Cheers Baz for reviewing my baby, I’ve never been so nervous for a review 😅 the no pickup choice was very much after listening to years of your reviews, I am always watching and listening in the background. Have a lovely Christmas break mate ❤
Gorgeous, of course, and you know, he plays all those harmonics, so likely the brightness lends itself to that. Have wonderful holidays and a healthy, peaceful 2024. Thanks for all that you share.
Great review, really think this is really classy and love the aesthetic appointments. Think the wood choice is a great choice that suits Sammy’s harmonic style. Love it. Probably the first Flight I have looked at and thought it is lovely and affordable. Flight listening to professionals will reap rewards in the future. All the best for the festive season for you and yours and wonderful New Year.
Price is cheaper than I expected. I really dig how the spalted maple's black lines match the black top. Less sure about the brown rosewood, I don't think it matches the rest of the color scheme. Overall very cool though.
This is one fantastic ukulele..I loved it the first time I set eyes on it and I now have one …thank you Santa 🎅🏼 ( my hubby really ) I have low G on mine and it sounds divine … it sits along side my beautiful Fireball which was my first ever ukulele last year and I chose it from listening to your review Baz …. Merry Christmas 🎄🥳🥰🦋
Great review as ever Baz. The day the 4sb arrived at the Southern ukulele store i jumped straight in my car and drove down to Bournemouth. I love my 4sb. Thank you Baz for all your great reviews, i enjoyed every one of them. Merry Christmas to you sir
I try not to have expectations,: it's much easier said than done :) I keep expecting Flight to miss, but everything I've come across I can't help but like! Love the originality here. As always, thanks for your honest perspective ~
Wow, what a beautiful instrument. I think if you want something different, the price is ok! Thanks, Baz! Merry Christmas to you and yours and thanks for a great year!
Had I not blown far too much of my Christmas bonus on an aging pickup truck, I would probably be griping about the price point and buying one anyhow. Agree with you about choosing my own pickup. I know you dislike Low G, but this cries out for flourocarbon trebles and Thomastik-Infeld flatwound bass courses (even though that would need different compensation on the saddle).
Gorgeous! Thanks for another great review Baz and for a year of diverse instruments, from the Amazon specials to the amazing luthier crafted masterpieces. Thanks for your time, your obvious passion and unbiased reviewing and intelligent advice. It's been great! Here's wishing many more years of the same. Anyway, happy Christmas, good health to you and yours and looking forward too seeing you in 2024. 👍
I heard Sammy on a recent podcast explaining the design process behind the 4SB. His original choice was apparently for a glossy white top, to which Flight replied with a list of reasons why white was absolutely not going to happen 😁
Thanks Barry for the great review. I’ve been waiting on this one. I saw a photo before it debuted and I knew right away it was going to be super popular because it’s such a looker. As Sammy says the opposite of the Fireball. So glad he got his own model. I’d add a pick up. Happy holidays and happy New Year to you and your family. Enjoy and looking forward to what’s ahead in 2024! 🥂
I bought one of these after watching your review. It just came via UPS today. So beautiful! It is bright sounding, and I am good with that. I have other ukes that are deeper sounding if that is what I want to play. Thanks for the excellent review. Please have a wonderful New Year!
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and your family, Baz. Thanks for all the reviews; looking forward to more in '24 (and maybe some Not A Ukulele reviews, too).
Happy Christmas and New Year to you, too! Beautiful uke, price doesn't sound too bad... and don't worry about the brightness. The sun is bright (and warm), and we can't wait for it to return to the northern hemisphere.
Thanks for yet another great review ( well thanks for another year of great reviews) wishing you and yours a very Happy Christmas and New Year. Take take. Danny 🎄
Merry Whatsit and a Happy New Thingy, Baz! Loving the festive nails, although for one horrified moment I thought you had slammed your fingers in a door😱!
Beautiful ukulele! Sound is tailored for Sammy style. Regarding the price, I'm sure the wood and production costs on this one are higher than other "similar" flights. It's more time consuming to get all of those unique appointments right than just throwing on a pickup. 👍 Great review as usual Baz!
It's a looker for sure!! The rosewood back and sides might be the reason why the extra few bucks. But at the same time, my first thought when I saw the price was "that seems plenty fair". If I were splitting hairs the inlays for the fret dots could have been a little deeper but not a big deal. Thank you for this year BAZ, you crushed it brother. I look forward to another year. All the best to you and yours this holiday season. Cheers.
When I saw 4SB demo this on southern ukes top ten I thought he'd wrote his name in biro behind the headstock. Personally if I had a signature uke is like to advertise the fact (I realise I may be in the minority) i would have liked it in gold to stand out more either on the black body tastefully neatly in gold. Love the feet markers, yeah price is a fraction high but at least it future proofs the price and leads to healthy discounts😊 maybe because as u know I favour Bari scale it does seem maybe too bright for me especially with worth browns, think I'd pop a low g on straight away. Love the fact no amp I never use them anyway. But definitely a strikingly beautiful instrument.
Happy Christmas !!! Great review. And I have enjoyed all the reviews over the year. I’m a little under the weather so I’m staying home and watching football. But that is ok. Was nice to also have your review this morning. I agree with you on the price. Seemed a little too much. And it is a little bright but a great looking ukulele and Sammy is such a great guy. I’m happy for him. Happy new year !
Thank you once more, Baz! Wonderful review as usual! Thanks for the whole year of reviews! Regarding the bright sound of the (also wonderful) 4SB: any idea what strings could make this instrument less bright?
Merry Christmas, Baz. Hope you have a lovely time with your family. Thanks for entertaining us with the fab reviews, you're lovely. Now, this uke. Looks like the love-child of an aNueNue Moonbird and Enya's Taimane special to me. The subtle signature is awesome (I found the Pete Moss MOSS off-putting), but I see influences from other instruments here. I love flight, I've got 4 of them, but I can't help thinking it looks like others. Sorry. Also prefer the sound of my fireball, its not as bright. In saying that, it is a striking looker!
Question for you, Baz. Would you say the 4SB has a similar sound to the AnueNue Moonbird tenor? I have the latter and don't want to have both if they're quite similar. Cheers and thanks so much.
Not sure it's a fair comparison considering the price difference. They are both very good and the 4SB punches above it's weight, but the Moonbird is remarkable in tone
Hmmm! Well I was hoping to be blown away but to be honest, I'm not. Thank you for the review as always Baz. Wishing you and yours a very Merry Christmas and a great New Year.
I've been hoping for this review like a kid waiting for Santa. 38 mil nut width and spruce are both combinations I like. Such an interesting, unique, and clever design. Stunning to look at. I'm ok with the bright sound. Price should be about $299 - $329. Maybe the price will come down after some time. Thanks for this review. Merry Christmas to you and your family.
It is very cool looking! I tend to agree that it is a bit overly bright. I am one of those folks who have well more than 20 ukuleles (most of which are “Ks”), and I play them all, so I hear a lot of sounds, and this one is kind of at the “trebly” end. Probably good for certain playing styles. But I too tend to like kind of “woodier” full spectrum players.
I really don’t see the point of painting a solid top unless the grain is crap. I know it’s only angles and lighting but on the FB page the top looks grey and I prefer it to the black. Your choice of nail varnish may look better with a grey top too 😂😂😂 I hope you and yours have a great Christmas and New Year
Not nearly enough warmth for a tenor scale. Way too chimey for me. I don’t like “painted” tops. But I think the price is right. The intonation sounds spot on and I like the sustain. Happy holidays Baz!
@@GotAUkulele a few years ago, Ohana put out some really chimey tenors. They mounted Aquila strings on them. They had no lower register art all. They were a hard sell for the shop I frequented.
Sorry - I have a policy of keeping away from 'either/or' as the decision is ultimately very personal at that point. They are also very different constructions and uke types. I gave the T1 8.4 and the 4SB 9.4 which is the obvious first answer. But there are subjective personal elements to that scoring
? Are Flight Good manufacturers of Ukes. I know Martin's are good and so on. I'm 60 this year so want a good Uke but not over priced solid wood maybe pickup on board any advice cheers I do like the sound of this think I'm better suited to Tenor rather than Concert as I'm a Guitarist
Flight are a Euro brand making ukes in far east so quite different from Martin - they range from the beginner level to the high end, but very much focussed more on beginner to intermediate. Rather like the Kala brand. They have great looking and sounding ukes, but due to their origin the quality control can suffer at times. Easy way to remedy that is to always buy one from a specialist uke dealer and not places like Amazon. I have a list of stores I trust implicitly on my website
I imagine this may not be a popular opinion, but I think the dark gloss looks really cheap and tacky. Not my cup of tea at all I’m afraid! I’m sure it’ll have plenty of fans though. The dots also feel a bit gimmicky instead of actually being useful. Sounds quite nice tbf!
The dots are very useful to me - the 5,7 and 12 mark out the natural harmonics which I use all the time 😇 I realise it may not be useful to most folk, but to me it makes my life much easier ☺️
@@4stringboy I think clearly separating the 10th and 12th on a short scale length is also really useful. Especially when just playing around with chord shapes moving 5ths up and down.
It is a handsome instrument but the sound was an entire turn off IMO. Too bright and pinky for a tenor. Anyway to its credit Flight just keeps on trucking with new models and that has to reverberate through the industry. HNY to you and yours Baz. Looking forward to another year of fair and fun reviews.

Not when it's thin - this is no thicker than a gloss top - so thin in fact you can see the grain pattern in waves under the gloss.
