Not just for London, supposedly Privatisation was supposed to create choice. The reality is that the only choice in terms of who runs the services are decided by government, we the passengers have no choice over how we travel from A-B by train. Local services should be devolved to the local councils, mostly for the larger cities, and the longer distance intercity services could possibly be nationalised, bring fares down to a more acceptable level. For the equivalent journey length in continental Europe, it is a third of the price that it is here

sbaker, there is often no choice anyway because often only one company can run one line. Also there's less flexibility for passengers in the system. For the best ticket prices you have to book journeys in advance, otherwise you are fleeced. Also tickets for one company are usually not valid for another company's routes and you have to follow one company's route or pay extra even if it would be quicker or better to change during the journey. Many companies have also stopped through services that used to exist and now people have to change when they didn't used to. It's all rubbish and I'm astonished at how little people here know about railways.

TfL have shown that a government body can run rail services. When the east cost was government ran it was brilliant as well, now look at it. The railways can be run by the country, we need to renationalise. It would mean better services and profits would remain in the uk, unlike now where all profit goes abroad.

The rents of the central areas of London are very high. Many prefer to work in London but live further away and use the trains daily. These kind of citizens depend totally on railway services. They use the trains unavoidably at specific hours during working days and that pushes the railway organization to its limits.
I am not old enough but the privatization of the national railways was a big mistake. The competition of private companies is good but in the case of railways many people are obliged to choose specific railway lines at specific hours and private companies exploit that. After all private companies want to maximize their profit and that is not necessarily bad.
Imagine if each Underground line was owned by different private companies.
Some regulatory pressure by each government would be beneficial.

Yes privatisation was a mistake. The government never subsidised British rail to the extent that they are subisidising private rail companies, and even now they are bailing them out with millions of pounds over and above their contracted terms. With a national rail system there would be none of the restrictions about which routes and train companies the tickets are valid for.

    • @benthrussell618
      @benthrussell618 6 ปีที่แล้ว

The mistake made when privatisation happened was that there is no competition between companies for the same routes - all trains from A to B are the same company. If the govt allowed rival companies to compete on the same routes, rather than monopolising a section of track for a certain company, we wouldn't have this problem

I personally would think that London Overground should take over the suburban services in Southwest London, South London and Southeast London to help boost more services and of course new trains. Plus London Overground should also operate the West Ealing-Greenford branch line, the new proposed West London Orbital and of course the Moorgate Line from Moorgate to Hertford North. And with the extension to Barking Riverside that is to be completed this year (with yet another proposed extension to Abbey Wood) and yes London Overground should also extend the East London Line from Norwood Junction to East Croydon.
As London Overground currently operates the North London Line, West London Line, East London Line and South London Line. Forming the London Overground orbital route. And London Overground operates the Euston-Watford Junction DC Line, Lea Valley Lines (Liverpool Street-Chingford, Cheshunt and Enfield Town) and the Romford-Upminster branch line in East London. Since they took over those lines back in 2015 that Greater Anglia once operated those services.
And with Crossrail (Elizabeth Line) operating services to & from Shenfield and Abbey Wood to Reading, Heathrow Airport Terminals 2 & 3, Terminal 4 and Terminal 5 which should of been completed in December 2019. But it’s now scheduled for late 2021 or mid/late 2022. And Crossrail 2 also in the planning that will link from Southwest London to Northeast London and North London via Chelsea and City of London which will happen in 5-8 years time. And maybe London Overground could also operate a shuttle service from Stratford to Meridian Water.

Just take all of them into Crossrail routes. Really hope Crossrail 2 will run at 60+ tph in each direction (should be possible with double tracking). This will make easy transport links, fares that count on a lot more lines etc.
It would be awesome for the Southern Crossrail 2 stations (Surbiton, Norbiton, Teddington, Kingston etc), which could get up to 15 tph with upgrade works on every branch. Raynes Lane would need a lot of work but just imagine 1 train every 4 minutes into destinations like Euston St Pancras, Clapham Junction, Victoria, Broxbourne...
One line I feel really should become Crossrail 2 is Stansted Express. Trains are utter garbage, slow af, unreliable, old... They are so bad changing onto the Victoria line at Tottenham Hale gets you into Central London faster.

Trains are already automatic on the Northern, Jubilee, Central and Victoria lines, with more lines coming in about 5 years. The train automatically calculates how long it needs to stop so as to not hold up the line but stop safely as well

TfL staff are rarely on strike, in fact much less than the likes of Southern, South Western Railway and Thameslink. No strike action has been called by Crossrail drivers, and even then they do already operate between Liverpool Street and Shenfield. Train drivers also don't just push a button, there's a lot of skill, like driving a car but with faster response times and great route knowledge, it's more like being a taxi driver but for 1000+ people

Its alot more than just 1 button. Driving a train is much harder than you think.

Pedestrianise the railway. It would reduce congestion and air pollution.

The big issue with the fall of British Rail was that the solution was to "privatize" but in reality no problems were solved. It's the same service as before but with a new sticker. Nothing changed. The issue is that there should be a balance of government oversight and private operation for any rail system, but it is STILL a socialist system. Europe is too socialist. How about NO government control? Free yourselves, it's not like the Queen would oppose. It's the stupid socialist British government that thinks they need to protect and control the people.
No wonder we revolted: y'all are living in the 10th century.
Amtrak has its own problems, but it's different. The fall of PRR and the New Haven resulted in a tax subsidized corporation that work fine only if there is huge ridership... so low ridership as with the U.S. Should be further controlled by subsidized operations. As ridership increases, which it needs to for us, the government can let go.
But ridership in whatever's left after Brexit is huge. SO LET GO OF THE GOVERNMENT CONTOL! Follow the leader, we have... well... Trump is our president, maybe just appreciate our system.
