Hello Tobias, great video. I've been struggling with this topic for a while as well, most of this year I've been trying to get a good sound just recording guitar preamp and using IR's. There is one more thing people can try to get more realistic sound and better bottom end, they could use power amp IR's. I found few of them on overdriven.fr, they were created using power amps with EL34, 6L6, 6V6 and KT77 tubes. Though it was an improvement I still wasn't satisfied so I ordered Torpedo Captor and tomorrow I will try recording silently full amp. Hope this suggestion helps some of your viewers.
    Kind regards,
    Aleksandar

Love the video....interesting topic for all of us. Cool riffs too! The background music is a bit distracting for people with ADD like me.

I am not debating the difference.....there is a difference. However, the scale of the difference is on the right side axis. So if you see the scale you can realise that the difference is 0-3 db throughout the range and maybe around 4 db on the bass. It is not massive but also not zero.

I wish the background music was lower when you are explaining things.

Will the loader box work for fender HR deluxe pre amp out?

Hello. From today I saw your channel and it is extremely useful! May I ask, I use Laney GH100R (because I fell in love with it the first time I saw it and decided to take it) I use it at home and for this reason I did not take the cabinet sound (too loud). I know that the sound will not be good when cooked with a cabinet. I connected it with an XLR cable from the input of the amplifier to my Yamaha mixer "MG10XU", would this cause great damage to my Laney AMP? Thank you and good luck in the future !! (Stay Heavy)

My tube amp already has a direct output ! lol Wouldn't that be the same as using the Torpedo Captor?

No, unless you can switch off the power amp you still need a load connected. Don't ever run it without a cabinet or load.

Can I just go straight from my JVM 205 head into a focusrite and use cab IR’s? I am new to all this stuff.

    • @TobiasJust

      Hey mate,
You got two options using the JVM 205. On the back panel there is an emulated line out with an XLR jack. If you keep your amp in standby (still always keep a cab connected!) this XLR jack will output your preamp sound with a speaker simulation. You can't add another ir since this sound is processed already. But you might like it for quick recordings.
Second option is a load box or hardware ir loader or any device that is made to be placed between your amp and your speakers, which will grab a signal of your sound from in between. This can be recorded using your interface. Since it is not processed, you must use irs so get a good sound.
Third option is to use the fx loop send into your audio interface and then add irs, but it's lacking the oomph of your Marshall's power section.
No matter what you do: always make sure you have a load or cabinet connected when you fully turn on your amp, otherwise you will fry the power section.
      Cheers
      Tobi

Does a good amp head with speaker emulated line out sound better than an amp modeler with speaker ir?

Hey man! Great video, can you tell me the experience with Torpedo Captor and JVM410H ?? I’m planning to buy the same setup with out the cab, should I go for 8ohms one or 16ohms one? Much appreciated 🙏🏼

Thanks mate! I'm using the Captor all the time when I record my tube amps and I don't want to miss it anymore.
If I was you, I'd take the 8 ohm version because every amp should have an 8 ohm output. By the way: You just need the impedance when you use the captor as a load box for your amplifier, so without speakers. If you connect a guitar speaker to the captor and the captor to your amplifier, the speaker will disable the internal load and "overwrite" the 8 ohm of the captor. So you can use the 8 ohm captor in between a 4 ohm or 16 ohm setup as long as you don't use the internal load. This is nice when you're gigging with your band and some other guitarists are providing the guitar cabs. Just set your amplifier to match the impedance of the guitar cabinet, place the captor in between and send the DI signal to the FOH for nice sounds. But I have to say I don't really like the cab simulated output of the captor, so I'm using a hardware IR loader with some Marshall and Mesa IR's and then pass this signal over to the FOH when playing live. When you're recording at home, you can just use any IR loader.
I just recorded a guitar cover, using only the vocals of the original song. All guitars, bass and drums were made myself. The guitars have been recorded using the JVM and the captor only, so you can have a listen and see if you like the sound.
      Cheers

@@TobiasJust Hi Tobias. I have the same setup (JVM & Captor but the X version 8 ohms) can i use it on 16 ohm for attenuation?

Sehr gut. Das muss doch weit mehr Subscriber generieren. Kapier das nicht.

You need to turn up the background music by a 1/2 dB because your voice is still (barely) discernible. But maybe your intention is to annoy the visitor.

Sorry Bro, but I had to stop watching, as the background music is extremely annoying if someone want to understand what you are telling. So it is a pity. One thing I was missing is that also the cabinet with the loudspeakers and the mic have great influence on the recording, not only the power amp section and all the stuff before.
