I loved Jessie on the Mike, but I put Gorilla Monsoon and Bobby The Brain Heenan together as a team on the same label as Jessie and Gorilla, maybe slightly better even.
It cannot be underestimated how much the guys on the mic in that era contributed to the success of the Hulkamania era. Without them wrestling can get very monotonous and they were a big reason of why I tuned in every week
I didn't dislike Jessie as an in ring talent. But I think the broadcast booth was where he really shined. He did a very good job as a heel announcer still putting face's over while taking shots at them. There's a special art to being a heel announcer and not all heel announcers have been good ones. I think Jessie may be one of the greatest heel announcers ever. Right up there with pre WWE Roddy Piper, and Bobby Heenan.

They stopped it because Jesse was just terrible in the ring in singles matches. Anyone who saw Hogan vs. Jesse Ventura in the AWA knows just how bad it would have been. Jesse was much, much better as a broadcaster than doing matches as a wrestler.
What makes a great announceer is his voice . Jesse had that deep tough voice that was perfect for announcing in wrestling . You don't see that any more . Now you got guys with sissy voices like Michael Cole who are just terrible and you just change the channel because you cant stand there voice .
@Karl M Cole was never good. Which is why the rock always bullied him, booker T and many others vomited on him, and Vince always gave him the crappy jobs. He earned respect for staying after all that abuse, but unfortunately getting respect doesn't make you good at what you do.
My favorite was when he came back to referee for Summerslam 99 or 2000, and he was the governor of Minnesota. And after he makes a political speech in the ring, they have him sit in on commentary and he puts the headphones on and IMMEDIATELY goes heel. Just out of instinct. It was amazing.
Jesse Ventura and Vince McMahon were my favorite announcers of all time. Those two worked together so well as a team. It was also fantastic when a third announcer such as Bobby Heenan would sometimes join in. I remember when we learned Hulk Hogan was the third "Outsider" in WCW. Bobby Heenan was shouting, "SEE! EVERYTHING I TOLD YOU ALL THESE YEARS WAS TRUE!" I was thinking, "No way! Bobby was right!" Having those types of "villain" announcers was always great.
I can’t see Jessie just sitting there with Vince constantly in his ear like they do with the current color commentary team. Cole is a better company man than Jessie.
I used to love listening to Ventura on the mic doing commentary. He was very good. Though it was funny at times you could see him silently mouthing Vince's lines in some of the promos.
He's been on record saying he would if the money was right, but yeah, it's just never gonna be what it once was. There's an old saying "You can't recreate greatness". Vince wanted to be the last man standing and he got his wish since there is no competition anymore, but look what it did to the industry? True, one of the old WWE DVD's showed piper commentating as a heel. Vince believes he invented everything that happens in wrestling.....errrr "Sports Entertainment".
I grew up during the 70’s/80’s. I watched my share of WWF. From all of the stories I’ve heard concerning Vince McMahon - it seems to me, he was a pretty reasonable guy. Everyone has their moments, and hey, the guy was running a business. It couldn’t have been easy.
Jesse Ventura was the GOAT heel commentator, and the reason is that he put the focus on the action in the ring. Too many heel announcers are too busy cutting promos to bother with the action, or else just openly rooting for the heels instead of breaking down what they're doing. Ventura would talk about why the heel's strategy was effective and give grudging credit to the face when appropriate, whereas Heenan (for example) would just openly lie about what was happening and spend 2/3 of the match just insulting the face and cheering on the heel. Ventura treated it like a sport where it was his job to analyze the action, and would spin it from a heel perspective.
As a kid I always liked Jesse and Vince's little jabs at each other on the mic. When a heel did something dirty Vince would berate him while Jesse would go "I didn't see anything". Those were the days.
To this day Jesse and the Brian and cornette were by far best heel commentators of all time. Jessses work with the Rick Rude Jake Roberts wife thing alone was hall of fame worthy " he likes those ladies with the rings on mcman"
Jess Ventura was away ahead of his time. He was really good on the mic and untouchable. I would love to see him come back as commentary or even as a manager. He was that good. Monsoon was Jesse’s best commentating partner, though I think McMahon and Ventura is a close second, and I feel don’t get enough mention. I think Heenan was best with Monsoon. McMahon and Monsoon, and McMahon and Heenan, respectively, didn’t quite have the chemistry as the others. I think both were each others’ best partners.
McMahon and perfect had a hilarious time commentating a match involving a jobber named Sonny Trout- all the fishing jokes ever got thrown into that match.
