- Enfield Council's food inspectors Mary and Claire visit a Chinese takeaway, where they discover a rabbit which belongs to the owner's daughter and is being kept in a food preparation area. They also find an area awash with mouse droppings and urine, and in an outside storage shed there are the remains of a dead rat or mouse.
Matt investigates a countryside crimewave which sounds like something out of the 18th century - animal rustling. Pigs, sheep and cows are being stolen, loaded into lorries and driven away to be illegally slaughtered. If it ends up in the catering industry we could be eating illegal, unsafe, stolen meat without even knowing it.
While food inspectors concentrate on businesses, most cases of food poisoning happen in people's homes or workplaces. Chris Hollins visits a fire station in Lincolnshire - the firefighters cook a tasty fry-up at the station, but there are dangers lurking in their kitchen. Our resident expert Ben gives the kitchen a once over and uses a gadget to test for bacteria.
Chris Hollins meets Darren, from Lancashire, who ate one mouthful of undercooked pork chop and ended up in hospital. He cooked the pork for five minutes and could tell it wasn't quite right but swallowed one piece. Three weeks later he woke with a headache and tingling in the corner of his face and within 48 hours he was in intensive care fighting for his life. He had contracted listeriosis, and the bacteria went to his brain - causing meningitis.
In the UK we devour 11.5 billion sandwiches every year. Making a sandwich may look simple but the lunchtime favourite is a potential breeding ground for lethal bacteria. Chris visits Raynor Foods in Chelmsford which prides itself on food safety and makes 32,000 sandwiches each day.

I'm both! Well, I was a microbiologist (hold a grad degree in micro) until I started working for a health department as a health inspector. And the health inspector was being ridiculous. The risk of E.coli is present on any raw root vegetable or leafy green, they should all be treated as contamination risks. In fact, I recommend to food establishments that they disinfect their vegetable washing sinks before they do any other food prep. Some asian places will wash noodles in their veg sinks, which poses a cross-contamination risk from the raw veggies previously washed. That inspector keeping him from making his salad was really reaching. The inspector should have been looking closer at temperature regulation in the fridge units, hand washing, raw vegetable handling and washing before making any decisions. If the guy is washing his veg, peeling his veg, and washing his hands between tasks, with proper sanitizers to clean food contact surfaces, and temperature control in his fridge, then there isn't a bigger risk than what already exists in virtually every kitchen! Unless there is an active recall on that specific product, then the inspector was really reaching. In the USA, producers will voluntarily recall their products and they are obligated to contact establishments with their product.
U actually need to sinks for veg and chopping boards that are different colours for rare meet veg
Well it was pretty stupid even the carrots weren't washed (which they should be) the carrots that go into coleslaw would have been peeled meaning that the risk of E coli would have been zero because the Ecoli risk comes from dirt that these vegetables grow in.
It's another case of the government going mad with power and over policing small insignificant things while allowing real dangers to happen in the open (I believe there was mould in the food preparation area that only got glossed over while the health inspector made a big deal over washed and peeled carrots)
He had multiple chances to take care of the roaches yikes.
My coworkers laugh at me because I always order my food well done. I grew up on a farm and realize what can go wrong.
I'm sort of similar, but more down to the quality of the beef ( I'll take about steaks here ). From my point of view, I'd prefer a Blue steak ... But It does have to be from an establishment I know and trust.
If it is a descent establishment I'd go for medium rare ... If it is somewhere I don't know and am not impressed with I would go for cremated :)

When I was as young as 12 years old, I already knew you're not supposed to put cooked food on surfaces that had raw meat. It boggles my mind, didn't their mum teach them that? It's basic hygiene

He's not wrong, though. The FSA is taking a very 'ivory tower' stance on certain issues. We have a very high standard here, but there is always such a thing as overregulation and germophobia.

Meantime these same people having a problem with vegetables possibly containing e.coli (the chances are next to nothing to get it from that), will go out and eat that dirt cheap mass produced meat and poisonous vegetables that MONSANTO fucked up to hell and back and then wanna be picky about the cleanliness of vegetables. That's a double standard if I ever seen one. Eating disgusting cheap food, and then wanna sound caring of their bodily intactness. Idiots… At the same time overweight, never ate an organic product in their lives and love that cancer causing pus milk of brutally & sexually tortured cows.

I worked in Food Microbiology Lab. It was recommended not to use gloves. There is a higher risk when you use gloves of cross contamination between products, workers dont feel if their gloves need to be change as if you had bare hands, you feel that you need to wash your hands. In a ready to eat factory having a piece of glove in your product will certainly make the front page of the news.
Thats because people are stupid and those that create the rules address the issue directly. Using gloves properly is really not a rocket science, people are just lazy and in many cases have no consideration for the health of others. As to a glove in food I'd rather have a piece of glove that accidentally ended up in my food than having to eat something that someone touched with bare hands after leaving the toilet without washing hands, but the latter wont make the news. And as a guy living in uk and visiting men's toilets in various places I can say that the scale of guys urinating and leaving the toilet like nothing happened without washing their hands is unbelievable.
@@Piterszczyk well most uk toilets are badly designed, i mean why put the pull side of the door on the inside of the toilet, meaning even though i wash my hands i have to touch a doorknob covered in someone elses pee, thereby negating me washing my hands, would it kill them to turn the doors round?
@@ste887 You're right, I've been using either my sleeve or a tissue to open such doors on the way out from the public toilets multiple times. Very impractical and I'm not sure what's the reason, maybe to stop people from hitting a person who is about to enter the toilet? Or some daft fire safety regulations. Not sure, just guessing
point taken, however, a large deep clean sink with antibacterial soap with paper towels should be near the food prep area. Putting a sign up in toilet room wash hands before returning to work is not always done and managers can not monitor compliance.

Any concern about the livelihood of owners or staff in ANY food business is completely irrelevant; where peoples' health and even lives are at risk.

As an EHO I get your point completely, however we work in the public's interest. We have several different COP's that we must adhere too. It's never an easy decision, no matter how easy you may think it is.

I worked in a Chinese restaurant where the chefs had no English, here in Ireland . Had them take their food hygiene course in Chinese . Then the owner wanted me to go into the kitchen to fill out charts and order. How pathetic was that. So your chefs don't know wat their doing and I have to cover it. I no longer work there . Money racket all these courses .
Especially in places where anyone barely speaks English

PatriciaMcAll Well this show shows that cooking at home is just as worse as eating out, most home cooks do not use proper procedures in preparing food safely. I think I met more people who got food poisoning from home cooking than a restaurant.

They should come to Harlesden and inspect one of those nasty, dirty halal takeaways that we got here. I would not feed my dog anything from those places. Just the smell coming out of their door when I am passing by is appaling.
In Crewe almost every Chinese, Indian, Kebab shop, all got a rating of one. Pubs, fish and chip shops, no problem 4-5 rating.

i use sticky traps all around my house, not for mice , but to catch the pesky brown recluses and black widow spider that infest every spring in a worse way. These sticky traps are hidden in dark out of the way places where these deadly spiders we have can live. A lot better way doing it without using poisons, because we do have two cats that live with us and insect poisons are harmful to them.
I'm in the US, but I never buy these pre-packed sandwiches, fruit salads, etc. that they sell in convenience stores here. I figure they've been touched and breathed on by about 20 people before being put into their own little plastic greenhouse where it can all grow and flourish. No thanks.

Isnt it ironic at 49.20 theres a video take on a factory.. It seems the factory appointed someone whom speaks english, understands food and seems knowledgeable. My mrs worked in one when she was 18... Most of the factory workers were european and didnt know any english and were absolutely disgusting when it came to hygeine. Yes they washed hands but didnt practise good hygeine at the work place. Most spat in the products, crossed foods, and used same wash dish cloths in cleaning regards. Only person whom done a good hygeine job was secruoty gate guard. He had nothing to do with it! >_

I actually disagree with gloves, the problem is that wearing gloves can be seen as some sort of panacea for cross contamination. I started in the hospitality trade back in the 80's when they were not used, it was drilled into us about hygiene.
Gloves and skin are near enough the same as cross contamination, but how many people are taught about how to take off gloves ? It is quite a complicated process.

Animals that are a proper part of the food chain that are part of the regulated industry are killed humanely. The ones that are being killed inhumanely are the ones that are being stolen.
