Little White Salmon River @ 5.6+

  • This video gives you a look into the record high decent of the Little White Salmon. This push in level came after a steady week of running the river at flood stage and many years of training, learning, and making up these high water lines. A bit of luck always comes with catching rivers at particular flows...And it just so happened that myself, Isaac Levinson, and Ben Marr decided to drop into the LW on the morning of January 28th 2020 and explore the limits of our favorite river in the world. What we found was a mix of glorious, beautiful, and freighting. Even after close to 1000 runs of this section, I was personally pushed to my limits. Simi-controlled chaos...
    I don't recommend running this river over 5 feet to anyone, but you have to go to know, and that's a personal decision. Grateful to say the least.

    I’m 58 now. Stumbled across this video. Right now I feel very sad and desperately want a time machine to go back and go around again. This is the best video on you tube, for me. Great tunes, breathtaking . Thank you ever so much. Be safe, peace, form the U.K.

      At 57 I discovered kayaking at the urging of my kids. I paddle an inflatable kayak and although I cannot run the water shown here, I run some great whitewater and it is a thrill. And I have met some interesting people. I paddle about once a week! I say get out there and give it a try.

      If it makes you feel any better even if you started when you were young you’d probably still never catch the little white at 5.6ft

    That was badass ! Don’t have that kind of water here, so I canoe on the lower MO River about 150 miles south of the Gavins Point Dam. I’ve been been canoeing with the pancake ice that comes down this way every winter for about the last thirty years. I’ve floated by coyotes,foxes, bobcats and eagles. It’s been a hell of a good run. Weather and age has not let me out yet this winter, that and all the flooding up this way has changed my entry points and take outs. Wish I could have run some of those types of rivers when I was younger. Thanks for the video !!!! 👍👍👍👍👍

    Is this the White Salmon in WA across from Hood River? If it is, many trips up there to Mt Adams country. Now near the Payette, Salmon, Snake, Owyhee and Bruneau-Jarbridge in Idaho. Definitely want to get up and check out the Lochsa and Selway someday in that massive Selway-Bitterroot.

    That was solid. After reading the intro, I understand better. Your lines were effing genius. The 1,000 runs makes perfect sense. I was astounded at the near (laughing) perfect choice of line. I couldn't do that. I don't run the same rig. My canoe would almost certainly be looking for its fourth set of gunwales. (on its third set of gunwales in 4 years) My canoe would be too long and too slow in the turn. Watching was more like watching a mogul run on a big mountain, with big random bumps,, double black diamond Vermont trail stuff. Sugarbush, Middle Earth. Well Done !!! Thank you for bringing me along.

    Awesome! We rafted that river about 10 years ago and it was near 6.0. The guide had never seen it that high in the 30 years of guiding the river. It was so high, it was unsafe to drop the falls!

    • @bfosterkayaking
      @bfosterkayaking 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      You must be thinking of the commercial raft run on the Middle White Salmon. The Little White Salmon (shown here) is a much steeper and more difficult run a few drainages to the west of the White Salmon.

      Couldn't agree more with you. I come from a surfing background and while I enjoy watching kayaking videos, the music selection in nearly all kayaking videos is nothing short of abysmal. Cheaply produced electronic or dime a dozen bad boy hip hop that has nothing to do with the imagery. Just leave the natural sound.

    Another watch 4 years later, and I have to say, that upstream ferry by Levinson was hairy. It capitulates the essence of extreme kayaking and quick thinking. No doubt he knew exactly where that log was from warm up runs, but quickly id'd that far left was his only safe option. Power ferry move like no other.

    A little after 4 minutes you'll see me swimming up stream in these beginner caps. On a serious note this is insane. I wish I did motor this when I was younger. Only experience I have is finding a white water kayak here in N.Y on April 2nd against a log jam and deciding to take it down the crick. Thank god it had a leak and the off balance water threw me out several times. The trout fisherman didn't know what the hell was coming out in front of them. The snow on th banks let me know I was the coldest I've ever been.
