  • How To Tell If Hive Is Queenless is a TH-cam beekeeping video explaining how easy it is to determine in hive has a queen or not. A normal hive isn't this noisy, and the honeybees looks very unstable.

    I’m always amazed that I hive can go queenless. They are capable of making a queen and they know when they’re queenless

    • @russellkoopman3004
      @russellkoopman3004 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Maybe the queen was sick and stopped laying for a week before she died. By then there were no young larvae to make a new queen. Just a SWAG.

    • @russellkoopman3004
      @russellkoopman3004 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Or they did make a queen but the virgin has only a 75% chance of making it back. She can get lost and enter a hive with a queen and they will kill her.

    If anyone doubts that Barnyard truly has gentle bees as David always says, you need not worry. This year is my first time getting a package as I’ve always just done splits in years past, but wanted to get some fresh genetics into my apiary this year. It’s been 3 weeks now and I can say that David’s bees are truly the most gentle I have ever worked with. No need to even wear a veil and even when pulling frames to check that the queen was laying (and she is!) I didn’t even use smoke and the bees couldn’t care less that I was in the hive. They have already fully drawn out 8.5 frames and the deep is now full of pollen, bee bread, brood, nectar, and their even starting to cap honey. When the new brood starts emerging later this week I think I’m gonna have to already add another deep to the girls. They are far and away out producing my other colonies. I’ll be reserving a much larger package order for next spring..........

    I had a hive with 200 lbs of honey stacked 8 feet high and when I pulled the honey in August they were queen less. Why did they go queen less? I don’t want to tear down 8ft and 200 lbs of honey supers in the middle of July to check for a queen. Do you know of an easier way?

    Maybe someone can help me. I have never had bees before and I did a hive removal to get my first hive today. I put them in a five from nuc and let them be for about five hours then I went to find the queen because I wasn’t sure if I had got her when I got the hive. When I smoked the hive the whole hive left and swarmed in a tree above the apiary. Can someone tell me why they swarmed on me. I was able to get the queen back in the box and put her in a queen clip until tomorrow when I want to try and clip her wings.

    • @jward860
      @jward860 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Unless you had brood or something holding them to that hive they can easily swarm off and leave. New packages will do this sometimes. Best thing you can do next time is either dump them in a nuc with some brood from another hive or do not disturb them much in the first few days while they settle in.

    How many bees get smashed when you remove and replace the slats etc?

    • @julieenslow5915
      @julieenslow5915 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Beekeepers try to move slowly, and the bees move fast. So as much as you expect that everything a beekeeper does is going to squash a bee - it actually does not happen that often. As logic would tell you - bees don't like it when you go about smashing bees, so the beekeeper learns quickly to be careful. This is especially true if you see beekeepers with little or no protection on (the bee suit) - because if they do that too much, the bees will react.
      Or were you just assuming that beekeepers like to destroy parts of a colony they spend huge amounts of time and money nurturing?

    • @zaaz8656
