Thanks! We are from Minnesota, it’s a long wait for our yearly trip, we can’t get enough of fishing the pine island sound.

Yes so pretty, especially at the end of the video when you caught that snook. I love that clear water!! I can’t wait to get back and do it again and again.

Your snook looks like a hadick in New Hampshire but they also look like a small cod

Yeah they all look a little similar to each other.

Looks like some good times! I’ll be finally moving to the island this year and really want to learn the fishing in the area as fast as possible. Are you just using shad on a hook and letting it float/ swim on its own? Bobber? Weights? Braided line? Leader or no leader? So many questions haha

Oh ya so fun, if I could live in FL, I would live on the island too! So it’s not shad we are cast netting, they are mostly pilchards and a few pin fish. Get some chum for them a D&D tackle in Matlacha, and early morning is the easiest to catch them, once the sun comes up the bait fish can see you better making them harder to cast net. We are using medium rods with a 3000 size reels 15- 20lb braid, and 20-30 lbs fluorocarbon leader. Also have a heavier set up, 6000 size reel with a heavy action rod, and I use 30lb braid and 50-60lb fluorocarbon. Mostly not using any weight with the live bait, it depends on depth and if the current is too much, on a size 2/0 j hook or circle hook for the pilchards. We use bobber sometimes as well. When we were fishing out in the passes we did use steel leaders sometimes as there is a lot of toothy fish. Our first year we did hire a guide and asked a lot of questions which helped us out a lot.

@@Iferenz oh man that is a HUGE help!! Copying all that down in my book for when I get back down there. I was glad to see a few of the local bait shops still up and running since the hurricane. Do you/ did you do most of your fishing in the sound or did you ever adventure out in the deeper waters? I’d like to go out past captiva and dabble a little into the fishing out there one day as well.

We did most of our fishing in the sound, we did go out in the passes some on calm days and stayed in cell phone range where we caught cobia, Spanish mackerel, and a few sharks in this video. This year we got a personal location device, a Garmin inreach, and a radio, if we have a calm day or two we will go off shore and try and fish some wrecks. In a few weeks we will be back there for a about 10 days, can’t wait!

This really does look an amazing trip!
Is there a way to contact you for some pointers?
My dad, nefew, brother and I will be there in few days for 5 day fishing trip.

Thanks! It’s so fun we try and go every year. I can try and answer any questions you might have. You should do what we did, we hired a guide, we asked a million questions, he did his best to help us. Otherwise the biggest thing was catching bait, learning how to do that really helped us catch more fish. We also joined the Facebook “pine island” page and ask questions there too.

      @@Iferenz thank You!!
We will need to figure out how to catch bait I guess.
      Thanks again!
