- In this video I head out to target some mackerel on lures for the first time this year. After hooking a mackerel while bass fishing the night before, I thought it was worth a try at a spot where you can sometimes have some great mackerel fishing. I'd be using metal lures from Majorcraft and Sidewinder, these little metal jigs are brilliant for mackerel and can be worked in a variety of ways. This session was a lot of fun as mackerel will fight well for their size and provide a great bit of spot on light gear.

I worried about keeping mackerel, however I watched a BBC program where a commercial ship vacuumed like 7000 tonnes of mackerel in one take to sell to Japan. Totally wrong.
The super trawlers are a joke! So are any trawlers for that matter. The answer to protecting any species of fish slaps you in the face but unfortunately, nothing will be done until it’s too late. It’s a sad situation.
Well said call mackerel depletions have being considerably noticeable from shore fishing for at least a decade

You've sounded the dinner bell for any local anglers who know you. Beautiful sized mackerel and yes, they should be better regulated. It's the same here in Dublin with throngs of people lifting them out when they're around. I can do without, or a limited bag, as long as the mackerel biomass recovers.
It’s a popular spot that place. Throughout the summer they’ll be people there everyday. There’s no need to load up on them. A few per person is more then enough isn’t it.

Yep seen it in Dalkey a few lads had 2 mack rigs tied together buckets & bags full no need for it
@@lees2559 Yeah, at Sorrento Point? It's the same at Balscadden and they're justifiably starting to get some heavy criticism for it. Next to Dalkey, at Killiney, can be excellent for decent bass during a night time spring tide.

Had a cracking session there once about 15 bass nothing over 2lb and 78 mackerel. I usually go on high tide. Put my gear and clothes in a dry rucksack and swim across the gully

Our local lobster stocks are crashing because their grounds have been overrun with spider crabs migrating north with the warmer seas, our local lobster can’t compete with them.
There’s a big push locally to try to persuade locals to start adding more spider crabs into their seafood diets, to help sustain the fishing industry.
Problem is, most people prefer lobster and are willing to pay for it, spider crabs are worth much less at market.
The local oyster industry is under threat as a result also.
The seas are definitely warning.
…Oh yeah, I forgot to mention but it was just bought up in the video, we also have tuna here now.
mackerel been caught here in Dublin since the second week in april a few lads caught dozens of them i have to get out meself this week

Been catch8 g mackeral from Torbay for 60 years. They have dwindled massively in last 10 years, with mainly joeys these past seasons. The number anglers taking and killing many joeys, is disturbing. The growth in seal population has also hammered the spring shore pollack runs. Even the ballan wrasse, a winter banker, have been decimated. Long gone are the berry head, spark plus, rotten bottom, hardback crab, and plenty 3-4-5 lb fish days. Nice video. Large mackeral are mor rare than bass thee days from the shore. Thanks
That’s not good to hear. Unfortunately it's like that around many parts of the Uk. Let's hope for a more positive season all round.

As in, mass commercial fishing mate. Any shore angler taking 5 mackerel won’t even put a dent in the stocks. 1 seal or tuna alone would devour plenty more then that on a daily basis.

Hi. I was using a Shimano Aernos 7-35g rod. I use 20lb braid on the reel too.
I agree that take limits are needed. Not for pleasure fishers - But for the commercial boats that rape our water's.
You need to clean your line roller on the reel before it stops rolling and damage your line i think that's what is making the noise while reeling
Yeah it got a soaking a few weeks back. I oiled the line roller last week and went out and used it. It was fine but I went bassing in the surf again and didn’t rinse the reel after. It could do will a service really.
Great session and wise words about conserving stocks yet you keep 6 fish?!!! Not sure if you're practicing what you preach, surely 2 fish would be enough for a good meal and put the rest back?🤔

New to shore fishing, but isn't there a size limit for landing mackerel? I've caught 2 the other day and they both were shy of around 1cm from the limit, which I read it was 30cm. Is this right? I haven't seen you measure any of your mackerel at any point and it makes me wonder if that is the law or not.
Yes mate you’re right. Uk minimum size is 30cm. Over here it’s 20cm that’s why you didn’t see me measure any of them.

There are hardly any mackerel on the south Devon coasts these days their numbers have dropped and dropped. A fish once common is becoming rare.

Environment this environment that yet they are quietly allowing big industry to destroy our seas and fish stocks for huge short term profits. And the politicians turn a blind eye. Grrrrrrr
You want the government to put measures in place? I'll tell you something, its not the guys with a spinning rod on the cliffs thats reducing numbers but the amount of commercial fishing. If defra was really serious about keeping stocks sustainable they would target commercial fisheries and not the individual angler
