    In this video, we delve into the art of constructing the Loomis Head, followed by engaging with a specially designed worksheet to challenge our minds. This worksheet prompts us to draw the Loomis Head from every conceivable angle, providing a comprehensive exercise to enhance our understanding and mastery of this fundamental drawing technique. Through this practice, we significantly bolster our grasp on construction and form-building, particularly honing our skills with spheres and ellipses, which are foundational to achieving accurate and dynamic representations in drawing.

    "Try not to draw from your wrists but from your shoulders" That statement changed everything, before I was drawing a sphere through wrist and I'm having a hard time making a perfect one. As I started to draw from my shoulders it is indeed much controllable than drawing from your wrist. Thank you for making this video, this is such a must watch video for those inspiring artists in the future.

    A strange mental trick that helps me draw the loomis head after having gained an initial understanding of it is to think of it not as construction, but as taking its structure from your brain and putting it onto the paper. I hope this can possibly help those struggling or exploring possibilities!

    This video changed me. It's brilliant in more ways than just the educational content. The pace, the general drawing/process advice, and the simplified explanation of the task: PHENOMENAL. I additionally love the emphasis that the practice itself "enhances the rendering engine in your mind."

    • @AlfieBerger
      @AlfieBerger  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      In glad you liked that rendering engine part. It’s true 3d spatial stuff we are not born good at so we must work hard to develop it. But when you do there is a new level of freedom to create anything out of your head! Thank you for watching and writing such a nice comment!!

    Thank you so much for this! I've spent years being thoroughly dissatisfied with my own drawing abilities, not able to figure out why I can copy visual images fairly competently, but completely suck at trying to draw figures without those kinds of references. Turns out I've just had zero training in art techniques and never learned any of the fundamentals - who'd have thunk artistic ability requires TECHNIQUES that need to be PRACTICED, huh? 😀I'm going to edu-ma-cate myself from now on - and this video is a great start for me!

    • @AlfieBerger
      @AlfieBerger  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Aww don’t be so hard on yourself. Figure inventing and drawing from your head isn’t something we are born with. It’s one of the later drawing skills that develop. Just keep showing up everyday and trying. That’s all you can control!

    • @oluwajobaomopariola7257
      @oluwajobaomopariola7257 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Haha! I can relate as well. Although I’ve tried to study some art techniques in the past, it felt too ‘measured’ for me as a kid, so I stuck to my style of drawing.
      I’ve only recently started learning all these art techniques and they make the drawing process so much simpler, faster, fun and accurate, now I just want to give younger me a hard knock on the head for not edu-ma-cating myself 😂

    Excellent! One question about the "temple slices": do they have to be tilted "inward" along the Z axis ? I'd estimate those are about 10°-15°, did Loomis do that too ?

    • @AlfieBerger
      @AlfieBerger  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I just do it because the head wedges towards the front and towards the jaw. Having parallel lines also kills the flow and energy. So it’s good practice to point things in one direction and always have a slight wedge shape.

    i have a question for you: why do you need to draw the sphere with side to side arcs?
    is there a didactit reason to it? I trained myself to draw circles in a single stroke and it actually feels smoother once i could do it since I only need to align the head and the tail of the single stroke istead of doing it for 2+ strokes...
    thanks nevertheless, your video is really helpful❤

    • @AlfieBerger
      @AlfieBerger  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yeah it just trains you to draw arcs both ways. I’m doing a full circle but just touching down only on one side. It’s passed down from Disney animators. More of a constructive/animation/storyboard way to draw. Nothing is set in stone take and leave whatever does or doesn’t work for you. I just personally find the way animators and board artists draw to be the most loose quick and expressive way you can draw because they go through around 700-100 panels a day some times so you really have develop develop the most efficient short hand. And the arcs on both sides is more on encapsulation the form than laying down a perfect circle. Often they start to draw looser and more sketchier as they progress on focus less on precision and more on feeling emotion and story. So it also plays into the C S I shape design principles of drawing every line as a c s or I shape. Thanks for the comment!

    why is it called an ellipses when it's just a smaller circle?

    • @AlfieBerger
      @AlfieBerger  หลายเดือนก่อน

      The term "ellipse" refers to a specific type of shape in geometry. While an ellipse might look like a "smaller circle" when viewed from certain perspectives, it is actually a distinct shape with unique properties.
      An ellipse is defined as the set of all points for which the sum of the distances to two fixed points (called the foci) is constant. This definition differentiates it from a circle, which has only one center point and is defined as the set of all points that are equidistant from this center point.
      In summary, an ellipse is not simply a smaller circle; it is a shape that has different mathematical properties and definitions.

      A circle is an ellipse for which the lengths of the two axes coincide (or, equivalently, the two foci occupy exactly the same position). But that's not the point here. The point is that you're viewing the circle from an angle (except for profile view), which turns it into a proper ellipse.

      Andrew Loomis (1892-1959) was an American illustrator and author known for the ‘Loomis Method’ for drawing heads, simplifying them into geometric shapes for easy learning.

    No one needs to worry about a head looking perfect since we are not symmetrical anyway :D so your drawings don’t need to be, either. Have fun 👋

      What do you mean? That there is no need to learn construction? we are pretty symmetrical not like our eyes and mouths are in random places. It’s pretty predictable measurements that fit most humans in the world.

      Yeah I thought it added some entertainment value. At first it was out of necessity due to living circumstances. But now that’s its growing I was thinking I should use my own voice. I’ve recorded one video now with my own voice but it didn’t seem to make the video any better… I would love to send it your way and get your thoughts. Thank you for the comment!

      @@AlfieBerger a real human voice adds connection to the audience, an ai voice create distance to them
