The Reveal that Brooke was part of the crew that made the promise to Laboon was one of the most tragic, but also well executed moments in the entire series. Like it’s so tragic, but it also makes so much sense!
Isn’t his name Laboon?
Lagoon?
@@Shady_brautocorrect being a menace
I second that...,Does Oda know how to write a story or what.😁😁😁
"Death is never an apology" is my personal favorite translation of what Brook's final words from that part
Yep I was confused by these subtitles being different from what I remembered. What you wrote was so epic to see!
The fact that the author planned Brook for about 300 episodes ago and he stated that he already planned for the ending despite the story being expanded makes him extremely amazing!
Well a singing skeleton was one of Odas first ideas for the crew. So Brook was always going to end up being a member no doubt
Right now there are SO many callbacks to earlier points in the story! It's getting hard for people to find all of them!
While I'm sure some of the details were changed since the initial concept, Oda had been planning on making a character like Brook since before the manga started. The thing is, there's a lot of things like that, which were in the works from the start that took forever for Oda to get around to. Which is because Oda has stated that One Piece was originally intended to be a five year story, but he's had so many ideas added since then that it's balloned to over a quarter century. One other character is a certain snake themed character coming up in a few arcs, who Oda said was actually supposed to come even later, but he made those plans come togther sooner because of his daughter's age.
If you go looking, there are old sketches from Oda, from before he even started the series proper, that show early concepts for most of the crew.
Have to say, Chopper, Franky and Robin in particular were... very, very different, at that point in time.
And yes, Oda has had the ending planned from the beginning. He's just adding adventures along the way. Like how the seven warlords was a suggestion from one of his editors, long ago, and he couldn't turn down such a cool idea. In hindsight, that alone extended the series by many, many years.
I don't think that Brook was planned to be related to Laboon at first. After all, when the crew first meets Laboon, Crocus tells them that the crew that left him behind abandoned the Grand Line, not that they died.
The slow realisation of who Brook was talking about is peak! WE MISS THE BIG WHALE!!!
So, on a slightly lighter note regarding Brook's tragic backstory, back during the 4Kids run of the series when they were cutting or editing out certain episodes to get through the series faster, one they wound up skimming over was the Straw Hats meeting Laboon, an event that at the time must have seemed like a filler episode that would have no consequence later. So instead of nearly crashing into a whale, they came close to hitting an iceberg. This of course led to numerous jokes like "Brook must really miss that iceberg" or "I knew him since he was a little ice cube!"
If they did reach Thriller Bark, they’d have to say that they met Laboon offscreen I guess
The 4Kids Strawhats never made it to Thriller Bark. They canonically died when an enormous ship fell on them.
@@jibjibs9401 They absolutely would have. I remember being very confused as a kid when Ash from Pokemon suddenly had a whole herd of tauros only to find out later they were introduced in an episode 4Kids decided not to air.
Fun fact: while Brook appeared for the first time in the manga in 2008, his first character designs are dated 2000, when loboon first appeared
There was always s skeleton crew member planned in the original concept for the full strawhats.
40:50 I've been waiting for her reaction to this and it was worth it!
Oda knows how to break ankles like a champ!
The undisputed goat of shaking your feelings
@@KumaGorath To this very day!
35:35 Alicia put the bit of Sanji catching on fire cause of the weadding on the Thumbnail and the title and then skipped it on the TH-cam reaction, Sanji fans can't have shit 😭
The Brooke twist is such a great high point of this arc. Back then it was a story that stood out on it's own, but out of context seemed like just a side story. Here, decades later it all comes together in a great way.
Hey, anyone remember when the 4kids dub skipped the Laboon arc? Crazy times.
Remembering Zoro was missing a sword is such a niche detail compared to everything else going on, and somehow she remembered and called it lmao
Only the big brain rats like us remember
no spoilers dude
@@freakydeaky1435 I'm pretty sure she already ended Triller Bark, man 😂
@@HummingWork ayyyy found ya!
@@matheusprata4618 I think she's going at par (or not too apart) with the YT reactions, seeing that she reacts some recent comments after some reactions.
Brooks relation to laboon is one lf the greatest reveals in whole show. I love it so much
Reading this as it came out in the manga was such a surreal experience. I'd spent _so long_ angry at Brook's crew without even knowing who they were, I just assumed Nami's guess back at Reverse Mountain was correct and they had abandonned Laboon. The second Brook said that name in the manga I went "oh holy shit they didn't abandon him"
Ironically I watch brooks backstory before I started watching One Piece.
There was a video I saw which it said Top 10 One Piece saddest backstory (I don’t remember the rest) I saw a skeleton being there and thought how could a goofy skeleton have the saddest backstory.
So I watched the backstory and regretted my words I cried a lot and still cried while singing along binks sake.
After that it made me really want to watch One Piece because of brook.. I couldn’t .
They didn’t have brook at Netflix and Hulu so it really bummed me out. I watched One piece on Hulu but the motivation to get there was low I still liked it but I wanted to watch brook (I stopped at Syrup Village). It was probably 5 years ago.
Last year at summer was the journey I began watching One Piece and luckily enough there was the arc for brook and I got my motivation to get there.
Basically brook was the reason I wanted to One Piece.
Definitely worth it.
I love how Brook says he’s super light being a skeleton, and yet every time he falls to the ground he leaves a Brook-shaped crater, including his afro.
Imagine living among the corpses of you fallen friends and comrades in a broken boat for 50 long years lost at sea with no way out. All the while thoughts of depression and suicide are running amock with no contact with a single living soul and nothing but singing and playing a tune with a single goal to cheer you up.
I know some of the strawhats have really sad backstories but if we compare, brook takes the cake by a longshot.
The stages of Brook acceptance: 1) A talking skeleton musician who likes to make jokes? How fun, Luffy always wanted a musician! 2) He's had such a hard life, Brook could have so much fun if he joins us. 3) He's part of Laboon's crew, he must join!
A seed planted so long back that it took literally half a decade worth of episodes for it to sprout 😁😁😁
The way Oda can place stuff so ahead of time and pull it back out so long after is one of the greatest strengths of One Piece being such a long-running series 🤩
Ok, personal storytime: At this point I already caught up to the anime and started reading the manga. When Brook said that it was 50 years ago, I could swear I could feel and hear gear turning in my head, cause I put it together literal moments before the reveal. My brain still feels it whenever I see this moment.
The laboon reveal for brook is why i cant understand people saying skip thriller bark like are you even a one piece fan if you skip thriller bark like damn
If just learning Brook is connected to Laboon had Alicia crying then I don't know how she'll be able to handle the end of this arc.
Or the next few arcs after this... oof
Usopp has leveled up his Usopp Spell so much that he can now revive unconscious crewmates with it.
The Brook reveal is _so good._ Laboon's nakama didn't abandon him. They're just...taking a while.
now you can imagine why Brook is my 3rd fave Straw Hat, behind Zoro and Chopper, his Humor, his Style, his Personality, it's impossible not to love that Skeleton.
The "hot swordwoman with meat" joke, is still one of my favorite of the show.
Speaking of this, since you already know that Brooks will join the crew, I want to list some of the runing jokes about them :
Luffy : Love meat and adventure
Zoro : Love swords and get lost everytime
Nami : Love money and beat up the guys when they act like idiot
Ussop : Lie and freak out
Sanji : Skirt chaser
Chopper : Can't handle compliments, can't hide properly and is a gullible
Robin : Love creepy things and make pessimistic comment
Franky : love being called a pervert, can't handle "emotional damage" and that's super
Brook : Skeleton joke and panty fan
Of course, that's not counting the jokes that revolve around two of more member like the constant fight between Sanji and Zoro and Chopper believing everything Usopp say.
Oda must have the patience of a saint if he had the payoff to meeting laboon in his backpocket
Cause it was YEARS of more the 100 episodes/chapters before we meet Brook
Salt Splash!
This is one of Brook’s special moves, where he forces salt into a zombie’s mouth to purify it and return its shadow to its rightful owner.
The reveal of Laboon comes out of absolutely fucking nowhere but fits so god damn much.
The times when you are not expecting it, One Piece hits you with the tears so hard. I cry every time at this bit.
she is not ready for brook’s backstory
This is why I love One Piece! Oda has this amazing ability to plant seeds so far in advance that yield truly beautiful harvests years down the line!
*Usopp* : There's a hot master swordswomen with heat!
Wow, I can't believe he managed to string along all three of them in one sentence
Even better when Usopp ability to tell lies that ended up being trues also manages to put all of this in a future character
40:50 - I was reading the manga back in the day this arc was running. I remember a lot of people speculated that Brook was part of Laboon's crew because you can notice the flag and/or head-piece of Brook's ship matches the ship of the pirates who left Laboon behind.
_"Me, Myself and I , we don't see eye to eye."_
Bringing back Laboon, that alone made Brook a favourite to all; he was planned so far ahead.
Thanks for this.
"Laboon," I was waiting for this. The reaction is as expected. Most excellent.
The laboon episode was like 300 ago, its so wild to see it called back to
Sanji bursts in and lights a sigi. "I Object!" XD
The Nightmare before Christmas is Odas favorite animated movie. He loves making referencing it.
Luffy: Cheese is not enough. Cheese bites. 🧀
Alicia: You're dead to me Luffy
Don’t you just love it when you watch fillers that have important story details and suddenly they come back and hit you in the heart like full circle ⭕️
If you ignore the whole shadow aspect, most of Brook and Ryuma's conversation suddenly turns into a very weird relationship talk...
Sanji:”Stay out my territory.”
When Brook is explaining to Robin and Franky his promise to Laboon, in the dub he says “Death is never an apology!”, instead of “Sorry we died isn’t an excuse”. And honestly the dubbed version hits more for me in that sense.
Also I was waiting for this moment and was not disappointed in her response. Now we just gotta wait for nothing to happen :3
That time you realize that 280 something episodes ago an animals BS actually mattered to the greater plot.
I realized then that if that was the tip of the Brook back story then his was truly the saddest among the crew.
50+ years of anxiety over the fate of your faithful pet at the train station as it were.
Gets me every time.
I fear that Alicia is gonna be a sobbing mess when she gets to Brook's full back story, she is gonna need a stack of tissues and a platter of "meats and cheeses" to recover her strength back...
Imagine that 6 years have passed until the anime has reached this point and how the fans were happy at the time! I cryed. ^^
40:55 "LABOON" XD
when i got to this point i knew i loved one piece but the laboon reveal is where i realized just how good of a writer oda really is because everything loops back around
When franky asks brook about how he said he felt lonely all these years, he says "you're a skeleton now. you'll never make friends. people will reject you. you'll still be lonely."
i didn't see those lines in your reaction but i think that those words are really powerful and sad ;-;
I even said during the laboon episode “ now to wait a few hundred episodes”
Everyone's spoiled on this show, even their own house walls know everything that happens in one piece.
Oda is such a fucking genius, a master of plot twists and foreshadowing. This series feels so rewarsing to follow.
Laboon plot line is amazing and the way the story is handeled is masteful.
WHOOOO MORE ONE PIECE WITH BROOK
For those not in the know, Laboon was completely written out of the 4Kids dub and replaced with an iceberg, cutting out how the met the doctor, how they originally met Vivi and of course cutting out Laboon. That version was such a broken mess of an adaptation, I'm honestly still stunned funimation was able to go back and redub everything as close to the original script as possible.
brook " Death is never an apology" its one of the best phrase of One piece. like "nothing happened", "i want to live", "will you still call me your friend again?" ( no context find out yourself)
one of the best phrases also is ussop "There comes a time when a man must stand and fight. And that is when his friends' dreams are being laughed at!"
The funny thing; Sanji shares the same funimation dub actor as Future Trunks. Sanji went Super Saiyan!
i think oda revealed that those three little zombies were actually based off of oogie boogie's three little helpers
God... I remember how blown away u was at the Laboon reveal. For the readers/og watchers
This was like 5 YEARS apart!
Laboon is that one character which has a really short screentime and yet everyone loves him
If she thought the bye to Merry was sad, Oda was like.... hold my beer. Getting closer to my saddest episode in media, not just anime. 379, if you know, you know. 😭😭🤧
What makes this scene is that oda doesnt shy away from the Franky playing a very pragmatic and honest posistion.
"They'll all dead, youre cant make human connectionsz. Your life sucks." He wasnt being mean, it was the truth. Too often, we want to shield people from hard truths like that.
This was the next big moment that I was waiting for, cause I knew you would be very happy/sad Alicia. It was a dose of medicine we didn’t know we needed, knowing that Brooke fully intended to keep that promise and that Laboon’s crewmates didn’t abandon him.
35:08 "Parker, why does the money come before us?"
“There is a hot swordswoman with meat” remember the sentence.
I agreed with Frankie and Brooke during that exchange. From the outside, it was so long that the one waiting would be gone(reasonably) and how brooke didn't die(since reviving) is a miracle. Then the retort from Brooke hit me HARD as I felt that resolve. A true 'no matter what' promise despite the brutal trials he went through to keep it so far. I'll cry for sure later this arc when I hear it, see it and feel it all over again. One of the SADDEST reads with context for me. I look forward to watching her lose it...
Theoretically, most if not all pirate crews that aren't originally from the Grand Line should know Laboon
Last I was to a buffet was probably last week or the week before, don’t remember exactly. I was visiting my dad in the big city and one day I went to a restaurant that served Asian food to get something for lunch. One of my favorite places.
I was waiting for this reaction lol. I remember screaming Laboon when read the manga, then going crazy in the forums talking about it. Awesome reaction as always Alicia.
Best character come back ever. Brooke is one of my favorite characters. If you would have showed me a picture of him before I met him in the show and told me, I was gonna love him this much, I wouldn't believe you.
So i decided to check how long this foreshadowing actually was . Laboon's introductory chaper came out in August of 1999, while Brook was introduced in January of 2007. Brook was foreshadowed 7 YEARS before he was introduced.
12:33 - 13:08 The song I affiliate Alicia with whenever she gets scared is Hilary Duff's "Hey Now (This Is What Dreams Are Made Of)." She loves Hilary Duff.
Usopp's power is beyond all understanding.
You know, just going to say it, if Sanji could focus on one girl at a time, he'd slay.
you have NO IDEA how long weve been waiting for the Laboon reveal, everyone says when Laboon is revealed something along the lines of "FUCK THOSE GUYS", you werent an exception, and I allways go internally "Uff", while there are many other good payoffs in the series, the Laboon one for me is the biggest to this point, cause it showed me how something so inconsecuential, such a small and seamingly unimportant encounters and detail build up to become massive later on, this is also why OP fans are so obsesive about every little thing, reading each page with a fine comb and reading the WHOLE series again and again, cause, its allways better the next time
you see how the goat writes this art now. laboon!!!
All hail Brook and Laboon may they live happily ever after
Say it with me, "Oda never forgets!"
Your friends never abandoned you, Labooon!!😭😭
God, this is always the best episode for reactions.
5:35 Best song from the movie fr.
Cries over a whale for a second time
I really loved Sanji in this arc XD he's a boss and hilarious!
The second he said his crewmate was Laboon, oh it was over, he was joining the crew, ABSOLUTELY NO WAY WAS BROOK GONNA BE LEFT BEHIND AFTER THIS, GAWDDANGIT ODA YOU CAN'T KEEP GETTING AWAY WITH THIS
Making us bawl tears over characters we haven't seen or thought of after hundreds of episodes T.T
Here in Colorado we have a good place called King Buffett. I went earlier this year.
None of you nerds better have spoiled Brook's Backstory!
More HALLOWEEN MADNESS XD
I'm sure someone already suggested this, and I know you already have a tone of series on your plate - but check out Hunter: The Parenting at some point, it's made by the guy behind Emperor's TTS and it's really good!
My last buffet i was at Legoland Denmark (Im from Norway btw), shit was good af, dont remember when it was though
Anyone else get whiplash from the title because they thought it meant the whole cake ark? LOL, thought I was going crazy for a minute thinking Alicia was somehow already there and I missed it all.
“Maybe it’s an old man”
nami's got some tears to shed right now
LABOON!!!! Man, we haven't mentioned that whale in almost 300 episodes
Damn, I can't even remember the last time I went to a buffet... I think it was a Sizzler. I'm old.
Brook and laboon reunion will be the saddest
Here's the thing
Oda is a master of expanding lore as we go and go further the story. He would take small details from earlier episodes and make them relevant later on, meaning THERE ARE NO FILLER EPISODES on OnePiece, since EVERYTHING can become relevant, even the more irrelevant stuff like a whale in the start chased by the barroques that then proceed to haven an spy from arabasta and then the whale is a crew member in this ark where the friendship with Lola and Nami can become a really big game changer later on like 500 episodes later or something, everything is connected, and this is just the beginning
Timestamp 40:54....And Oda brings it home FULL CIRCLE....Laboon 😭😭😭😭😭😭
His name was... Laboon 💯💯💯💯 peak writing
Love that reveal. Everything comes back in One Piece! Such a great story, also good call on Luffy's spirit being strong and just asking for food when in zombie form lol. Thanks for the video.
Last time I ate at a buffet was when my marching band was on our way home from an ISSHA Performance. That was in 2013.
21:26 look up Seto Kaiba’s abridged opinion on stairs. LittleKiribo has an amusing rant.
Man, Oda's a great author. He never forgets.
I’ve waited for so long for you to get to the Laboon reveal. My hands are literally shaking with anticipation as I’m typing this 😅
The reason Luffy says that Zoro's zombie was just like Zoro is because Luffy doesn't care what anybody looks like, just how they act. So of course Zoro's zombie would be just like Zoro to him.
You need a curtain rock for helping with cancer stuffs 😅 🤔 my uncle told my cousin Auntie to rinse her head and drink from a water bottle with the rocks in it... It's a neat little rock that looks like a mix between kitten litter and clay and has a weird name 🤨🤔 which is why I couldn't pronounce it and remember it's exact name 😢😔🤷♂️... BUT the point, it actually helped her grow her hair fuller... She needs to drink it & rinse her mouth with it more 😢🙏 but it's just one of those healthy habits we all drag our feet 😅
Hahahaha.. seeing Franky's reaction painted all over your face. Classic. Fair reaction though, that story hits deep.
