Thanks for sharing this man. This has inspired me to get my first cichlid this weekend and I am so excited. Watching your channel has given me enough helpful information / advice on taking care of one and I think I'm ready. Keep up the good content!
Damn good tip on adding the prime to the bag if you open it. Also, if you get some 3ml syringes with blunt tip 16ga needles it makes dosing faster and more accurate.
Like this 1 as well. Which A cichlid are the new onces ! Mbuna, peacocks or Haps. Also what you have in your tank out of these 3. Sorry to ask so many questions- work in progress to research. Tank, substrate, light, decoration all planned. Ony thing left is which which one to choose Mbuna, haps or peacock. Which one to have as I love the colours ? 1 vedio which would help starters like me is a list & names of fish to go for in particular group as they so many of this unlike goldfish which r hand full colourful breed. Thanks Kev 👍

Thanks...on the main I do about 80% water changes weekly. But I can do it because I’ve tested my fish stress levels at 50-60-70-and 80%. I know they handle it just fine. Also the water I’m adding in is as identical in parameters as can be to the water I remove. (Minus the Nitrates) As far as quarantine goes I try to leave them for 2 weeks but since I know I’m getting them from a great source I usually do about 1 week.
Technically they should be in quarantine for like a month, but I know thats tough, so I say 2 weeks min. I dont usually automatically add meds, but if you wanted to just go with general cure and ich x. Those are pretty safe and will kill any potential parasites. Check'm out here - General Cure - amzn.to/34pXtb0 Ich x - amzn.to/2TjuuiB
hey Kev this might be a stupid question but here it goes lol. Im transferring my salt water fish from their 20 gallon tank to the new 60 gallon tank . both tanks are at the same temperature. do I still have to acclimate them or can I just put them in directly ? Thanks Kev
I would use at least 50% of the old water just to ensure there arent any big swings in other parameters like PH, hardness, and Nitrate... Then you won't need to acclimate. 😊
Hey kave, do u recommend any general medicine for quarantining the new fish b4 adding it to our tank..? BTW., I must say its a gr8 stuff & info frm ur channel.. especially those colorful guyz r luvly.. gud luk brother!!
We all have our own way of doing fish acclimation ive only hung my bags for 15 to 20 minutes then i dumped the bag water down the sink with the fish being put in my net then i bring them over to my tank. I've never had any problems and I've been in the African chiclid hobby for 45 years not criticizing you just saying how i have done it. Peace. By the way i do quarantine my new fish in my 75 gallon like yours then they go to my 150. I wanted to go eith a 220 like your new one but i didn't trust the weight. But i fo have 4 tanks and I'm in the process of setting up a aquascape tank check them out someone like you would love that niche. Later.
@@KaveManAquatics no no don't make it the last one.. I love them I'm sure we all do. I was just scratching my head thinking I was going nuts lol all good man keep it up
My Mbunas are arriving Tuesday and the aquarium is all set and running awaiting their arrival but I don't have a quarantined tank....so using your techniques with stress guard and prime, should i pour the bagged fish water along with the fish directly into the tank or just the fish?
No you don’t ever want to add the bag water, it’s full of waste. Net the fish out of the bag and put them in your tank. If they are your first fish don’t worry about a quarantine, just don’t add new fish to your main tank of fish without quarantine.
I am setting up a quarantine tank using a 4 gallon plastic bin. Do you think I need a heater and if so can you recommend one that won’t boil my fish or burn a hole in the plastic . Thx
If your room temperature will fall below what your fish require then yes you'll need a heater. Most heaters wont burn plastic or boil your fish...try this one - amzn.to/3oYQ8GS
I would suggest not ordering fish in the winter. I placed my order and watched the tracking of delivery across country - I live in Virginia - and even though the box clearly stated 'Live Fish' the UPS driver left it on my outside table. Fortunately, I went outside and saw it! I ran them in, opened the box and there was only a small packet which I'm assuming was the heating element. The box didn't look anything like the one Kev unpacked. The bag water was in the mid 70s and I thought one fish was dead (he was upside down). I floated the bags but took the sick fish and opened the bag so he could get some air. I put him in the quarantine tank and he's doing fine. I'm going to order from a different company next time and in warmer weather. Thanks for letting me vent!!
Where did you order from? Shippers vary greatly...But you also have to keep in mind that sometimes the carriers have delays and the shippers have no control over that. I've had bad experiences as well, but more good than bad.

KaveMan Aquatics ok awesome and yeah I do 25% but starting to go up to 50% just ducks my tap water has nitrates in it already:/
Leo Contreras Yea that’s tough to deal with. If it’s too high you might want to look into RO Water...but that’s kind of a hassle...good luck!

I use the cap of the Prime to measure and add to water. It's to easy to over do it straight from the bottle.
A capful of prime for the bag is way too much, I was trying to add much less. A viewer gave me a great tip to use a syringe.
@@KaveManAquatics not the whole capful...lol. Just pour some into the cap. If you pour to much you can put it back before you overdose a tank or bag.
