again Jason, thank you for discussing this topic with the community.

Hey Jason, great video! Sometimes opening up to “your people” can be cathartic! I am glad our conversation on the Insanity Podcast can help people to maybe open up and get some things off their chests that may have been weighing them down (jeezes that was A LOT of metaphors!) as that can be a great help too! Keep on keepin’ on, my friend! Maybe I can get ya convinced to come on down to PennCon in September? You can make it a family weekend, as Hershey Park is not too far away, and makes for a good Sunday!

Happy birthday Ms Heather! Man, sorry to hear about your 'opportunity' with RA. When I worked for the nuclear utility I knew a couple guys that had RA. Both cases were fairly advanced. Model building transports me back to my youth (and that's a ways back in time lol), improves my mental focus, helps improve my problem-solving skills, and challenges me to learn new skills & push for excellence.

First off thank you for sharing your personal trial with us. Sharing it not only helps you but also anyone in the community that is going through the same trial. Thank you! I've been in this hobby since I was a little kid, I'm now 49 yrs old. But this hobby really helped me in my teen years. Especially when my dad was lad off his job after working with them for 23 yrs. When he finally found a new job he was working nights so I didn't see him until the weekend. It also has helped me through times of depression. Everyone should have some sort of hobby. It really helps us mentally. I love this community and the camaraderie within. I've enjoyed meeting with you guys and getting to know you all better.

Great topic Jason , I can honestly say if I wouldn't have started going quadrapoilgic and become unable to work which they found the problem in my spinal cord compression in my neck , by the time it was figured out and repaired the nerve damage was to severe for me to walk and have the balance to work anymore....so if that wouldn't have happened to me I don't think I would have gotten back into modeling. I'm not glad my situation came about but I am glad this hobby of modeling came back into my life because it helps the sanity so I have something to keep my mind busy and helps with my hand eye working together thing .... I just need to stop thinking I'm not good enough of a builder to do a channel and start one because I think it would help even more with my keeping sanity together and be a bigger part of this family / Community of model builders.....by the way my building skills have improved tremendous watching your channel and a few others getting tips and tricks so thank you guys for that too and hope I can find away over this little bit of fear I guess and get started with my channel....I already have a name ...when I do start it I'm calling it the lonely Midwest modeler because here in Illinois I can't find many fellow modelers of just cars and trucks anyway or there is only 1 hobby shop withing 20 miles of me and he's mostly into train so most anything I get is mail order....which I don't mind but a good hobby shop close would be nice incase you need a quick little something....anyway that my short of getting back into modeling after about 30 yrs...oh and yes it has helped doing models with quardenation....I'm sure I butchered that spelling but oh well and my builds have definitely improved over the past 4 years that I started building again.....again thank you for what you do for the modeling community buddy hopefully chat soon buddy

I'm battling cancer and modeling helps me escape from the world of tests, treatments and doctor appointments. I originally started as a kid, continued into adulthood but stopped for a while when work took up most of my time. I restarted after retirement and once I was diagnosed it truly became that place where I could always go to get my mind right. Excellent question, the best to you and anyone who uses this hobby as our own form of therapy.

I can't say the hobby has helped me get through a particular situation but my involvement in the YT community, especially as a content creator, contributes greatly to my "social animal" needs. As such, it definitely does support my mental health. I really appreciate the question and the discussion as mental health is such an important aspect of life. I have my own local and internet ministry as a pastor focusing specifically on combating anxiety, depression and suicide.

    Morning Jason.
    Just watched your last vidio.
    This hit home.
I have this issue where I feel that I don't fit in anywhere.
I so damn shy it really bothers me.
I have to force myself to talk to someone.
I had everything I could do to introduce myself to you at the NNL East last month.
Watching your and others vidios has help me fit in somewhere.
I love going to shows and showing off my builds, but I always find myself in a corner.
Can't thank you enough for chatting a bit.
Plus this hobby takes me away from all that's going on in the world and this just puts me at ease building.
So I guess you can say my hobby is my happy and safe place.
    Lol
Thank you for what you do my friend and I'll be watching.
Take care and best with your condition.
    Thanks Kevin

I have fought severe violent depression most all my life. I too suffer from an auto immune disease. About 75% of my body is covered with plaque psoriasis and I have psoriatic arthritis. I too am on injections but recent switched to a new injection and it seems to be helping a lot more. This hobby has helped distract my mind from the mundane and struggles. On line I dont have to show people my severely damaged skin. Finding the TH-cam side of model building is what motivated me to try another injection so at least maybe i can do videos showing my hands at the very least. Without this hobby I would be in a much worse state of mind then I currently am. The discovery of the podcast has only helped and inspired me. Keep up all the great content and thank you for what you do.

I don't have anything nearly as serious to cope with as you describe, Jason, but in answer to the question ..... I've been retired many years now, and getting near 70 years old. Outside of my working career, my "hobby" for 30 years was being a basketball and sometimes baseball coach in local schools that needed someone to fill those positions. I haven't been doing that now for about 5 years, and other than music collecting, I'm not really doing a lot of things to keep me mentally sharp. So I found model building channels on youtube one day, and recalled that 55 years ago I used to do a lot of that. So modeling is now helping me fill in the gaps of time I'd been dealing with since retiring from work and coaching. I haven't actually built anything new yet, but I'm collecting kits and acquiring new knowledge so I can do that soon.
btw, I still have those kits I built 55 years ago and they don't look so bad, but I know I can do better after seeing and learning about some of the work you guys do on youtube.

Judging by the comments

First off happy birthday to Heather 🎂 🥳 I build model cars because one, it's fun 🤪 two it helps me from going insane. This world we live in is insane. Building models helps me create art in a sense. I get ideas in my head and i build that creation or art piece. It can be stressful for me as well. There are soooo many model kits and 3D printed parts available, but i can't buy them all. In some cases it takes me 8 years to get a kit i want. For example the AMT '68 Camaro Z/28 kit that im building for the Street Machine group build, took me 8 years to get. So it stresses me out some times that we have all these awesome kits available and i have so many cool ideas, i can't get all these kits. I calm myself down and build what i have on the bench and slowly build a kit stash i would like to have some day. Great community question Jason 👍😎

I’m Closing in quickly, real quickly on 60, I’ve been glad to come back to model building a handful of years ago. It’s probably the hobby I’ve come back to the most since I started way back when. It’s the hobby I can most lock down and shut the world out while I’m at it. Nothing else does that for me. I’ve always wanted to be a big reader, I’ve bought many books in all formats, but I can’t shut the world out and read, only audiobooks on very long drives.

I only started in 2019.. I am 51 that feels like just a few years and stll feel new to the hobby..... I have had both my hips replaced and awating a second replacements....but i was not into the hobby when i was less able...in a nutshell it takes my mind of financial worrys....i have had countless welfare problems...had to fight a tribunal to get my welfare back... the stress of that worse than the illness...modeling takes my mind off that...i love cleaning up kits...the more flash and mold lines the better! i zone out! only thoughts on the kit

Great video and question, brother 😊 That's something that I did talk about once on video, back when I was still just motovlogging (2021 or before), but didn't get specific, and I don't talk about much. I may make a video, I may not be able to, there's ptsd from serving, but there's also signed NDA's covering about 15 years too. I will say, it's a damn struggle some days, and the times that I'm not posting about or building models, those are generally times I'm struggling because when it flares up I can't "get in the groove" or focus enough to build anything (for eg, last year was really bad most of the year, and I only built one kit...) 😞

Growing up I was pretty much a loner I really didn't have a social life plus suffering from depression. Building models was a great escape it kept me focused it helped dealing with issues. I'm not building now due to an injury. You are an inspiration to people like me

i also have rheumatoid arthritis. im currently taking Diclofenac and methotrexate. ive had 2 hip replacements and deformity to my left thumb. this hobby and its community have helped me cope with rheumatoid arthritis

I tried both those with no results, the methotrexate actually started causing live damage. I’m on Enbrel, and celobrex now. It seems to be doing the trick. So far I’m only developing nodules on my left middle, and pointer fingers.

Great question. I really appreciate you opening up and letting everyone know your life issues. Modeling can help in so many different ways. I'm going to create a video to cover this question. I've not been one to post a video answering these community questions as much as other content creators, but I plan to start to doing more of these. Thank you Jason, I much appreciate this and you. Take care my friend!

I returned to modelling during the C virus lock down and I needed something to do and break from working, did not realise how much it raised my mood , even the mistakes were something that made me challenge myself to resolve. I have suffered from depression a lot and find just going into my workspace creating bird houses, upcycling old doll houses, and got into modeling, but when I go in there its not always modelling just tidying and sorting, helps me focus on something not going to the dark place I go to. The live streams, and videos you and others do are also a great lift, feeling part of a community. So thank you ....

I am able to channel my focus and clear my mind of too many things going on at once while modeling. This helps greatly when my anxiety gets out of wack.

First, thank you for sharing with us.
As a kid model building, helped me overcome issues of depression, a.d.d. and anxiety. The anxiety still and depression still causes an issue and that is one of the reasons I'm trying to get back into building. As we have talked about my son passing away, the TH-cam modeling community has really helped me get through this hard time.

Sorry to hear that you have some medical isdues Jason. Glad to hear that your keeping it all together and that this hobby helps you. The modeling hobby and all of the channels I watch like yours is good mind therapy for me. I unfortunately have home issues including my two teen daughters who have a social anxiety. Ill need to change my life style when my girls reach eighteen. I will not leave them and there welcome to come with me when the time comes. These issues preclude me from joining group builds since i spend many hours with my girls and volunteering at their school. When i do build a few times a week i can relax and allow my own anxiety stay in control. Thanks again Jason for opening up about yourself and also posing this question to the community.
    Enjoy your week.

Your situation sounds similar to my work bro's issue. He has Mast Cell Activation Syndrome. He's pretty much allergic to EVERYTHING. He can't be out in the sun without having a reaction to it. As for me, all of my hobbies keep me sane as does music. My ex is coming over to help me do some yard work, and if I can, I'll do a video about how the hobby helped me.

Happy Birthday Heather. Great question Jason. OK modeling has helped me more than I ever could have imagined. I'm a person who doesn't go out much and I do not own a television. I retired this year and it gives me something to look forward to every day. But I was starting to like the modeling juice a little to much and it was affecting my building. I quite on New Years. I just started a youtube channel called Link's Scale Models @linkpoison5511. That never would have happened if I was drinking. The community is second to none. Well, that's a start of the hobby. Have a great day!!
