As a local you know you are home when you see Emley Moor tower from the M1. Was purple at the Queens funeral, drew crowds of cars/ people from miles around. Very moving and to drive home and see all the local buses with destination signs stating simply 'Thank You Maam', very moving night. That sign about falling ice may date from the 60's, it was a very real issue for the previous tower which sadly collapsed in March 1969 and actually was even taller. It reached as high as the twin towers did in New York but was a guy type tower, not freestanding.
When I was a pupil at Crofton Academy I used to see this when I’d be picked up and dropped off. It’s an oddly amazing site, and I hope it sticks around for many years to come.
It’s pronounced Ar ki va. When I was working in radio had a visit and went up to the viewing platform where all the transmission kit for radio is located . 7 minutes in a small lift inside. There’s a pendulum showing how much it sways in the wind. Got a certificate to say I’d been up it.
I changed a tyre for an engineer on the site last year, he worked at the top of the tower. I asked him the obvious question.... Have you pissed off the top? He smiled and said, of course, I don't come all the way back down when I have to pee 😂
Nice video. I did this place and managed to get it light up purple at night time. Amazing drone footage but one of my lowest viewed vids. This place is awesome. Thanks
emley moor britains tallest freestanding television transmission tower that can be seen from any location in yorkshire even as far as derbyshire & lincolnshire during the night
Visited this place many a time over the years as i live not massively far from the tower. Always been mesmerised by the sheer size of the structure. Had some strange experiences there too as its a prime dogging spot, so if you get 'flashed' at, theyre interested 😂 lol
Looking good ! I was at the same location back in the Summer and walked from the Transmitter back to Canon Hall. This is my video starting at that location plus history on the collapse of the second tower that was on the site th-cam.com/video/6KfvaJPwPmw/w-d-xo.html

I got a certificate in 1999. When it used to belong to NTL.
The fact that the tower is in Huddersfield and i can see it from wakefield scares me 😭
It can be seen from Burnley apparently mate 😅 Don't know why that should scare you
I could see it from my bedroom window in Sheffield.

it was rebult when the original mast collapsed which your host failed to mention
If I looked from my upstairs window at night, I could see it lit up. That was from Sheffield.

Of course that's nothing compared with the Droitwich radio transmitter - which is 1500 metres 😉
(Yep, just kidding)
Climb up that shit bro!
I'm from Emley.
My old schoolmate owns the farm around the mast.
I had some cobs pegged out in the cow field. I thought of tethering them to the mast but it might not have been strong enough. 😝
