    Electronic records... keep a pad to take hive notes and then transfer to electronic for safekeeping and searchability. Before inspections review notes on hives, make up action plans before heading out... works for me. Have two green queens still going strong.

    • @JeromeBeeFarm
      @JeromeBeeFarm  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Nancy. I like that Idea. Problem is it depends on me to get them out down electronically. lol. I do look through my notebook and have a plan beforehand. Sometimes I write my action plan and results in a little hand sized note pad and then write down the results in the notebook later. Have a great week.

    I had a hive that went queenless after three weeks post swarm and leaving it with five good capped queencells. Today I had to do my first newspaper combine as there was no brood, dwindling numbers and no way for them to cover frames of capped brood, and a frame of open brood/eggs. This is so pivotable a technique to learn and implement and although the work of combining the hives is the easy part, the not so easy part is recognizing the condition of the hive in decline and being able to project where it will be in a week or two. Good note keeping helps in these situations as does video records, but being able to push through the urge to save a dwindling hive because of the number of hives matters more than the survival of the bees often throws off beginning beekeepers and results in their first dead-out without a real cause like varroa or poor healt through the winter. The importance like you show with OTS queen rearing can make a big difference in a total apiary health because a weak hive can be susceptible to disease can get passed onto strong hives during robbing of that weakened hive. Always so much behind the scenes of these videos in the why we do things that often doesn't get explained. Darren, thanks for putting your trials and tribulations out there for all of us to learn from!

      Hey Squatch. Thanks for the insightful comment. My biggest mistake I’ve made in new splits and combines is not having enough bees in the hive and succumb to pests. Usually hive beetles. I even had this happen just last week. Strong population is key. Have a great week.

    Those darn laying workers. I dismantled my 5 frame nuc today. I found a frame with eggs and 1 day old larva from another colony. I carried the nuc 60 yards and shook all the bees in the grass. Pulled out the 2 frames they were filling with drones and froze them. Put back the nuc with just the new egg frame and 2 resource frames with 2 foundation frames. The workers were waiting for me when I got back with the hive. I am crossing my fingers. If that fails they get shook out and hive removed. I hope everything works out for your bees. Thanks for the videos.

    The donor hive you picked was a good one. Long lived queen and gentle bees. What more can you want.
    Fred Dunn has been talking about a app that you can download on your phone and record and keep track of your hives. You can upload picture in it also. It can alert you if you forgot to check a hive. There is a cost to it but I'm sure more techy guys like you would like it.
    1.8 inches of more rain? Please send it up here to MN. 102 F yesterday and the next 10 days are all forecasted to be in the mid 90's. YUK I like 70-80's. LOL

      Hey Russ. Yeah I never seen a 3 year old queen perform like that. I’ve tried an app before and I like the techie side of it, but using the phone in the field was a pain. That’s why I prefer the old school notes. That sunset was from the night before this video when I did the laying worker combine on #1 after the storms passed. I was lucky I captured it. Usually I’m running around doing other stuff when the sun is setting. Thanks for watching. Have a great week.

I need to go to Denver Co. but that to far, I need to see my cousin in Oklahoma City ! that a 5 hour drive ! These Texas speed limits of 80 mph are no fun to drive on! Got trucks doing 60 mph, and cars flying at 100 + mph its like a race track ! 70 mph is the PERFECT SPEED LIMITS 70 mph is flying speed to get off the ground, WANT TO FLY? TAKE A PLANE ! Cause i got a fast car! My Super Bee! don't mean i have to drive 180 + mph 😆 But give me a quarter mile to run? I WILL RUN IT ~ HEAR ME CORVETTS

    • @JeromeBeeFarm
      @JeromeBeeFarm  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      A nuc has probably had a brood break in its development which is a natural varroa control. If it were me, I’d wait til October, or when the queen slows laying going into winter in your area.

      @@JeromeBeeFarm You disagree with the picture on page 48 of Mel's OTS book? It should be eggs not larvae?

    • @JeromeBeeFarm
      @JeromeBeeFarm  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don’t disagree. This is just the way I do it and it works. The bees will pull down some of these as well as some of their own. The best queens come from youngest eggs. If you are grafting, that’s a different process and want the wet cells (which I have not attempted to graft). Go to my play lists and check out OTS queen rearing and look at the two videos I did last year that shows the notching and also I identify exactly which cells the the bees chose. If I remember correctly, there was some young just hatched larvae next to an egg notched and the bees chose to pull down the egg. I should post an update to this soon. Thanks for watching and commenting.
