  • I have an upcoming Video about removing a Transmission and had originally figured I would create an "All in One" Video but ended up changing my mind cause the Video would have turned out to lengthy to watch.
    Stay tuned for the upcoming transmission change Video!!
    Thank you for watching.

    I have an 06 f150 I was dreading the idea of doing that seal since it's leaking, but you made it look easy I'm excited now

    My '04 Town Car is leaking here. I wasn't excited about dropping the axles and replacing the crush sleeve. This way is perfectly fine. Thank you for making it easy and simple to understand.

    Thanks for keeping your language clean. There are lots of automotive videos about all kinds of stuff that many presenters have foul language. So a BIG thanks.

    Good video, you did not mention what you measured with the caliper i believe was de nut with the end on pinion wasn't it ? . I think for better job was to remove cover inspect and refill with new fresh fluid, thank you.

      I "NEVER" had one that I could not get off even putting it on dry. I generally put something like WD or Kroil in there. I am going to endorse the idea putting lube on there as it will aid in assembly. But know this, if you go with lube be sure not to overtighten the assembly, if it came off dry and you put it on wet it is easy to "overshoot" the original location and once the sleeve has been crushed more you cannot back it off. That is my $0.02.

    I thought mined still leaked but it was just excess differential oil dripping from the old one which was destroyed. My 03 ram 1500. Best thing to do is clean the area so you can see if it’s still leaking or just give some time

    • @ralfsautomotive
      @ralfsautomotive  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It is not the Threads it is the backlash in the pinion. Normally done with an Indicator.

      @jimsmith7716 ปีที่แล้ว

      In another video the guy counted 6 threads. But had the nut marked where it should line up.

  • @RussMeister70
    @RussMeister70 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Was the measuring the length of the pinion from the nut in place of Torqeing the pinion nut?

  • @travisshain5268
    @travisshain5268 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I went a little too far when I tightened down the nut. My measurement was .29/.30 and went to .31. The mark on the nut was just a little to the right, maybe not even a 1/4 of turn. Do you think that will cause any issues? It seemed fine on the test drive.

  • @1995flyingspur
    @1995flyingspur 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    This guy is a pro & can go by feel but novices should probably index that pinion nut or count number of turns. Accidentally over tightening will over crush the sleeve and could damage the carrier bearings which is a whole nother bag of worms.
    Like I said, this guy could probably do this with his eyes closed and just go by sound and feel. The rest of us... IDK LOL

    • @ralfsautomotive
      @ralfsautomotive  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      LOL Maybe a good Idea. You can actually feel when the nut starts to bind.

    • @fernandobriseno8164
      @fernandobriseno8164 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's why he was using the measurement at the end making sure it was the same as the beginning, he wasn't JUST doing it by feel. Some ppl count threads.

      Without the holding tool one has to be inventive. Many many years ago I did make me something out of 1" flat bar I got in the hardware store and all i did is use a hacksaw to cut sections of the flatbar and welded(or bolt) them together with one long end that would catch the "Frame" would slip just over the Joke.

    Hi ralf ,
    Thanks for the great videos étc.
    Can please ask for your advice?
    I need to change the oil seal on my iveco daily van,but when I got under the van to do the job I noticed that there’s a lot of play on the pinion is that because the old seal is knackered if just went on and changed the new seal would that remove the play ?
    I really would appreciate your advice.
    Many thanks
    Curt
    👍😃

    • @ralfsautomotive
      @ralfsautomotive  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You change a Seal only to keep it from leaking. Excessive play has to do with worn components like Pinion or Ring Gear. Adjusting old gear sets normally results in a noisy rear end and is not a good idea at all.

    • @curtislovering3522
      @curtislovering3522 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ok thanks, umm in order to pull out the pinion out will I have to remove the drive from the wheels? Or can you just remove the crown ring étc and then the pinion?
      Cheers
      Curt👍😬😃

    • @ralfsautomotive
      @ralfsautomotive  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@curtislovering3522 That is rear end work and I would recommend not doing it without having experience. Not that you could not do it, it is just a very involved job as normally the entire rear end will have to be taken apart. I don't know about the IVECO however without looking it up.
