Making Compression Springs

  • I was having trouble finding springs to use in a product I'm making that were to my liking so I decided to make them myself. Here is how I turned my own springs in my shop using a mini lathe.
    I already owned the lathe and I made the mandrel from some scrap rod I had laying around. I also used a plastic rod (more scrap I had) with a hole drilled through it to guide my wire while winding the springs. I used spring steel music wire to make the springs. These turned out great and although they aren't very precise, extreme precision isn't required in the application these will be used in.
    I hope this video is useful to someone else. If you found this video entertaining or informative please consider subscribing to my channel. Likes and comments/feedback are always appreciated too!

    You are supposed to heat them to first harden them then you heat them again to temper them.
    I think the first heating depending on the metal is up to the point where the metal looses its magnetic characteristic. Then quench it into water or oil and swish it around. This heating makes the metal hard but brittle. Then it is heated like in an oven up to about 400 degrees for 2 hours then let it cool slowly. This gets rid of the brittleness. Do this step two times. Heat wait cool. Heat wait cool. Now the spring will be hard. Springy, long lasting, and tough.

      That sounds like some good information, thank you!
      Honestly, for what I use these on that isn't necessary. They aren't under much pressure, just a spring to tension spools of thread pretty lightly.
      Great tip though for others looking to make something more substantial!
      Thank you for sharing your knowledge and I will pin this so it shows up at the top of the comments list so others watching may see it and gain some useful information 👍

      @@adrianharrison5208 I'm not sure. I know for my purposes, this (as I did in the video) works just fine but I'm definitely not an expert on the subject.

    Cool process, is there a way you can make several at once and just snip them apart?

    • @TheFishingHobby
      @TheFishingHobby  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, you can just make multiple holes in the rod and cut the spring and move to the next hole. My mandrel isn't very straight or long enough but I will probably buy one that diameter and do just that. The end of the rod would need to be supported in the tailstock of the lathe for making multiple springs.

    Thanks for this video. The wire is wound on the rod without tension but only by guiding in the turret : In this, case which ratio spring diameter / rod diameter do you obtain ?

    • @TheFishingHobby
      @TheFishingHobby  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The rod diameter is about 6mm and the inside diameter of the springs are approximately 9.5mm. I do use enough tension with my fingers on the wire to keep the wire wrap against the rod while wrapping.

    • @michelespinasse1763
      @michelespinasse1763 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheFishingHobby Thank you for your answer. I obtain a ratio, a little smaller ( 1.50 or 1.55), with a DIY system on the lathe turret that tighten the wire.

    Hey,
    Good job done by you 👍
    I am curious to know the relationship between the mandrel/shaft diameter and final Inner diameter of spring.
    As it opens after removal from mandrel.

    • @TheFishingHobby
      @TheFishingHobby  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The way I do mine, the spring inside diameter is about 40% more than then mandrel diameter. That would probably vary a little by how much tension is placed on the wire as it is fed onto the mandrel.

    • @shivamkumarsoni2017
      @shivamkumarsoni2017 4 ปีที่แล้ว
