Howie is an excellent facilitator of test cricket commentary. Calls the ball, but also casts the spotlight on the legends in the box. Easy, interesting listening.

Cricket on Channel 9 was just a quintessential part of my childhood. Me and my granddad parking our butts on the seats for the day every day during the summer, every summer, listening to Richie, Bill, Tony, Tubbs, Heals, Chappy, I'll never forget those days. Granddad passed away in late 2015 and even as an adult I'll always feel like a big kid watching the cricket, even thought Channel 7 is nowhere near as strong. Watching this getting to relive those days with Tubbs and Howie has been a blast!

I grew up watching cricket fanatically. Waking up as early as possible as a 3-4 year old and watching old tapes. Loved cricket up until I couldn’t play anymore as a teenager due to an eye condition. But over the years the thing that has really made me fall out with it was not having the whole channel 9 production behind it. I guess you could say I’m not a pure cricket fan. I just loved the way those old commentators sounded. And as Mark mentioned, or at least indirectly mentioned, the art is in what you don’t say. I still follow cricket now and love it but not like I used to. Miss the old days and I hope they can make it as great as it was again someday.

It's hard to see the stars aligning again to reproduce those amateur era stars. They played for love of the game in an era of full employment and low house prices. The modern world is less forgiving of dreamers.

Even the music for the channel 9 cricket coverage was the best. Along with ‘ Soul Limbo ‘ on the BBC. I miss Richie, Bill, Tony and Ian on commentary. Even though we didn’t get to watch and hear it that much in England. Especially before TH-cam and social media. We would get a bit of the coverage on a break for rain but that was about it.

Richie was such a great commentator for a number of reasons - one of which was that he was an old-school journalist and knew how to report without over embellishing. Yet his method of delivery was always entertaining as well as informative.
Commentators these days use so many cliches and spout so much drivel. Mark has his own style, but he's always added to the vision and isn't one to (obviously) talk nonsense just to fill the silence.

On this discussion, give me Richie Benaud's commentary every day of the week. Benaud's understatement let the moment speak for itself as opposed to Bill Lawry's OTT hyperventilation. Enojyed this discussion, but there is no comparison in quality of cricket knowledge of commentators of the past (Benaud, Lawry, Chappell, Greig) vs those of today (ie Fleming, Brayshaw). Fleming in particular can stick his Avenues of Apprehension, Boulevards of Bamboozlement and any other type of road where the sun don't shine! The sooner he is off the airwaves the better!

I think you will find what made those commentators you mention being not very good is down to channel 9 having 3 commentators in the box instead of two. Also I bet you grew up listening to the big 4 so when new commentators joined the coverage it was always going to be different and hard to get use to.
