    When PLD got Shield Mastery and Auto-Refresh in... the ToAU era(?), I had fun messing around soloing as RDM/PLD. Really defensive and long-lasting, and it was one of the jobs that granted access to Vorpal Blade before RDM main got access to it.

    I was a Hume Paladin main.
    I'd written a comment, so 'passionate' that it was taking up my entire screen and I had to hit cancel for the sake of sanity.
    The Brady Game Guide nails the introduction perfectly.
    My favorite (75-era) was PLD/RDM.. OH my GOD! The stuff I could do with this job-combo...

    I had this guide when it came out, and I was out of town with it for about 2 weeks before I ever even booted up the game. The thing I remember most about this guide is the pictures they use for the Jobs. It sold me on Paladin before I ever started because it had that picture of that great armor (iron musketeers maybe?). It cracks me up looking back on it because its clear they just threw whatever on. I'm pretty sure the Beastmaster has no armor on, and the Ninja has the Leather Armor set on their specific pages and I remember thinking "ew I'm not playing those". Those pictures were a big part of why I choose what Jobs I leveled. If they had used the AF armors for each Jobs page I may have played FFXI entirely different!

    I had a blast as a pld main, pld/war was great, pld/nin for solo pre treasures, then pld/blu and pld/dnc for fun times, pld/dnc with mercurial sword omg....joyeuse as well, loved camping my joytoy! Pld/blu was great with bludgeon, metallic shell etc. Shields were pretty useless early 75 cap, they did an update ages into the game that made shield skill itself level so much faster, in the begining you could tell when a pld didn't play much because his shield skill level would be abysmal.

      I remember it being a nightmare to level mine to 75 in 2005. Back then Ninja could eat an entire-aga spell with only one shadow image, so I could never get a WHM to party with me. I literally hit 75 in a static party with a RDM and a SMN. The second I hit 75 (and started leveling my WAR up to 75 for meriting in Lufaise / Aht Urghan in 2006, then my THF to 75 because it was a support job and I refused to level RDM or WHM to fill that role) everyone wanted me to come tank their HNMs and sky shells. I absolutely LOVED it once I had merits and the Aegis / Hauteclaire. By that time, due to the Sheild block changes, my Divine, Healing, Enhancing, Parry, Blocking, and Dodge skills were maxed and I literally could solo tank most everything after taking a Trick attack in my Ares' Cuirass. It was totally hysterical to solo tank Fafnir or Hydra by Blocking / Parrying / Dodging something like 90% of all incoming damage.

    • @scmsean
      @scmsean 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ryanedwards7487 I'm pretty sure Ninja had been nerfed by 2005. I started playing this game in 2003 a few months after US release. I leveled PLD to 70 pretty fast and after that it was a pain to get from 70-75. I nearly quit the game at 73. At high levels things just hit so hard.
      After I hit 75 I leveled my ninja up. At lower levels ninja suck, but by the time you get to be 50+ everyone wanted a ninja. Ninja was also so much better for solo and farming.

    • @ryanedwards7487
      @ryanedwards7487 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@scmsean Nah that was some time in 2006, because it was still something they had after I graduated from college. By that time I was already level 75 on Paladin, because I would build my own parties with a RDM and SMN I knew and we didn't mind leveling with Japanese and Eastern European people late into the night. I co-leveled WAR and PLD to 70 for Maat (which ironically was so much easier on my PLD than my Warrior because I used a fully leveled Mace to use the Mana Regen Weapon skill during his Hundred Fist + Invin moment, taking it to the face so I could get the TP gain). However, once they reigned in Ninja and changed the Shield block mechanic (making it so you still took damage, but less and shield blocking was actually levelable), Paladin became a powerhouse. I would even go PLD/NIN for quite a few HNMs because a THF could help you keep aggro while shadows, fully capped parry / shield / evadion, and fully capped magic skills meant that you didn't need to have someone curebombing you like so many LSes used to do (on my server at least) back at the start of RoZ.

    • @scmsean

      @@ryanedwards7487 I just did a google search. I see in mid 2005 people talking about a ranger and ninja nerf in the next update, so this probably a couple months after. I remember the ranger nerf. I was in a set party with 2 rangers, and both quit ranger after that.

    Regarding paladin's slow TP gain:
    Way back in the day (just around the time that Treasures of Aht Urghan came out) I had a party where I was responsible for weaponskilling as a Paladin.
    This was in Garliage citadel basement in early to mid level 50s killing beetles.
    The thief would pull and I would voke off. Once I had TP, the BLM would start casting ancient magic, which back then without fast cast took a long time to finish.
    I would open a skillchain and the thief would then close it. The ancient magic would then go off, magic bursting and killing the beetle.
    It was one of the fastest, most efficient garliage basement parties I ever had and I still remember it 16 years later.
    All that to say, yes, paladins could participate in skillchains, although once colibris became the thing to EXP on, nobody even bothered with skillchains anymore.
    And yes, I almost always made my own parties on paladin. ALl I would need to do is find a healer and then I was set. DDs were everywhere and I had my pick of the litter.
    Generally speaking I tried to make my parties on all jobs though. I was able to level my DD jobs fairly quickly just by actively paying attention for when tanks and healers flagged up.

    Agility effects your shield block rate. So AGI was actually quite good for PLD if you are min/maxing. It honestly does a lot more than VIT once you hit the VIT soft cap which is pathetically easy to do.

Sure, I did so for some solo fun at times but the only 2H weapons I ever used in a party were spears for Colibri parties and the Earth Staff for kiting. Any PLD not using a sword and shield otherwise should get a kick. Shout out to any members of Rapture back before Rahamut btw.

    I made my own parties from time to time. PLD was (is) my main in FFXI and I absolutely loved it. Most of the time though I'd get invites pretty quickly. Tanking is never as popular as the DPS job. I also soloed as a PLD whm quite a bit. Auto refresh, from PLD and auto regen from whm made it so you would last quite a long while. Being able to do the first three teleports was also great to get around. Sneak and Invis as always very useful to avoid things, and with a proper amount of mind they didn't disappear after a few seconds.

    To get from level 37-75 as a PLD I pretty much had to create my own parties. In 2005, Ninja could straight up avoid all damage (the bad old days, when AoE enemy spells and abilities did not wipe out all shadows, just one). I literally hit level 75 in 2005 by making a static party with a RDM and SMN, because none of the leveling WHMs on Phoenix Server (except very late when I could get Japanese parties) would play with a PLD tank. I will say, having to take "subpar" DDs, like SAM (back when no one thought they were as good as a DRK XD) or DRG, by the time I hit 75 and had EVERYONE wanting me in their Dynamis or Limbus Linkshells, or helping them farm (sky) or (sea), bringing my buddies along was a prerequisite. You want me? You bring my friends. It was funny to hear people talk about us (we all had also farmed up the moongate key in Ro'Maeve just to let us level) and how good our DRG, THF and SAM was, and how good my RDM was from HAVING to keep a Refresh rotation back then, as well as having to back up heal and nuke....Jukor was just...the best RDM you could have in your team. And he was ALWAYS in mine.

  • @pdraggy
    @pdraggy 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    That's the main reason I'd sub THF as RDM, because it gave me a nice little agility boost to further protect me, the last line of defense, from AOEs.

Galka was a bit challenging, but using constant cure I’s at all times to hold Aggro, instead of waiting to cast a massive heal, usually worked out well. Having a good RDM in the group was always nice. Provoke, Flash, Shield Bash, Sentinel, cure I’s in between each, even if you didn’t need them. Using Cover worked excellent as a Hume.

  • @Mirvana
    @Mirvana 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    IIRC PLDs wanting some AGI was because I think it increased your parry or block rate, not lowered enemy crit.
    The "level discrepancies" thing in the "I can fight undead!'-section was a mechanic that got toned down after a few years that was intended to make fighting higher-level enemies even harder. When fighting anything above Even Match, you would be penalized in the combat calculations based on how much higher level the enemy was (ex you'd do less damage or dodge less often than the raw stat-comparisons would indicate).

    Had a Tarutaru PLD/NIN play as DPS/backup Healer (linkshell group with nin tank) in late 60s in bibiki on dhalmel to amazing effect. Ended up main healing while doing melee DPS since the random smn/whm afk'd. Tarutaru mp, sword merits, dual wielding self-signed Espadon+1s, and general DPS gear leftover from my war75 helped.
    PLD/WHM could be backline pure healer once they got erase and AoE cures in ToAU areas near level cap. But thats more a 'no whm' is available (or 'whm leaves and only tanks are seeking') so I GUESS we'll settle situation.
    PLD/RDM was nigh-invincible against many easy prey with Phalanx up for solo messing around. Did it for giggles in Onzozo a few times.
    RDM/PLD I GUESS could be nice for Flash spam and eventually 1mp/tick auto refresh? But you gave up so much for it (Stun, conserve MP, erase, shadows/dualwield, etc), not to mention the massive MP hit if you weren't Taru.
    PLD/DRG ultra-specific for small DPS boost at select (lower) level ranges if you KNOW you won't be needing voke. Technically, same deal for PLD/RNG at 20s. SAM is better user of both niche subs though.
    PLD/SAM (post-Hasso, mainly) In theory only, never got to try. Had the setup for it, but never got staff skill itself high enough to utilize it back when I still had a Primate Staff+1. Could see it being useful for KRT or random DPS-y slots.
    Could see multiple staff-wielding pld/sam and pld/whm having a fun time at KRT if ToAU was full or not released though on the unlikely chance people had the gearset and skill levels to do it.

    If I could have done one thing diffrent trying to hit the 60 cap back in the day, I would bave sported a Haubergeon as soon as i could have and then a Bastard sword +1 @60 fuck the gluttony sword, also would have looked in depth of how the hate table actually worked.

    When I would go farm as a paladin back in 2004, I would sub thief or if it were for more dangerous areas, whm.

    In retail i did war/pld because of this book. The def trait doesnt stack so it was dumb.
    Pld/ninis your solo go to not pld/whm

      PLD/WHM was good, so you could teleport. I did PLD/BLM a lot as well for escape. By solo I assume you mean for farming. If I was soloing quests I would do ninja/war. Ninja was far better for solo.

    Looking to return to FFXI... Curious ... Is retail worth it? Or should I seek out a private server with a better era of the game? I played until about 2007, got it when it first released in USA

      I can't speak to retail, but I recently took a dive into a private server and I don't regret it. WingsXI is taking off as a server right now, and it makes a big difference when the community is newer and and actively growing vs joining a server where there is no bridge between starting and end game

      It really depends what you're looking for, if you want the same feel as 2002-2007 private would be a better way to go and there's lots of choice out there.
      if you want a faster paced experience with more content and a soloable experience for the most part retail is the way to go.
      I have tried both, but after spending not 2 minutes in the dunes on retail already ready to leave because the exp gain is insane now I found it wasn't for me and stuck to private.

    I mained PLD at 75 cap. Only job i took to 75 actually. And making your own party...? Lol you barely hsd time to put up your party flag let alone make a party... exp party invites were rampant lol. With your party flag up or not.

    I used Bst/pld from 1-10 but that's about it. Pld/whm was useful when looking for coffers and at 75, having the 3 basic crag ports was handy, but as an undead killer? Not really. The Guide was fully of goofy stuff like that.
