What blows me away is that you can share quality, game changing information with people and they won’t take the time to watch it, much less implement it!
Travis is probably one of the best interviews I’ve ever heard on TH-cam… I am 68 and have “walked up” deer all my life. I too switched to a longbow two seasons ago. While I have some health issues that make me walk less these days, I still prefer to understand the deer movements and flow with them… you see a lot more deer too. I moved away from my core deer hunting areas last year at the request of my daughters, since I’m a widower and live alone. Now I get to learn a new area and frankly, it has turned me upside down even though it’s only 90m from where I used to hunt… always something more to learn, that’s for sure…. I have been rekindled by this interview… thanks everyone.
New Subscriber...best deer video I've ever seen! I hunt like this on public, and it's hard enough with a crossbow lol, this man's impressive . You hosts are doing a great job at listening and not trying to create some god awful Internet persona/brand crap. It's what makes the JRE great. Really enjoyed this vid
He’s 100 percent right about the bucks that you can’t find that main bedding area because the big ones move around bedding areas that’s how they stay alive
I’m in north central Texas. I have been fortunate enough to hunt for whitetail deer now for several years. Not a lot, less than ten maybe. Mostly from a ground blind sometimes a box blind or maybe propped up by a stump on a tank dam. I have an uncle who does not hurt anymore but lets me hunt his property and does some mentoring. Today was a bit windy and I felt it was time that I did some on the ground stalking. I did not find any big game walking in the mid day but I think I ran some coyote around and learned a bit. After breaking for a late lunch I returned to the box blind for the evening watch. The rut is on and I saw several deer. I never pulled the trigger but it was an exciting day with lots of takeaways. Your videos always make me think of something that I could maybe use. Thank you. Keep it southern y’all…
Most guys these days don’t want to hear that the trophy is about the age not the antlers. Very much enjoyed this one. It’s great to listen to these old woodsmen and not the “deer farmers” that are so popular or well known.
Great podcast, about the 1:25 mark when he talks about sitting with that buck and trying to drink up the moment, talks about it being almost spiritual and how powerfully moving it was. That's as real as it gets, this Man is real deal.
It's always the mature men on this podcast that I enjoy watching and listening to the most. They are way more intuitive and informative than any of the younger generations hunters.
I enjoyed this video, when I was younger I would do similar things in reference to stalking and moving a lot. And I was always told by the older hunters to sit tight and not move too much. Hunting is definitely continuing to change learning a lot for the channel y'all keep it up.
These are some of the best interviews with some fantastic woodsman. I’d rather listen to the older generation speak about hunting than the new. Keep it up guys. You’re doing a great job.
Greg from North Georgia, man thank you so much for this interview! Exactly what I needed to hear today! Very good advice on enjoying the hunt and quit focusing on the results! I am about to go on my most difficult hunt of the year in the mountains of North Ga. I am going all out but my attitude is going to much different than it would have been! Thank you!
heck yah the hunt comes first, and a kill is icing on the cake, my advice I learned today on a video is, find a good spot piss on a scrape and come back the next morning and call that deer, it will come right to that scrape. this year middle of October I pruned branches and made so much sound making a shooting lane, the same day the buck who was bedded behind me, circled and come out right to me, checking for what that noise was, and then 9 yards shot with scope zoomed all the way out, ass shot didn't recover 160 class but the best part the young neighbor girl shot it in gun season. good luck shoot a buck
Man that was one of the best episodes yet, and I really enjoy everything you guys put out so that’s saying something. The last 20-30 minutes of the episode is exactly how iv been trying to explain to a few friends who are just getting into hunting but have gotten sucked into watching all the 200” buck media and think that’s the only deer they are supposed to kill. The squirrel hunting aspect is also something iv been preaching for years. Just get out in the woods and become a true woodsmen and Everything else will fall into place in whatever pursuit you are after! Cheers from a Canadian woodsmen 🍻🇨🇦👍🏻
Good stuff fellas. I was hoping to hear a little more about the smoking up process and thought behind it, but maybe another time. Be well and Merry Christmas!!
With a compound bow you’re going to want a big tree or a fat bush in front of you at 5-15 yards to break line of site when you draw your bow. Stadium style “chairs” work great to remove the temptation to lean up against a tree. Leaning against a tree is fine for hiding…. Right up until you need to draw. Bushes, fallen tree tops, makeshift ground blinds made from dead limbs (because it’s illegal to cut live limbs where i hunt).
Man, I live in Florida. If I stopped Everytime I broke a twig by the time I got to where I sit it would be time to go home. It's damn near impossible to walk through our woods without snapping something every step. I totally agree with what he's saying. It's just so hard here. I try to move a couple sticks each time I leave so my ways in progressively get quieter..IDK if I'm helping but I don't think it's hurting.
One thing that we have found that helps with not breaking so many sticks is where a softer soled boot so you can feel what's under your feet before putting your weight down. Also it seems the soft soled boots give you more control walking and sometimes even if you step on a stick it won't crack if you're not moving fast unlike our stiffer soled boots.
@@thesouthernoutdoorsmen I’ve never been a muck boot fan but I’d imagine they might have better feel than my Irish Setters or Red Wings. Might consider trying my felt soled wading boots. 😆
Totally agree with the woodsmanship advice. Dropping squirrels within 80 yards with a .22 rifle validates your marksmanship and makes deer vital zones seem huge. Every squirrel hunt can be a dual effort in deer scouting. (When you get old like me those squirrels are a lot easier to drag out than a deer, lol!)
I just moved back to Appalachia after living in Colorado for 6 years and subsequently I’m going hot and heavy back into Whitetail, the game of my youth. You two gents’ channel is absolutely enthralling, I love your presentation style. You two come across as earnest and true students of the game. You don’t have a look at me or know it all preachy attitude and your willingness to learn from your guests gets amplified tenfold for us listeners! So thank you! Is merch the best most direct way to support you folks? Monetarily?
Here in the deep dark steep mountains of Harlan Ky it’s hard to even find bedding areas for bucks! They bed up high and with the wind. 💨 It’s hard for professionals to kill a mature buck here, wish any of y’all would come try it!
I’m 72 years old and I just started shooting my recurve once again! I’m having a blast! There’s just a thrill about it! I love your podcast! Does your speaker have a book or videos available to buy?
Hey Dusty! We are glad you are enjoying the show! Travis doesn't have any books or videos out but we have published 3 other episodes with him in the past and put out two in the field videos with travis that came out this fall
I think I was lucky. I was old enough to be past that technology phase before it became cool. Have some feeders. They are in pieces in the barn. Have some cameras. They are in a box somewhere. I no longer use hang on stands but ladders are doable. Just bought a new climber, I like those too.
Man the difference in humility between this guy and some others y’all have interviewed. Sometimes it’s obvious when people speak wether or not they know the good Lord. This guy KNOWS HIM.
In listening to these interviews where people hunt off the ground or move through the woods, my question has always been about wearing orange while doing this. Do they wear it, what type of orange do they wear when using ghillie suits, do they take off the orange when they get in their spots and should you when on public land?
Tell you what, I just had a peckerhead tell me his son almost shot me because he said I didn’t have orange on. I always wear an orange hat and orange neck gaitor while gun hunting. So just know there are people out there, especially on public who will shoot whatever moves. I wanted to go off on the guy for not teaching his son properly but it’s not my place. He was pissed at me for shooting a 10 pt that either he or a buck he wanted his kids to get. We both have permission to hunt the same property.
That's a great question and we've never asked Travis about that. Our past guest on episode 600 Todd Steakley also hunts like travis and he mentioned he just wears a blaze vest or hat when required
Not far from my neck of the woods I’m from natchez. I’ve lived in Meadville and bude now live in Brookhaven.Small world I’m also a journeyman lineman lol thanks for taking the time and giving some advice and stories!
great one, but as he said, unless you really have the time and can isolate bedding area. his style is tough. thousands of acres of the Pine thickets in South Mississippi is a different world
Great stuff, I wrote down a lot of quotes, I’m not just using them for hunting, I’m using them to advise my children…..”failures”. Excellent wisdom you only get thru time in God’s creation.

How so? Travis has stated on the show in the past he got tired of running cameras and wanted to get back to a simpler approach to hunting mature bucks. He does give cameras a lot of credit in how he was able to pattern a lot of these big deer he has taken in the past.
@thesouthernoutdoorsmen I enjoy your content and this is an awesome episode. I don’t think I’m exaggerating by saying I’m getting ad breaks every 3-5 min. One of the best episodes on deer hunting I've heard from any source out there. I wonder how much of him being a humble godly man is a factor!
I believe it is the main factor!
Travis reminds me of my grandfather so much. He doesn't waste words, always direct to the point, and very humble.
