It would be interesting to see a video about the origins of French/German rivalry ("Erbfeindschaft") that seemed to dominate central Europe for centuries before finally being settled post-war. After all France and Germany appear to be the driving forces behind the European Union as well. Just now working together in most aspects.
That video would have to start in the 19th century when this "Erbfeindschaft" was invented to whip up popular support for an aggressive nationalism. :)
@varana312: nope, it would have to start much, much earlier. France took large parts of Western Germany during the 30 Years' War. They also took the chance to annex teritorries at a time when the Osmans (Muslims) were invading from the South East and Germany was weakened on plus of being weakened from the Catholic/Protestant dispute. Strasbourg was even conquered during peace time.
@unci narynin: a video that would show the truth about French agression would be deemed undesirable. There was a really great German-language video showing the historical expansion of France at the cost of Germany, but it seems to have been taken down.
I trust rewboss from the (in this case) neutral british perspective to cover this topic in a way that looks at both sides and doesn't offend either French or Germans living today. At least I'm quite confident that the vast majority of people in both Germany and France are happy to have left this ancient dispute behind. At the risk of offending others elsewhere in the world ... most old conflicts haven't been resolved in such a satisfying way. Turning your back and pointedly ignoring each other is not the same thing as peace but that's what's not happening between France and Germany.
Well, the relations have become certainly surprisingly well, given the history of France being the heritable enemy of the Germans for a reason. Still, even after WWII, the French side didn't suddenly behave like the best buddies. Aside from reverting the changes from WWII, the French occupied German territories and even tried to take in the Saarland for good, which wasn't successful, because the people voted against it: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saar_statute France was actually rather reluctant to allow the unification of West- and Eastgermany (or rather: the integration of the remaining middle-eastern German countries in the Federal Republic of Germany after the eastern German teritorries had been annexed by Poland and the former Czechoslowakia). It took the participation of Germany in the Euro and the German commitment to a stronger, common European identity to allow for that partial reunification of the Germans: www.spiegel.de/international/germany/the-price-of-unity-was-the-deutsche-mark-sacrificed-for-reunification-a-719940.html (if you have no script blocker and don't want to turn of adblocker, you can also read this: voxeurop.eu/en/content/article/351531-you-get-unification-we-get-euro ) In comparison, despite having deported lots of ethnic Germans, which wasn't the case in France, Hungary has remained the only true friend Germany has. It was the country where German citizens from the German Democratic Republic and the Federal Republic of Germany could freely meet and the place, from where the Iron Curtain was teared down with the Pan-European Picknick (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pan-European_Picnic ), sponsored by the last crown prince of Austria-Hungary, Otto von Habsburg. They also took lots of pressure for the German-speaking countries, the Federal Republic of Germany and Austria by protecting their borders from illegal border entries. Compared to that, what did France do? They might have not deported the German minority, but that might be just because they didn't come under the sphere of influence of the Soviets. Instead, assimilation pressure was the highest for the Germans in France compared to the Germans in Italy who are actually still an ethnic majority in South Tyrol. In a recent press briefing, the Hungarian prime minister, Viktor Orbán, said that he had told Angela Merkel that Hungary is the only country outside the German-speaking countries in Europe where one can recieve an education in German from kindergarten to university: th-cam.com/video/5PJV5W3kX7o/w-d-xo.html You would think that France, our supposed new best friend would be in the forefront, but no, only Hungary has a complete German-language university outside the German-speaking countries: en.study-hungary.com/universities/andrassy-university The Saarland even plans to become bilingual in about 25 years: www.dw.com/en/french-for-all-in-germanys-saarland/a-17404050 However, there are no such plans in France. Instead, they even took out the name "Alsace" and put together the departments of conquered German territories with others as "Grand Est": en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grand_Est That being said, it would be interesting to get a third position about the whole conflict. After all, there were also German countries who had fought on the side of France in some wars.
Studying history is painful to me: I'm confronted every day with human stupidity already and studying history makes it clear that it is not just a particularly unlucky phase during which I had the misfortune of living. It also makes clear why so many people have apparently senseless hobbies such as philately, hiking in deserted mountains, music playing despite being tone-deaf and knitting. They are not senseless, at all.
Jackpot! a rewboss video and history and the holy roman empire!? bam. aces Whats next the Guelphs; the House of Welf and the British monarchy? Ernestine duchies? The role of saxony in the imperial diet after the reformation?!
Did it happen by accident or did you arrange the Picture Postcards in the Background on purpose? They are forming the FRG's ground plan! At least, this is what I believe to see:)
Nope, the title was indeed ''king of the romans'' - the whole ''Germany'' thing only started to hold at the time as a way to describe the language of the common people (as opposed to Latin) and was not connected to any poltical or geographical region (outside of just being the place where German was spoken). To my knowledge, it was only emperor Maximilian, who started to call himself king of Germany, at a time when it had become undisputed that the king would in fact always become emperor and didn't have to got to rome to do so.
but the _german_ prince electors voted for the _german_ king - not the _roman_ king. this _german_ king could become emperor of the holy _roman_ empire. but that was the business of the _roman_ pope - not of the _german_ prince electors.
+montanus777 Are you calling it _german_ just because of the language of the majority (not even all)? You must realize that there was no Germany. The concept of Germany didn't exist for about another 800 years or so. At that time it was separate states like Saxony, Brandenburg, Mainz, etc... Rewboss named the ones who were important enough to elect the common emperor.
What about the "New Hambach Festival"? th-cam.com/video/rhFqn9BWK0c/w-d-xo.html Interesting that "rewboss" seems to have been there, but no video of it so far. Is there anything planned?
Interesting .. and i think i kind of switched off half way. Uh, i wonder how many Germans actually know about that time. (not too many i assume) For me, government history in school was much easier for the middle ages. it can be summed up as "we didnt have a government then" - end of lesson.
He gives the answer right afterwards. In order to become Roman Emperor he had to be crowned by the pope. Also the German territories were a major and most integral part of this empire, so why not call yourself king of them.
"...why not call yourself king of them." Because there was no common concept of being "German" at the time... the territory consisted of separate states like Saxony, Brandenburg, Mainz, etc, all with different rulers... Rewboss named the ones that were important enough to vote on the common emperor. Something that could be called "Germany" existed at the earliest since 1871... centuries after
+Thulyblu While I'm with you on the title ''king of the romans'', I'd dispute your last claim - people definelty defined themselves as German, but not because the belonged to a German nation or something, but because they spoke German. Nonetheless, the name ''Germany'' was already in use at this time, refering to the places, where peopel spoke the German language - not only among the commoners, but also in legel texts. For example, in the Golden Bull the Archbishop of Mainz was given the title of ''Archchancellor of Germany'', contrasting with the bishops of Köln and Trier being Chancellors of Italy and Burgundy respectively, refering to the italo- and francophone part of the empire. Also, to talk about the HRE as an confederation of states is correct in Modern times past the Treaty of Westphalia, but in the time we're talking about, it' was, and worked like, any other feudal realm of Europe, all of wich consisted of somewhat autonomus vassals.
The title was "Rex Romanorum", which literally means "King of the Romans" -- and that's how it's translated into English, although in German they say "römisch-deutscher König" which literally means "Romano-German King". The Holy Roman Empire saw itself, as I said, as a continuation of the old Roman Empire. At the time, they had a concept of "translatio imperii", which means that history is viewed as a linear succession of rulers. In the year 800 it was decreed that the Roman Empire didn't die in 476, but continued -- however, the office of Emperor of Rome was vacant from them until Pope Leo III made Charlemagne the new emperor. The German word for "Emperor" is "Kaiser", which comes from the Latin "Caesar". Not until the 15th century did the empire call itself the "Holy Roman Empire of German Nations" and people began to identify themselves by the language they spoke.
Where my mom came from in Germany...they had a Bishop Elector...I know there were Ecclesiastical Electors (Archbishop, Bishop, and at lest one Abbot) but I know most were Prince Electors...the HRE was a fascinating, and chaotic mess...British History so much more comprehensible...🤔😊😂 (Ah, yes...the Babylonian Captivity...:-D) aaahhhh...such a chaotic mess...
President Trump isn't calling for a regime change in Germany; he's asking Angela Merkel to 'fess up to some unethical practices she's been involved in, which includes being honest with her people. What's more is, Angela's name has never been pronounced correctly in the USA, until Trump came into office. To me, that's a definite sign of respect. What the Germans also need to realize is that Trump's grandfather came from Germany, and that's very important to him. He's proud of his German heritage, and he wants to see the Germans have a better life than what they've had since WWII. Many children of German immigrants to the USA want nothing more than to see the Germans get a fair shake in life for a change. They've suffered far too long, and every moment of it unjustly.
I said Trump has been _accused_ of calling for regime change. And that is a fact: the accusation was made by Sigmar Gabriel, the former vice-chancellor. You can disagree with Gabriel if you want: this is part of a debate about how much influence countries should have over each other, and entirely relevant to my video, whether or not Gabriel was correct.
_"he wants to see the Germans have a better life than what they've had since WWII [...] They've suffered far too long"_ What the hell are you talking about?
That's rather typical of right-wing propaganda in the US: if you listen to them, it sounds as if Europe is a third-world hell hole, when in actuality, in many of the points they make, we're actually better off than the US. But then, the right wing in the US doesn't have much respect for facts. Those are all fake news, don't you know, lies by the librul media. Believe you me.
I was well aware that your statement about Trump didn't originate with you, but now I know who did originate that statement, or at least, one of the people. Thank you very much. If you look at the recent NATO meeting - the video made before the breakfast coffee was poured, and the video of the press conference of Trump's visit to the UK, which includes Theresa May's initial statement and her answers to questions, you'll have a much better understanding of what's really going on. The UK doesn't want another vote, which makes perfect sense. Soros, and his Open Borders Society, is the force behind the immigration problem. No one wants him for a world dictator, and I'm sure you would be in full agreement with that. Because of Trump's work toward world peace (he's a nationalist, and recommends nationalism for every country on this earth - not Nazism, but Natioalism), he's had more assassination attempts made on his life, and the lives of his children, than we can count. Good people don't even try to kill people, much less attempt to kill national leaders. How many assassination attempts have been made on Angela Merkel? Putin is no angel, but he doesn't want WWIII any more than any other sane person on this earth does. If you understand, in great detail, what's going on in the USA, you'll understand what's going on in the world, and the main stream media is only good for the purpose of knowing what the lies are. I strongly recommend you watch those two videos - the NATO meeting before breakfast and the press conference in the UK. There is a video of the press conference after the NATO meeting also. By the way, I was delighted, after all the negative things I've heard about Theresa May, to hear in her own words, that they are working very hard toward exiting the EU. You may not be aware of it, living in the middle of the EU, but the EU is just another Marxist attempt toward ruling the world, and the very same people are behind it, as were behind Soviet Russia, Communist China and all the other countries, who were behind the Iron curtain.

After all your a migrant & could use this outsider position to engage instead of surfing the ignorance waves.. Your one-sided agenda is questionable no matter you like it or not. Germany is more than fairytale & past disputes. Why don't you visit the local mosque & discus todays present issues? Bcs you prefer to play the holy 'Besserwisser'.. I worked as craft man (naver..) in Germany. This country & people deserves more than your superficial attitude.. Relate to this critique or have fun in your comfortable bubble Skål 🍻
I don't have to do anything of the sort. I don't have to pander to your personal phobias and obsessions. There are other people doing that, and you're at perfect liberty to watch their videos and read their blogs: but there's more to life than that, and I am not going to change the focus of this channel to suit you. Not only that, but you have no idea what I do when I'm not making videos. You have no idea about the level of my political engagement, about who I talk to or what I say to them. All of that is my private business, and you know nothing at all of my private life except what I decide to reveal in public -- which is very little.
The Holy Roman Empire was such an interesting, complicated, MESS.

Dear Andrew, I really appreciate Your knowledge of German history. Every single video of Yours is interesting.

Try engage in widely societal issues instead of being offended.
