  • I recently joined our local rockhound club for a club outing in the mountains of Canterbury. It was a great day out, I didn't take any footage of the hunt itself as I didn't want to distract anyone, but here is the cutting of the agates I found on the day.

I really enjoyed this format that you presented for us. Showing the find then cutting. Some really nice agates that you cut. The funny thing about a lot of agates is that they are like glass, easily fractured. All the best from the land down under lol

Thanks Marie! Yeah, you have to go really slow with the cutting, I speed it up about 40x times but it takes quite a long time in real time!

I was interested in learning how an agate forms. I found a good article written in 2001 by Nancy Marie Brown “How Do Agates Form”. Out of Penn State. Don’t know how to add the web page to the comments here, I am old and don’t do social media that well. Anyway if anyone wants more info on the subject of agate formation I recommend this article. I could even understand it. Cheers from Canada. 🇨🇦

Dan, thanks for pointing out that article. For future use, if you want to add a webpage, highlight the web address and then hit Ctrl-C on your keyboard. That will copy it into the PC memory and then when you want to paste it you can do that with Ctrl-V. Cheers from western Canada (SK) as well!

@@grantfahlman1815 I am using an IPad, I tried to paste the web page to this comment but alas it won’t let me or I just don’t know how. Thanks for the instructions though. Like I said I am old.

@@danhei No worries Dan. An even easier method then is to tap and HOLD your finger in the web address. That should result in a popup that presents various options, including copying. 😉

Wow! That is a gorgeous water line beauty. And the second one was too bad it broke in the saw, but is still gorgeous, and that third one was just Wow! So gorgeous!! And that forth one was really a spectacular agate! Those eyes were special! The fifth one was a nice water line agate and the sixth one was another nice water line agate! Great rocks and fantastic cuts!

What fun! Probably no way to know, but as I watched I was wondering how much time passed as layer after layer was formed.
