You have got a calming voice, lovely accent and a way with words! I could listen to you for hours, though I still prefer it when I don't have to can figure DSM out on my own :) All the best
Thank you so much Jim. I was doing something trivial. I had a complex design that I knew I couldn't print. So I sliced it up into components and then I wanted to orient them perfectly on the XY plane. So I took my largest piece, created a plane on it's flat XY base and then realigned all the other components to the plane using Upto (U) and voila all the parts are perfectly aligned with the print bed.
@JimTaylor42 Now that I get really familiar with the software and have a firm grasp on how to use it, they neutered the free version and made the pay version too expensive for me to afford given that I use it for hobby use anyway. If they halved the price I would consider it, but it's cheaper to just learn something else that I can rely on for now. Thank you for the videos. I'm sorry they made this decision, which surely impacts you as well.
@@MisterDeets I totally agree with you. This is why I am doing less and less with DSM - only enough to keep my channel alive. I've had one or two paid commissions but not enough to justify using the new subscription versions. I am taking the opportunity of having more free time to brush up on a few of my other interests - Python and C++ programming.
@@JimTaylor42 I have 6 years worth of projects tied up in that software now. I have the STL files that I can use, but that is significantly more difficult to work with. I may have to pay 1 month just to get my projects out of it in some cogent and easily editable format if that is possible. This all caught me off guard. Very unhappy with how this was executed.
I can't thank you enough for taking the time to create this video. I'm new to this software and it's been a bit of a learning curve for me although relatively simple, these little things such as aligning have been very difficult! Thank you thank you thank you!!!
Thanks for the great video, I had no idea this capability was built into DS. I am continually blown away by how versatile this FREE CAD package is. I've tried to learn to use CAD packages for decades but never made any progress. Now that I am designing objects for 3D printing (I'm 70, this is my retirement hobby) I've found I need to learn how to use one. Design Spark Mechanical is free, and seemingly more intuitive than most other packages I've tried, and with the wealth of great tutorials available from you and other great TH-cam channels, I'm finally making headway in becoming competent enough to actually design parts and objects for 3D printing. I had been using Tinkercad, which 'made sense' to me, but it couldn't handle complex objects, which rendered it useless to me. Again, thanks for your many great informational videos.
Thank you so much for making this Jim. Even after 2 years, you're still helping others. I was tearing my hair out trying to make things line up as I can in Blender. DSM is a really nice program but you have to know all the secrets. :)
I had exactly the same problem trying to align a bearing on a shaft. Following this, I was at last able to do it. An excellent presentation filling an obvious gap in the official tutorials. Thank you.
Thank you! I have struggled with this operation like a mad man. I got three out of four holes concentric, and had no idea how I did it. I literally gave up after 2 hours of trying that fourth hole. I'm getting ready to watch this for a third time. I would have never got this without your video.
1:53 .. Thanks for a very helpful video, Jim. Allow me to add a fourth method of selecting an object, that is of course the second button in the 3D window, "select component".
I had the same issue when I started using DSM. Someone from the forum helped me figure it out. Jim, you can also chose the anchor tool and then click where you want the anchor instead of dragging the anchor with the mouse. Thanks for this very useful video.
Thank you very much Jim. On older versions, there seemed to be an "Assembly" section on the design tab. This works too but I'm not sure if it's more entuitive than the prior alternative
This is exactly what I was looking for the assembly tab, how do you bring parts together to make an assembly? I see he already had them up on his screen when the video started. Would you know?
Thanks for the great instructional video, I have design spark and have been trying to use it. I've subscribed to the channel and will be using your videos to help me with the software. 👍😉
Hey Jim, have you noticed that the currently selected move context button is always larger than the rest? Using DSM I had not noticed, but watching your video it became apparent.
Jim, Thanks your video was very helpful. It helped me to assemble some components for a manifold assembly project; where I had to import components I did not draw. They were not aligned with the planes on different axis. I've been looking for some side freelance work with AutoCad or DesignSpark. Any ideas anyone where I should look?
Your videos are very informative … can you refer: 1 that shows how to make (construction) Lines as 'placement' for eventual objects? / simply Free Body Dia.? Thanks!
I was looking for a video that teaches me how to make an assembly of parts and put them together like your video. The only thing is I don't understand how to bring both parts together in order to mate them? Little help if you would, thanks.
Hi Jim, I wonder if you could help me design a funnel from square to circular transition. I have been trying and there is no way I can pull the surfaces that join these two geometric areas to a solid!
There is now a Blend tool in DSM v4.0 (R19.1) which will allow you to do this. It is located to the far right of the Edit panel of the Design bar. Have a look at this demo th-cam.com/video/xCvCxrY3y2w/w-d-xo.html it may give you the necessary insight to achieve what you are trying to do.
You can also center it in easier in move mode with a right click on a full surface object and press up to and press on the axis on the other object...rotation will not change sadly 😅
Great Job Jim your a very patient man!.....Now go to Autodesk and download fusion 360 request an enthusiast license (free to use if you make less than $100K/ year) and accomplish the same task in four steps. I guarantee you you will love this program.
Fusion 360's direct modelling tools are not as sophisticated as DesignSpark Mechanical in many cases. I use both programs. For instance, you can manipulate edges of solids in DSM in ways that it is impossible to do in Fusion 360. For instance, Fusion 360 has no equivalent of DSM's pivot edge tool. (no, it's NOT the same as draft). There is also no copy edge tool. You have to become familiar with these tools to appreciate them. They are extremely fast to use and incredibly powerful.
When I have completed certain other projects, it is my intention to investigate DSM and DSPCB a lot more. I think that I am now beginneing to see the nicer points of this suite of programmes.
As a new user to DS M, I am starting with the exercise in the R-column; [simple cube, with handle]. After many tries, I cannot 'round ALL the edges' AT ONCE. Can you help? Thanks!
Did you know that it is possible to change the speed of a YT video without affecting the voice pitch. Click on the Settings button and chose the speed you want.
It doesn't matter what features are referenced as we're not establishing parametric relationships. It might well be a rough casting - probably gravity die casting, but the cad accuracy will be perfect unlike the actual manufactured part. Levelling and positioning to the main bore is quick but the alignment between one of the 4 fastener securing features requires a bit more work which is unnecessary. Whatever is available and convenient to use, exploit it.
You have got a calming voice, lovely accent and a way with words! I could listen to you for hours, though I still prefer it when I don't have to can figure DSM out on my own :) All the best
Thanks Jim! This is like the third time I've had to come watch your video! I only use DSM infrequently and I forget how this all works. 😀
Great video! I ran into a problem aligning a box bottom and top, and this video helped solve my alignment issue(s). Thanks again great job!
Jim - thanks for sharing. I hadn’t managed to figure alignment out until I came across your video.
Appreciate the video, very clear, no wasted confusing steps, and got me back to designing an assembly. Thank you.
Your comment makes my heart sing.
One of the best ones I have run across. I couldn't stand when pieces get out of alignment. This is great! Thank you Jim.

Sent appreciation via paypal today. You made seemingly difficult tasks so much easier to accomplish. Thank you again.
You are very welcome and thanks for the donation.

Thanks very much Sir. How to align things was the biggest difficulty that hindered my learning
this video has saved me a couple of times. I probably thanked you once before but thank you
Your id is not familiar to me so this must be the first time.
Hi Jim. I saw several videos by you. I like them. Please continue, it really makes our work easier.
You could make my life easier by making suggestions on what topics / problems / DSM tools / etc etc to cover.
Thank you for putting this up, it is the second time in several months that it has saved ;-)
Happy to help.
Excellent video, very slow and thorough.
Thanks Blake.

Thank you for this! Just saved me from jumping out a window, because I had the same issue and was struggling. .
Good work, Jim, I would never have found such a trick! Thank you for sharing.
I've been trying to figure thiscoutvfir ages. Thanks.
Fantastic video! Thank you so much for the help Jim this has made a world of difference.
This is the way to do it! Very cool! Thanks!!!
great explanation as always, what would i do trying to lern designspark without your videos :-)

Thanks for the tips Jim, keep 'em coming.
I do intend to do some more when I clear a few other projects.
thanks for this video. I am just learning this software and the alignment was driving me crazy
I know the feeling

Greatly appreciate your help
It could make sense to put all these operations in _one_ command.
Great tutorial. Thank you.

I don't have the align to face button?
That's because there isn't one. I suggest that you watch the video very carefully from beginning to end. The clue is in the video title.
No, Thank YOU very much !
Thanks for the help...
