    Good job! With the mandrel being multiple layers, remove the screws, slide the center out, then you have clearance to get the sides out. There’s also a 3D printed version of this tool, with instructions. 🤓

    hi, i'm on a similar quest here. A couple things I noticed that might help. First off, go watch The Idahoan's video on exactly this subject ("Making AR Springs from Scrap Steel"). Summary: Heat the metal to red hot and slowly cool (don't quench) BEFORE wrapping. That'll make it easier to work with. Then once formed, heat it back up to red hot and this time quench it in oil that has been preheated to about 400 degrees. So that's the main thing. The other thing I'd suggest is making your form in basically 3 layers in a way that you can remove the middle layer (slide it out along the length), so the top and bottom parts just fall out in the newly opened up space, for easier removal from the form.
    Looks like tricky stuff, good luck! Did it run?

    is the heat required? any metallurgists out there that can confirm the effects of heating the wire in its "wound" form?

    • @jasmineirwin7166
      @jasmineirwin7166 ปีที่แล้ว

      Iam pretty sure the wire is already heat treated so putting additional heat on it will just soften it a little which is not a great thing with springs. But as long as you don’t turn the wire purple or blue it should be ok.

    Your first mistake was using spring wire...use regular wire then temper it to be a spring

    • @rainerstoff7561
      @rainerstoff7561 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Does this work? I thought u have to use spring wire.

    • @jasmineirwin7166
      @jasmineirwin7166 ปีที่แล้ว

      Regular wire is probably just mild steel which is not heat treatable. But if you take the music wire heat it up red hot then immediately put it in a bucket of ashes over night then it will be soft like mild steel. Then you could easily bend it around a mandrill and then heat treat it once it’s the deserved shape

  • @mojojomo6750

    Technically you are not making springs, as the wire you bought is already 'springy'! Making a spring would include tempering. I'm looking for info on how to restore springyness to springs that lost it when they were heated red-hot. Reheating and dunking into oil doesn't work for me, nor did it for the one YT video I found that dealt with the issue - practically every other video about springs starts with already-springy bars.
