We need an "Analyze" button! To look for invalid data such as a mother or father that the dates don't match (too old, too young, etc)

You mean within a specific tree? I use Family Tree Maker for this - I think Ancestry has partnered for these tools so that they can focus on other areas. There's another option that also synchronizes with Ancestry but I forget the name of it right now.

As I mentioned in the Live Chat, even "Location" isn't always solid. You have to know your history as well.
I have ancestors that lived in Bethel County Maine. However: (a) Maine was formed from Massachusetts in 1805, (b) Bethel County was formed in 1820 from parts of York and Cumberland. So, depending on the timeframe, my search location has to change at the county _and_ state level.
So, word of advice to researchers: don't always expect results from an exact location search. Learn the history for the areas you search in and spread the love with a little search imprecision. That's _especially_ important for areas that were undergoing rapid development ... like the early American states in the few decades right after nationhood, or the western states during the westward expansion phase.

It would be great if you would do a information lesson on finding lost relatives for people who were adopted or finding a paternal ancestor who’s name is unknown. I’ve helped 6 peoples find their lost ancestor, it takes a lot of work but sometimes it came be done, especially now with the dna added!

Christa I have a question...I love the new parent 1 and parent 2 feature. I have aassigned colors for Maternal unassugned and paternal unassigned. MY question is this. I grew up in a large city, so there isn't a lot of intermarriage. Occasionally, I come across one assigned maternal and find I had marked them paternal. So, MY QUESTION IS_ How RELIABLE is this new assigned category? Is it possible I made a mistake or should I investigate further for a match on both sides? I am 100% European on both sides

You know what would be helpful when you come workers, a live diagram showing how to go about what is explained!! It's nice to, but great to see with your eyes!! I'm sure that I'm speaking for many! I've been a paying customer for 3 years and still can't figure out, where when and what ever!! We need demonstrations! That shouldn't be too much to ask!! I've gone through the census search only to find mixed up names to a zillion in the same area, etc.! Also, not comparing, but can we not put a few names like parents and grandparents etc. , into your system and it'll make a tree for you like My Heritage! I just heard that can be done, and you guys are way more advanced than they are!! Probably won't hear back, but just letting you know how some feel, thanks! 😒

I've found that when I look at a branch of my tree that I haven't looked at for a while that then I will get hints on the people in that branch. I am kind of OCD about my hints and clear them about once a month. I look at and attach hints for those in my direct line (and sometimes their children), but usually ignore hints for collateral lines. The hints are still there (in ignored hints), so if I want to look at them later, I can.

Are there plans to bring the same filters used in the databases to our own trees? For example, I may want to find all the people in my tree who lived in a particular location. Or I might look for those who were born outside the United States but died here (those who immigrated).

Thanks so much for watching, Michel! We're grateful to you for choosing Ancestry to assist you in your research, and we appreciate you taking the time to share your feedback with us. While we don't automatically offer a way to search through your tree by location, we have a feature that can help you achieve this moving forward. This would be the Tree Tags feature. You can create your own customs tags, so you can search through your tree with greater ease. We'll link more information about this feature below in case you'd like to learn more.

I found it to be too limiting sometimes when searching from my tree, for example, i was searching one of my great grandfathers whom i had a lot of information on, including siblings, all the dates, locations ect, but I could not get any search results on his parents. I knew his parents were born in ireleand and a rough date, but i kept getting zero hits, with all the information presented.
After i removed all of the extra information, dates, siblings wife, ect, I was actually able to finally get a hit, sometimes less can be more, overall I have some fantastic results. I've been up plenty of dead ends, and have found a few interesting characters as well.

I had a similar thing occur. When adding a name to your tree, there is the option on the left hand side to opt/choose people you already have in your family tree. That way it just adds the same ancestors you already have.
I had an ancestor who married sisters, I am descended from both sisters. 😉

      Hey Sandy,
The results about your heritage as far as geographic etc are estimates and it slightly changes as more people upload their data. If you just got your data back I’m assuming you have your DNA results and the most probable history based on all the data collected to date. The real personal data is really found by YOU if you so choose to build a tree. I have been doing it for about a year and it is fascinating. I would start by creating your tree and “linking” it to your DNA profile. Even if you just start by entering your parents and grandparents that’s a good start. You will find other relatives who may have well developed trees already and you can use their info to get started. Then as you confirm your ancestors that you add to your tree are actually yours (conform by looking at census records, birth, death, marriage, etc) before you know you will be back many generations. I’m into the 1600s so far and have found birth records from England, Scotland and many from a very small village in Northern Italy. So just remember that the report generated is very general and to get more specific and accurate you need to build a tree of your own and spend a little time every week going backward and finding how far you can go!

    • @CristaCowan
      @CristaCowan ปีที่แล้ว +4

The Ethnicity Estimate shows you where in the world your DNA was 500-1000 years ago. The Genetic Communities show you where your family has lived within the last 100-200 years. Your DNA Matches connect you to common ancestors back to about 7th great-grandparents - which, depending on how the generations in your family fall out can be several hundred years. Based on how DNA splits and recombines, that is about as far back as it goes.

See if you can find an ancestor in the Dawes rolls. The reason why the tribes don’t accept DNA is because there are so many mestizos from Latin America that are also Indian, but not from North American tribes. The algorithms used for the tests don’t have enough conclusive information to determine from what particular tribe in North America one may hail, which is why the paper trail is necessary.
