    Those piranhas react to the vacuum cleaner about the same way my dog does. ;)

      they're a lot more skittish than cartoons & show. still they have sharp teeth made for ripping/shredding flesh. they eat meat.

    It's so interesting how our perception of particular fish changes when we keep them, and can study them day to day.
    Love and channel support.

    Some plants would put them more at ease. Those tall, jagged rocks are a nasty place for them to possibly crash into when spooked. I had success layering strips of car-window tint film between the light and glass lid of the tank for desired intensity of light... I liked dark and moody, but enough to still see the scales sparkle...

      I agree! We have changed the tank a few times on these guys, Want to go looking for some hardscape again this spring. We just moved and I took the rocks out.

    I think redbellies are very tame compared to other piranha species. I actually got a black piranha today and he already tore apart a feeder fish I had for him. He’s wild caught so I have to train him to eat pellets later on. I know other species such as Caribe Piranhas are also very aggressive compared to red bellies.

    Dont wanna critic you to bad only wanna help, Tank must be at least 3times bigger and use driftwood and plants, Normally piranhas wont attack you but i would not stick my hand in this tank to clean it because when u come to close and they get cornered they will bite you so watch out for that.

    I have 24 piranhas in three different tanks. A 75 gallon, a 150 gallon, and a 180 gallon. I also have blacked out three sides of each tank. Where the glass Is that the lights sits On top of I have put Red duct tape and it makes the tank you look very eerie. I have been keeping Piranhas for almost 7 years and they only eat nightcrawlers, bass Minnows and Croppie minnows.

      I have a very thick gravel bed in the tank and that holds the bulk of the bio load, a 20 long would be a great starter, a 40 long for later on. I want to get mine something longer soon too, they do startle easily

    I’ve been obsessed with Piranha since watching the Lee Majors 70’s B movie Killer Fish as a kid. I’ve heard they are pretty easy to keep as pets and thrive in an aquarium, you just have to be sensible as with most other pets. How do you get on with veterinary care?

    Hi Dea, this was really informative. I think of these guys when I look at my silver dollars. My guys like those worms too... but I don't. I find they are so greasy and give my water an oily film. I have to set up my skimmer when I feed them. Oh and this is not a good food to feed FlowerHorns. They shouldn't get oils in their food or any oily foods. Just saying!

    Thanks for keeping it real and cleaning your filter on camera XD I've always been curious about piranhas but never looked into keeping them. What size tank do you need for them? And they eat mealworms? That's amazing! I would love to have a fish that can eat my gecko's leftover food. I generally avoid feeding worms with exoskeletons to my fish or to my axolotl, but I can see how an exoskeleton wouldn't be a problem at all for these guys. Would they eat dubia roaches, do you think?

    • @DowntheWormHole
      @DowntheWormHole  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      These are in a 55 gal. It is what we got them in and I am sure they would love bigger. They are opportunist in the wild and eat a lot of bugs that fall in the water and dead animals. I do not feed the beetle stage only the worm.

    • @DowntheWormHole
      @DowntheWormHole  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      this is a 55 gal tank, there are 4 very large fish in there. I only have an aquaclear 110 on it for filtration. A lot of my filtration is in my gravel. I keep about 2 inches of gravel in the tank as the filter never gets dirty. Something is sounding wrong in your tank, you have a lot more mechanical filtration then me. I would up the water changes and add some salt to the tank. is there serface water agitation in the tank?

    What kind of filter are you using? And how much do they cost? I got myself a red belly recently and I just have 1 in a 30 gallon as I didn’t think it would be safe enough for more until I finally get my upgrade. My gold fish of 10 years passed away a couple days ago and now I want to get into housing a couple piranhas. I’m not that experienced with them and I am trying do as much research as I can. Right now I have 1 power filter but as seeing as they are more of a predator then my goldfish I know that it is much needed for an upgrade. Also, do you think a bubbler is important to have with these fish? And whats the best and affordable filter in your opinion. Thank you!

    • @DowntheWormHole
      @DowntheWormHole  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am just using an aquaclear HOB that I never have to clean, I use a very deep gravel bed to help keep a large bio filter going, they do not stir up the gravel like gold fish so most crap gets stuck in the gravel. best of luck !!

    Have you ever been bitten by your piranhas? Or any of them tried?

    • @DowntheWormHole
      @DowntheWormHole  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      as long as the light is on they are rather timmid. they are rescues and like to dart a lot and I dont trust them one bit. they have darted towards me but never actually swiped at my hand. I try and keep my hands out as much as possible, I dont think they grew up with much people interaction.

    Completely barren and minimum sized tank, nice! I see you got some less than ideal food to go along with that. I'm impressed... Please do more how to videos!

      With Piranha minimalism is key because of maintenance and given places to hide they will stay hidden for most part...your tank looks great miss dont listen to the self proclaimed piranha guru

    I’m thinking of getting 2. What size tank do you recommend

    • @DowntheWormHole
      @DowntheWormHole  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      As big as you can. I cant wait to move these into a bigger tank. this is a 55 and they are outgrowing it fast! we have moved a lot unintentionally and want to find a 75 gal to move them into as soon as we can. Good luck with them they are neat

    • @piranhaman7265
      @piranhaman7265 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That doesn’t look like a 55, I just moved my 5 red belly’s to a 135 gallon, and my 55 gallon looks way bigger than the tank in this video. Those piranhas look like they barely have room to move around without swimming into one another.

  • @jamespenswick7257

    That is a small tank for that size piranha though.

      agreed. We have been wanting to get a bigger one for a while now.
