  • From May 2019 to May 2020, I filmed one second of video for every day of my life. This is what I learned during that process.

Man. The resonance of this caught me by surprise. I think I’ve grieved, or moved through to acceptance and then something like this reminds me, as you say, of what we’ve all lost. For all the banality of everyday life, there is something deeply powerful about seeing the small details of what you have lost, and how that echoes my own loss. All of our loss. What a time to be alive, if not couch locked and apartment bound. Thanks for putting in the time to bring this together. It definitely meant a lot. And I personally can’t wait till you are able to go back out there and be solely responsible for keeping your local restaurant industry afloat (this is long time listener Kess BD, by the way). Thanks, man. K

I was trying to make some space in my phone deleting photos, and it really hit me. Things and moments that you take for granted and not knowing if they’ll ever come back.
It’s nice to see that there’s still some happiness in your post-pandemic videos. Thank you very much for this: It reminded of the good times and the good times that we can still have if we all take care of each other. (but I miss going to the theater SOOO much!!)

Adding your thoughts really increased my engagement and understanding of this year in your life, Dave. Great job!

I’ve been following you through this platform and the Slashfilm cast for years and years and as always, I’m struck by how thoughtful the content you make is. The treasure of being with friends and family and all these other experiences is worth staying home and keeping everyone healthy to persevere. Thank you for adding these lessons to your yearly video.

I loved it David, I was inspired to start 3 years ago after watching Jeff's one, I always try to compile them at the end of the year as I enjoy reflecting at the start of the new year, but it had never occurred to me to put it all together around my birthday as a little treat to myself... I think I'll be changing how I do it this year!

Hi David. Wow, what a great idea for a video. I so appreciated your thoughts, reflections and learnings from making these videos. 2020 has been such a challenge for everyone. Through it all, I have hope and try to stay positive with kindness and compassion for everyone. I am an introvert and have stayed at home with my wife for the most part since March and so that I can do my part to protect others. Your narration for this video was brilliant.

Thank you for this Video Dave. I found myself crying like a little girl by the end of it. I'm just so alone and isolated right now, and I know it won't be forever. We just have to be patient and things will get back to normal. It maybe a different normal, but it will get back there eventually. As long as those I love can stay safe until this pandemic passes, that is the most important thing. My Birthday at the beginning of December and i plan on starting my 1 second everyday diary on that day thanks to your inspiration. Hope all the best for you and keep up the great work!

Agreed. Beautiful work, with the recent onset of hope, I can feel comfortable to unfist my hand and be reflective on this past year. It is the season to reflect, identify, appreciate and prepare of the next year and the true start (restart?) of this decade.
A lot of trauma occurred (occuring?), I need to remember that beauty does indeed come from anywhere/everywhere.
    Thank you for the nudge.

I've made one second videos ever since you first posted that ted talk I wanted to thank you for all the joy its brought me. I even went back and did it for every day I have video footage from my life which is a fun experiment down memory lane ... I hope next years video will be the glorious sequel to this where it starts out depressing but hope comes and by your birthday you can be celebrating it at a restaurant.

I certainly echo your sentiments that as hard as these times of quarantine may be, that they are worth enduring to regain that previous life. Seeing this insight into your life rod pre COVID times really put that into contrast. Thanks for doing this 😊

Your 2019 trip to Iceland looked amazing. I recognised quite a few of the spots you went to from that Netflix documentary with Zac Efron

I thought last years was amazing , but the narration and then the dates ticking down to COVID made this years like a real movie.

I just found this TH-cam channel and am binging from most to least recent. I didn't know about David Chen until I found this channel, so imagine my surprise when I saw one of my favorite character actors, Stephen Tobolowsky in this video and then feeling dumb because apparently they do a podcast together.
