    I heard him play this at the Hunter College Auditorium, in NYC. The audience broke into applause after the first movement. Unforgettable.

    This is definitely one of the best performances of this piece I've ever heard. Gilels is joy to listen to.

    The music at 15:45 inexpressibly lovely. Can there be anything more consoling for us on Earth than the irridescent calm, grace and beauty of the entry into this final movement as concieved by Beethoven yet divinely expressed by the genius of Gilels.

    Beyond any kind of discussion, this is by far the best performance of this incomparable masterpiece. The handling of dinamic contrast, the use of pedal and the modulations are simply beyond any other performance.

    With the Beethoven Piano Concerts with Ludwig, his Brahms Piano Concerts with Jochum and the recording of the Beethoven Piano Sonatas, Gilels left us a bunch of Masterworks. There's also Annie Fisher about playing these Sonatas, but am really fond of Gilels renditions. 🎵🎶🆗👍❤️🤗

    This performance moved me like no other and I have Gilels complete yet to be forever unfinished Beethoven Sonatas. Is this a different recording or was I just ready to hear what I already have? Amazing performance on all levels.

    Amazon MP3 music wants $1.29 per movement. Glad I got the Deutsche Grammophon CD of Emil Gilels' late Beethoven piano sonatas back in the day for $12 though it wasn't in BMG's classical music club catalog. Looks like you might be able to get the Henle urtext edition for free from the Petrucci Library at imslp.org. I wonder if there's a library of FLAC files of Giliels', Pollini's, Solomon's and Schnabel's stuff somewhere...

      I'm used to it a bit slower in places, too. Gilels seems to go very fast in the fast bits and that gives an extra relevance to the slower bits. You can tell I'm not a musician

    I am a great fan of Emil Gilels. But for comparison hear this sonata also with Dieter Zechlin

    • @stonefireice6058
      @stonefireice6058 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s a mistake to compare, there are many excellent interpretations of Waldsteim, it’s what you consider to be the best for yourself. Even pro- judges can never agree on their opinions. But Gilels dazzled so many in his life: Rubinstein, Rachmaninov, Horowitz, Prokofiev, Shostakovich, Karajan, Britten, Ormandy, Munch, Rostropovich….. he doesn’t need more judges!
