Baggio is probably the most underrated player ever. A talent equally to that of Messi, Maradona, Pele' ,Cruyff. Italy was the best team in 1990 and 1994 and if it had won the world cup, Baggio would be recognised as good as Maradona if not better. Baggio was 20 years ahead of his time and his talent was never really appreciated in Italy until he stopped playing. He is the best italian football player of all time, a humble man and a great human being. Nothing like the marketing machines that are Beckham or Cristiano Ronaldo. I'm English and so is my dad but with him being into Maradona i heard more about Italian football than English! The 1st world cup i ever watched was 1990 i was 10 and thats how i 1st heard of Baggio and that goal he did against Czech. I remember him and Schillaci being a good pair together for Italy in that world cup. I'd have been happy for england, argentina or italy to win in 1990. I remember the penalty in the 1994 final it was so gutting for him. I actually closed my eyes when he took it I couldn't watch! I'd have gone crazy had it gone in! I used to watch the Italian football programme on a sat morning in the UK just for him! My dad is now a big Messi fan. Such a shame he had the injuries he had he was such a good player and too good player to be overshadowed by that 1 penalty miss. He does get less recognition but those in the know about football know he was 1 of the best

It's because he was born in the wrong era. Serie A at the time was full of fierce defenders, and tackling someone from behind wasnt a red card offence back then. Also Serie A teams back then usually played 4-4-2. Imagine if Baggio is playing today.
Michael Laudrup was better and in my opinion the best player pep ever played with, just because he was a central midfielder, he gets neglected. This has always been the case , attacking forwards have always been preferred over midfield orchestrators or defenders.

It's actually interesting his talk with Puyol, who's a veteran, and probably not as shy as Iniesta or Messi in talking with him and speaking very frankly. Baggio really is an authority in the sport, but Puyol honestly was one as well, a great captain for a great team.

Baggio was an idol to me when I was a kid. He seemed so determined when he carried the ball so freaking confident. He would dance with the ball, and do amazing things.So mesmerizing. I cheered for Italy in WC90. That was the first time I learned how it feels when your team loses , that agony....
The pain has never gone away. The Italian side in 1990 was fantastic; a fine blend of flair, attacking football and an outstanding defence. I will never get my head round why Baggio was dropped for the semi-final against Argentina. It robbed Italy of its greatest attacking talent and completely destroyed the rhythm of the team. As great as Baggio was in 1994, he was in much better physical condition in 1990 and 1998. (In 1994 he went into the competition carrying an achilles injury).

Growing up in Wales I remember watcing Italia 90 and to this day I just don't know how Italy didn't win that world cup.The team was full of quality.

@@funkymonk5344 my father has always tell me about that semifinal. Played in our country and loss with a header of caniggia (argentinian with italian origins) in the last seconds
@@davide6163 oh yes! I watched all the games in Rome. I was 14 years old. Then the semifinal was played in Naples and we lost at the penalty shoots. 😭 it was the best Italian national team I ever saw. We were very unlucky.

1- The Italy coach, for some crazy reason, dropped Baggio from the starting 11. This completely destroyed the rhythm of the team, which despite the tight scorelines, had played some of the best football any Italian side has ever played. They were a joy to watch from the first game against Austria up to the game against Ireland.
2- The game was played in Naples, where a large contingent of fans had mixed loyalties - either supporting their country or their idol Maradona. The atmosphere and backing just wasn't the same as it had been in Rome.
3- Argentina had been terrible in that World Cup. They were awful to watch (Maradona's moments of brilliance aside) and scraped their way to the semi-final. Against Italy, they put in, by far, their best performance of the tournament, showing more attacking intent and really seized on the anxieties of the Italian team and many of the fans.
