  • It comes around every year, the rise in the cost of your train ticket. But many Londoners will have escaped that as bus and Tube fares have been frozen by the Mayor. But Critics say the cost of the fare freeze is too much and it's stopping ‘badly needed’ investment. BBC London’s Transport Correspondent Tom Edwards reports.

    You just can’t please some people:
    *fares rise*- “Oh no. I can’t afford this. Now I’m going to learn to drive”
    *fares frozen*- “Oh no. It takes ages to get on an old, overcrowded train. I’m always late. I’m going to learn to drive”
    Where else is the money gonna come from???

      I think fares frozen actually would be the better option.

    In comparison to Paris and Milan the London tube fares are much higher. Also the railways is by far more expensive in UK than in France.

      because it's privatized and receives less subsidies. kind of stupid in the biggest city of europe and with so much traffic.

      Maurazio all trains are full to the bream at £160 a month so imagine if the price was like Paris at £75 regardless of which zone u coming from.
      It will be a disaster

      Privatise essential services and it becomes all about greed for more and more profit.

      The French simply have more subsidy. It has nothing to do whether it is privatised/nationalised. Remeber the 90's before privatization, the service was expensive (at the time) yet was even more shambles then it is now. Germany has also seen privatization, however the services retain their subsidy, meaning it is cheaper for passengers.

      +Achilleas Labrou Public transport in the UK is probably more expensive than anywhere else in Europe apart from Scandinavia and Switzerland.

      By cutting on an inefficient service, he his making it even more inefficient as the rail operators have less expendable capital to improve their facilities

      David Fernandes. That just goes to show how stupid you are and I doubt that you're a Londoner - just prejudice from afar I guess. People don't hate him in London. They know what he is like and voted for him.

      Alexander Campbell. Fares have been going up in London above inflation levels for years and are the most expensive in Europe. Someone needs to put a stop to that. How come other countries manage to upgrade their transport systems without extorting money from passengers? It's because the importance of the transport infrastructure is recognised and supported by governments whereas our government prefers to waste money by giving rails systems over to profit makers, for instance.

    TfL should go study Tokyo commuter service rail networks.

    • @heliotropezzz333
      @heliotropezzz333 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think most rail networks are supported by their governments and are nationalised, and are therefore not so expensive, but ours isn't. It all has to be screwed out of passengers including a nice profit for the private profiteers.

    • @11holic11
      @11holic11 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      In Tokyo, most of rail companies are privatized without any financial support from government. So trains remain terribly crowded in rush hour. I wish Londoners make better decision for comfortable trains.

    • @heliotropezzz333
      @heliotropezzz333 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      11holic11. That's why it's better to be a publicly run service, because it does not have to provide a profit to be viable.

    • @11holic11

    • @heliotropezzz333

      11holic11. The budget would come from the revenue from fares.
