I remember singing this in elementary school, and being sent to the principal's office! Hey! I WAS JUST A KID, and I felt the tune was catchy! I thought a ding a ling was the way the phone rang!

I was a radio DJ when this was released. Fortunately the station manager didn't get the double entendre and so it made it to the Playlist. Too funny. I got a good chuckle every time it aired.

Hi William, yes I heard it too but believe it or not this reached #6 in the UK charts around this time of year back in 1977! Alan and Mel laughed their heads off, 'Oh I've never done anything like this before, sigh' lucky her! The guy in the video really did look like 'a telephone man', which British Telecom engineers copied immediately afterwards...!!!

I sung this in the Liverpool centenary. My friend Janice and I where doing. THE HOUSE OF THE FUTURE. Dave, the man who had to stay behind the scenes was a bit deaf so this buzzing and ringing of appliances, incl. A slimpline trlephone NEVER went off according to plan so I had to shout yo him, DAVE in a falsetto voice, to ring dong buzz and ping. Microwave video radio telio. Etc. Then rent a crowd, my cousins, the beegees turned up with my Aunty Ada, their Mum, my Dad's sister. And we, me and Janice went into this dong. She had the 45 inch version. Barry stormed off, Robin and our Maurice where laughing, Aunty Ada loved me cos I am cheeky and a better singer, was better😂Some old bags got the idea that I was a juvrnile dilinquent. Nevermind. I rnjoyed it, as did Ada, Robin and Mo😂❤❤❤

This song was on the radio quite a bit during the summer that I turned 13. My best friend and I used to make fun of it: “Why is there even a song about a telephone man? That is so dumb!” Neither of us had a clue what it really meant, the naïve little girls that we were!
Fast-forward about 45 years: Memorial Day Weekend, 2022…I heard this on SuriusXM 70s channel, after literally not hearing it since its heyday! Of course, this time around, I completely understood what the song was REALLY about. And…I also quickly understood why the song is best kept at the bottom of the dustbin of forgotten songs. Yeesh!

Remember it being played on KFRC in San Francisco. The DJ was saying THIS IS A HIT IN U.K.!???He played sample of it,panning it badly. Those are terrible, lyrics!! We didn't know it was double entendre song! He didn't play entire song. LOL..We heard putting phone in bedroom, ..turns out SHE GOT IT in bedroom also! LOL! It reached #6 in UK and #18 in US billboard charts. Those numbers earned her a *Ding-a-ling* 😄

If she needed a phone putting in, how did she phone the phone company?

      1. From a neighbor's, friend's, or family member's home.
      2. From a pay phone (they were on every street corner and at every gas station back then).
