Sorry Mike but that beautiful ride took all my atention😁 What I missed here was a little bit more presentation of your new rivet crash as s ride cymbal...from few seconds you provided it sounds like great jazz ride
Another great video. I experimented rivets last year for a few of my cymbals. Bought the rivets on Amazon too and were super cheap. I had a 22" China and an 18" Symphonic Crash that had rivet holes but were missing a few of the actual rivets. Very easy to install and was happy to complete the cymbals! But the sizzler using ceiling fan chain is also an option. I made a video of it on my channel a LONG time ago and it was pretty fun.
Great work on the rivet install. It already sounded nice before, but after was really cool. Perfect for the jazz thing. Speaking of the jazz thing, is there a reason your snare is so overly dampened? Those toms were singing, but the snare sounded a bit choked, to my ears. Wondering if there was a sound you were going for? Good work, again, on those rivets. Bosphorus makes incredible cymbals, and this one (and the others on the kit!) are no exception. Cheers.
It's probably just a personal preference, but I like a very articulate/dry snare sound so that I can get away with more dense playing on there and not loose clarity. Really just a personal choice, not some sort of standard jazz approach I'd say.
Thanks for the great instructional video, Mike, as I really like seeing new ideas rather than just hearing about them. When I was a kid in the mid 60’s, I was in a band, and at that time there was a gadget called a Sizzler that I used for the same sound. It was a piece of aluminum or some other very lightweight metal that was threaded, so it just was spun onto the top of the cymbal stand. It had little rivets at each end that laid right on the cymbal, and they sizzled when the cymbal was hit. Each end of this arm had an elbow joint which allowed me to fold it up, so it didn’t sizzle if I just wanted the regular sound, and it folded back down for the sizzle sound. I have looked for these recently but wasn’t successful in finding any. It produced a great sound. Anyway, thanks for you video. I can’t wait to see what is next for all of us.
have you tried to tie the end of a sizzle chain with a light weight fishing line with loose loop the cymbal stand ? Keep the sizzle chain loose, but won't fall into the holes.
@@malonedrum yup, if you knot it so u slide it up down u the line to change loop size u can adjust the tension. Might not work well if u crash the cymbal very hard. but for lighter work its fine.
I've been an artist Bosphorus Cymbals for the last 10 years. They didn't send them for free, but my deal gets me a really nice discount and the ability to get cymbals directly from the company.
As a vintage drum collector, with around 500 drums and 100 cymbals, this is honestly one of the first times I really think rivets made a cymbal sound better, .... and since it's not vintage and already full of holes, ignore the haters!
Here's the cymbal rivets I used in this video: amzn.to/4436Fxk
You had me at Spotted Cow!✌️
🍻🍻
Glad to see you don't need a drill press for this. I have a 20" A I'd like to do this to, and I don't own a drill press.
You probably should do it that way, but I did it without because that’s what I have available to me.
The rivets really bring that cymbal to life! Well done Mike!
I agree! Thanks for watching Mike.
I like the sizzle from the rivets & I think that cymbal sounds nice with brushes. I’ll bet it really roars with a mallet roll.
Yeah, it sure does!
Great project Mike
Thanks!
I just had 2 rivets installed into a 22” flat ride I have. It’s what the cymbal needed.
Every cymbal has it's own needs!
I’m just getting back into playing again after an extended break and found your channel. I’m enjoying the content. Keep up the great work! Thank you!
Hoping it serves as inspiration to get behind the kit! Best of luck to you on your new drumming journey.
@@malonedrum Thank you!!
really nice sound! I specially liked it in the jazz context, as you said.
Yes, all context based, but for me, this is a great sound.
Sounds so much better with the rivets
Agreed! I use this all the time now

All of those Bosphorus Cymbals are amazing!
@@malonedrum have one👍
Sounds pretty cool
Thanks!

I'll have to check it out!
It sounded good before, but I think what you did made it sound even better!! Muy bien señor!
Muchas gracias!

Cool. Personal preference, which is what it’s all about! Thanks for the reply! Best to you!
Nice playing, bro.
Thanks Uwe!
@@malonedrum I got a 20“ Pang with 5 rivets from the 70‘s that I just love on my far right.
@@uwepetersen I tried a pang and it was tough for me to find my voice on it, but I adore Mel Lewis and Jeff Hamilton who use them so gracefully.
Try the sabian ozone ride. You'll love it
I got the one I like!

Like tie it around the cymbal, and loop it down below the cymbal on the stand?

@@deaffatalbruno That's a great hack, and makes sense. I'd probably not be willing to do it every time, but I love the creativity.
why tune that rack tom high? any specific reason?
It's a jazz kit, so typically drums are tuned much higher in that scenario and application.
Whoa, waaait a minute. Back up. They SENT you a box of cymbals? How does that happen?

@@malonedrum Yeah…I don’t know how that works. In my world I have to buy cymbals. 😞
Do cymbal manufacturers get in touch with music majors? It seems like a somewhat common arrangement from what I hear.

Exactly, I’m usually not into rivets in a cymbal over a chain, but in this case, rivets win.
