Hello everyone, in order to mix it up and avoid burnout on my end. I will be releasing mainly HOI4 with some new games mixed in at different points in the week. I will still put out my usual 3 HOI4 vids per week but I will also throw in some extra total war, eu4, stellaris, ck3 games in addition to this. I appreciate you still using teppos! My only thing with the idea of guns bad, firearms had been accepted by all the clans by this time. Now line infantry tactics were relatively new. The Satsuma for instance, were the Shimazu, who first not only got firearms in Japan, but arranged the means of producing them. The Battle of Shiroyama, the infamous battle of the last samurai was not sword versus gun. The Battle just before they used up the majority of their ammunition, and even managed to evacuate with a couple of cannons and shot. They fired till they had nothing to fire, then charged. The last of the samurai were rebelling not against firearms and artillery, but against the social restructuring that would have eradicated their family livelihoods
It’s a cool detail that the military adviser who announces the turning tide of battles and so forth has an American accent, because westerners would be supporting the new and expanding Japanese armies but in ultra-traditional role playing campaigns like this, it is veryyyyy immersion breaking that for some reason these Japanese purists have Americans giving them advice anyway. 😂
Well, there is now a mod for Shogun 2 called Old World Overhaul. It is simply the Shogun 2 vanilla campaign with the vanilla factions spread out across a map of Europe + North Africa + Middle East + India. Its awesome

Obama is definitely my favorite clan. The fact that you can just take over all of the islands within the first fifteen to twenty turns is really nice. Also, you’re constantly fighting against pirate ships that you can simply take over without bothering to build your own. 😂 Bombardments are easily my favorite part about this game.
I am all for having some Shogun 2 for variety. Despite the limited unit types, it's my favourite historical total war (when you don't mod the daylights out of it, then Medieval 2 actually does live up to its promise).

I always feel tempted to play traditional-only campaigns, but then I remember how fun it is to watch Armstrong guns lob canister shot into forts jam-packed with full-stack armies. It's like an angry god throwing red paint onto a canvas. *chef's kiss*
From what I got from the video is that Stakuyi is doing a bit of a Lord Farquaad. Pretty much doing, ‘Many of you will die, but it’s a sacrifice I’m willing to make.’
Looking forward to part 2. I have been wanting to play this game for a long, long while now and I am more inspired to give it a try. Been watching total war videos for a while and your style of videos really suits the series. I picked up a lot of tips to bring into the game, as I am a newbie to the historical total war games. Love all your videos and have been making my way through the history of everything podcasts in my spare time.
A little trick when fighting on multilayered castles, is to never actually fight on the lower levels, just retreat and shoot, as on the inner most level your soldiers will never retreat, they will fight to the death, causing them to be much more efficient in terms of damage per unit
I have a few tips: the spear leavy can form a spear wall formation which makes them ridiculous on the Defense, if you have a multilayered castle you form the levys into spearwalls and make them hug the inner layer of the wall so the enemy can’t climb and fights the spearwall while your guns above shoot them to pieces. I won lots of ridiculous outnumbered battles this way. Also: use spear levys as meatshields when charging to protect your better units. This is one of the last Total wars in which positioning matters, you can defeat line infantry easily with levy gunners for example, if you position them properly.
I remember when we learned in history class how obama was awarded the gold star medal and the title "hero of the soviet union" for his fight against imperial japan
The Boshin War wasn't even the thing that removed the Samurai. Albeit I guess the Pro Imperial forces weren't Samurai. But the Samurai were only truly removed after the Satsuma Rebellion. During the Battle of Shiroyama.
Ah yes, shogun 2, the game that got me into computer gaming on my mothers shitty laptop way back when… so many hrs on this game, you have truly picked the hardest of paths comrade. Best of luck to you when the gatlings roll in

Just FYI, armour in this game has no effect against bullets, it only helps in melee combat against melee weapons. All bullets (and cannon shot types) have the AP designation in the backend and that means they ignore all armour modifiers!
Imagine the amount of money CA could have made IF they had made a Victorian era inspired Total War game to go alongside Victoria 3 and Anno 1800? They can't ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I remember once causing two people to get into an argument over whether the (Boshin War) Emperor was left wing and the Shogun was right wing or if the Shogun was left wing and the Emperor was right wing but that feels more of a fit for the "History of Everything Podcast".
neither really. the emperor was more taking power from the shogun and using the upcoming industry to do that. the shogun wanted to stay in power and as such used the industry to stay. only issue was, almost all of the industrial powers in japan, was in the west... where the majority of the emperor support was at...
I’ve never actually seen this game, I’ve watched countless rome 2 videos(tournaments and 2v2’s) this is pretty neat, very similar, I support the expansion of videos!!!

I love this branching into total war! For the second part of the video things are going to get spicy, you might have to fight every single battle from now. But it makes sense, the gun generally wins, so in order for the traditional units to win you need to lead them with a decent strategy so you can face their guns. And yes, I agree that we have lost quite a lot of features in modern total war games. I prefer medieval 2 to shogun 2 just because of the unit and mod diversity. At the end of the day everyone has the same units here. If you're trying med2 mods, I recommend Divide and Conquer for the Lord of the Rings and Elder Scrolls total war for, you know, elder scrolls, like Skyrim.
The samurai in this conflict actually did use fire arms and guns in real life. Samurai had used firearms since the 1600’s when Portuguese merchants briefly had a presence in Japan.
I think adding in a few games here and there will help avoid burnout, looking forward to what comes out. (I always enjoy total war myself). If possible could you move your portrait over a bit so we can see the enemies army composition though? We do not know what you are fighting against, minus whatever you tell us.
I like the battles in total war but the turn based feature is what is iffy for me thats why I like Grand Tactician Civil War because its basically total war but a continuous flow of time and same with hoi4 and victoria dont get me wrong total war is one of my favorite game series and I look forward to seeing more amazing total war content!
The Aizu were the first shogun loyal faction i played as AND i beat the map with them. So i will say that you're missing out a little bit with not playing as them but they are all fun.

This was the Total War game that got me into the franchise. IIRC it was the last one you could recruit and move units without a "lord."

I recommend the Master of Strategy mod for Shogun 2 and Fall of the Samurai, wich gives a lot more depth to the Campaign and unitvariety

Traditional only is the best way to play this game IMO. I've only ever played this way, I love the challenge it adds
