"Opus Conspiratus"
I walk up and down the spine of an abandoned old empire. I see its many ghosts, diaphanous yet palpable. They greet me relucently with a relief in their eyes telltale of sadness, emptiness, a look of forsakenness that dilates as their hope circumscribes.
I see Hermes leaning up against a mailbox looking up at the sky then back down at his feet, Zeus sitting atop a flight of stairs scratching his head, Hades propping himself up with a shovel next to Persephone, pursing her purplish-red stained lips, Poseidon turning water into mud, Dionysus passed out beside Demeter, asleep beneath a cherry tree, Aphrodite collecting its fallen blossoms, Athena watching Artemis and Apollo chase eachother around Hephaestus, poking a fire with a stick and Hestla, sweet Hestla, who could forget about her?

Frank sat in bed listening to the squeak of the swamp cooler as it whirred humidity about the house, counted his fingers and his toes up to ten apiece then returned to a shadow bird he gestured upon the wall with the buckling of his thumbs.
