Cavatina The Deer Hunter | Classical Guitar Tutorial 1 of 3 | NBN Guitar

  • "Cavatina" written by Stanley Myers in 1970 was originally a fairly short piece composed for the film 'The Walking Stick'. At the behest of John Williams the original piano piece was lengthened and subsequently used in the OST for the war film 'The Deer Hunter' in 1978 after which it rose to a position in the UK Top 20.
    Cavatina is an industry standard piece for guitarists but it is a highly-demanding despite its gentle and flowing nature. This is largely attributable to the complex chords that need to be played as smoothly as possible whilst sustaining the melody notes.
    Performance points:
    try to keep the melody notes sustained
    transition from chord to chord as legato as possible
    use a light rest-stroke to accent the melody
    keep the right-hand steady to increase accuracy

    Thank you, Joshua. As a late guitar starter (in my late 40s) not being able to hold a simple D chord, you've taught me Romance de Amor and Cavatina and given me curiosity about electric guitars. I'm now happy to report back that not only that I've expanded my classical repertoire, but I can play many classic solos pretty decently: Comfortably Numb, Hotel California, Parissien Walkways, The Loner, Bohemian Rhapsody etc. Thanks again for enabling all this joy that I wasn't at all expecting at this phase of life!

      Let the tears flow Baibhav. I know the feeling of finding something that you've wanted to find. There's 3 tutorials for this so make sure you check them all out and download the tabs (or pay for a version that has my fingering suggestions for both hands with music notation and tabs). Hello thanks for an interesting video. I'm not a guitarist, but a keyboard player and musical arranger. I've been having a chat with another musician. He feels this song as written in 3/4 which I completely disagree with. I'm feeling this very much as 6/8. I've seen some horrible easy play organ arrangements where half of the chords are left out and the song is written in 3/4. Paper does not refuse ink. When you count the song are you counting 1 2 3 4 5 6 with the main beats or pulses on 1 and 4 or are you counting 1 2 3 1 2 3 1 2 3 ?

    • @nbnguitar
      @nbnguitar  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tim Pullen Hi. It’s definitely 3/4. Counting it yields 1+2+3+ not 123456 123456. Playing it in 6/8 will give a completely different feel to the piece. Interesting topic for sure :)

    Its not so very difficult to just looking at the cords and righthand.. The problem is making it fluid and "alive". That will take some serious practise.

    • @nbnguitar
      @nbnguitar  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah for sure. The two tricky thing about this piece is being able to hold the chords whilst doing the melody without your fingers falling off, and keeping a nice flow with well-placed rubato.

    At the beginning of the third measure, with bar across 9th fret, the music sheet dictates that the C# on the E string should be played along with B string 10 to 12th fret hammer-on. I notice you don't play the E string C#; rather, the A string F# note at the 9th fret. It's easier for me to play THAT note instead of barring full with the E string included. Is there a reason you didn't go with the exact notes in the score?

      Man, patience is a virtue. I have limited time to make arrangements and I already have a full schedule outside of TH-cam that pays the bills. The arrangements I do take a lot of time and effort and I give all tabs out for free so I ask you very politely to be patient. If I'm too slow for you please ask someone else on TH-cam to make an arrangement, then film and edit a tutorial and then post their tabs for you to use - free.

    • @nbnguitar
      @nbnguitar  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It sure is Richard. Probably one of the most recognisable modern guitar pieces. That Ibanez is a real beauty. I got it second-hand from my friend Jason McNamara who works at Ishibashi Music in Tokyo. You should check out his channel - Ishibashi (English). It's great. I like that floral design too. Sometimes it's a little confusing when you're playing but I don't mind cause there's no such thing as 'wrong notes'.

      Chad that's really amazing of you man. That kind of support means so much as obviously I've put literally 1,000s of hours into making these videos, tabs, backing tracks etc. How are you getting on with Study in D and Milonga (the one with no bar chords)? hahaha

      I will check out video out for sure! i can imagine the inlays being a little confusing, but who cares about that, that's just a matter of getting used to. they really remind me of the steve vai tree of life fret inlay, and man.. i must say i'm in love with that style of fret inlays,. there's just something about it.
      Yea, i do play Ibanez too (Atleast on Electric guitar) i have a SAS32EX-WH.. bit cheaper than yours, but i love it so much, only downside about this guitar is the floating SAT-Pro II bridge, and not locked floyd rose =/
