I listened to this on my car radio as it began to unfold. I was frustrated with the slowness of mission control in finally accepting that the astronauts were in serious trouble. As an airline mechanic I was trained to always be ready to respond to the worst possible situation. I suppose it is human nature to deny the reality of sudden and unexpected bad news. In the end it was a very, very close call.

I was born in 65 so I remember watching the news and hearing the radio. We used more radio. You know. When it splashed down the house went wild.

I'm not sure what you're referring to. They figured out within minutes that it was a serious problem. About 16 minutes after the explosion, the Flight Director said the following to everyone in Mission Control, which I think sums up his thinking at the time very well:
"Okay, now let's everybody keep cool. We got the LEM still attached. The LEM spacecraft's good so if we need to get back home we got a LEM to do a good portion of it with. Let's make sure that we don't do anything that's going to blow our CSM electrical power with the batteries or that will cause us to lose fuel cell number two. We want to keep the O2 and that kind of stuff working. We like to have RCS but we got the command module system, so we're in good shape if we need to get home. Let's solve the problem but let's not make it any worse by guessing."
It's clear that he realised this was potentially a situation where just getting the crew home alive was going to be the priority and he was thinking about how they were going to do that, but he wanted to keep everyone calm and not rush anything. They were certainly more than than ready to respond to the worst possible situation.
I can imagine the NASA Public Affairs Office were downplaying it initially and you were probably listening to what was coming out of the PAO on the radio. That doesn't reflect what was happening in Mission Control. You can listen yourself to what was happening in Mission Control here:

It's 8:30 PM looking at a full moon as I sit here watching this video. Looking up knowing now, that somewhere between me and the moon those three men were in a fight to survive. For an ordinary man it's hard to even imagine what was going through their minds. To be able to remain calm speaks volumes about the training they received.

The saving grace of Apollo was the redundant engineering and simple beauty of it. Now, when I say simple, I mean logical signal and power pathways that gave them such flexibility. The rocket and the CSM was complicated, but, because the ground knew their systems so well, with the help of the skill of the crew, they made it back home.
Not to forget, it was fortunate when the explosion happened. Any time later, and they were screwed.

Had it happened after going into Lunar orbit it would have been dicey, probably fatal if they couldn't fire the SPS engine on the SM to break back out of Lunar orbit. It would have been interesting trying to do that maneuver with the DPS on the Lunar module. Anytime after the landing or during the coast back to Earth would have been absolutely fatal.
In a way I think the reforms after Apollo 1 helped to save 13. Given all the condensation in the cockpit, not a single circuit shorted. But also on the ground, the culture change within NASA where everyone knew what they had to do and did it. They snatched these men out of the jaws of death in deep space and got them back home. The highest point of the Apollo program in my opinion.

Always interesting to hear the real story from the horse's mouth. I remember this event in 1970 vividly. Not much interest was paid to the mission until the disastrous episode occurred. Within hours, it seemed the entire planet was pulling for the safe return of the astronauts. Howard's movie was brilliant and factual except for a few situations for dramatic licence.

I met Jim Lovell very briefly when he signed my copy of his book _Lost Moon_ (later renamed _Apollo 13_ and made into the movie). He impressed me then as a very real person, friendly and personable, focusing on the person in front of him (me!) and not rushing to the next one. He is one of the true heros of the early space program; doing his job without ego.

There is no way to "copyright something illegally". "Copyright" is a noun, not a verb. It isn't something you do; it is something you have. You have it automatically after you create or publish a work. You need to learn the first thing about the system before you claim it is broken...

The initial call was "Okay Houston, I believe we've had a problem here." Houston said "say again" and the response was "Houston, we've had a problem."
The movie changed it to the present tense because it sounds more dramatic. With the benefit of hindsight, it's also a more correct statement of the situation - the problem certainly wasn't confined to the past!
