This was the standard meet & greet press conference they have with the performers during media week leading up to The Super Bowl...However, the performers usually don't put on a mini-concert, they do a question-and-answer thing -- That's why Prince jokingly acted like he was gonna take questions
One of my favourite TV performances, cause it meant nothing to nobody and yet Prince gives those 10minutes his all. Never will it be seen again except by fans, but he doesn't hold back. He's not doing this to sell music, he did it because he was music.
I feel like he never gets enough credit for being funny as hell. Watch some of his music videos and how much he hams it up (especially the Batman videos, god they’re so ludicrous and over the top), but that moment when he smirks and hits the opening chord when the guy asks the first question is just poetry 😂
One of my favourite performances because it is a perfect situation of him giving zero F's. It's meant to be a press conference with boring questions from the media. And he knows it is being televised... So what does he do, play a set as great as the main show itself. The way the press stay seated is criminal. And I'd love to see the footage from some of those old flip phones! 👀 For a few years around this sort of time, he was the master of the 10 minute mini concert. NAACP, Brits, ALMA awards... All pure fire. And the way he could just flip into latin playing, rock, funk, whatever... Yep, he's got to certainly be the most versatile. I still laugh when he goads the press into their first question and fires up the band regardless... And I've seen that clip dozens of times. What a character.
I know others have likely hit all these points, but.... This was during "Media Week" leading up to the 2006 Super Bowl (2006 season, played in Feb. 2007). The half time performer always does a press conference to answer questions. Most use the Super Bowl Halftime Show and Press Conference to promote their latest release and current tour... and play some hits. Prince did this performance as his press conference. Neither the halftime nor the press conference pushed any current release, and he did lots of songs by other artists in both performances. The people in the chairs were journalists there for the press conference. They all stuck to their journalistic integrity, thus didn't "get up out their seats." It reminds me how just two years later one journalist covering the game was the father of the Arizona Cardinals' future hall of fame wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald, who was a star that day. When his son scored what was thought would be the winning touchdown late in the game, his father just sat in his chair doing his job... because there is "no cheering in the press box." I had great respect for him for that. It informs one about the press sitting throughout this performance. (That's spoken as a Steelers fan - who beat the Cardinals that day. Larry Fitzgerald was and is a star. ) The Cubano influence in the music was a nod to the game and press conference being in Miami. I feel for the horn section. They were supposed to play the halftime show with Prince, but the day of the game he decided no horns. I don't know if it was due to the rain or not. (The rain... which when he was asked if he was OK before the game because it was a real downpour, Prince famously replied, "can you make it rain harder?") One last note: that orange suit. Anyone else trying to wear that would be ridiculed. But Prince... yeah, he looks good. It's just typical Prince being a fashion icon. Lol
I remember silly casuals who thought he'd been inactive since Purple Rain and believed he'd bomb lol.He was lumped in with older performers who had turned the halftime show into a bore. Many in that audience had no current frame of reference for him and had no idea what they were looking at.
It’s incredible to see that, even after death prince is still gaining new admirers. You need to do a reaction video of his live performance of joy In repetition. The guitar solo is off the chain in that one
Love your channel. Life long prince fan from the very beginning. I'm really enjoying your reaction videos to prince especially. Like I said I go all the way back to the beginning of his career. For you, soft and wet. Seen the 1999 tour, purple rain tour and many others. Greatest live performer I've seen period. With seeing so many great live performances from him over the years. I've always known just how great of a musician he truly was. Unfortunately with his passing a tremendous amount of live performances are now on you tube. Something he wouldn't allow when he was alive. The bright side of that is his brilliance is now being introduced to a whole new audience. It warms my heart to see you and others discover his sheer brilliance with so many instruments and overall musicianship. I've heard people say similar things to what your thoughts were of him back in the day. I would always say the most underrated musician in the world. only to have people who weren't prince fans laugh at me. Because they saw him as a Manufactured pop star. The last song of the set, Get On The Boat (from the 3121 album) is just one of the many songs were Prince makes reference to or quotes a specific bible story or verse. Get On The Boat makes reference to the Noah's Ark story. As is the case with much of Prince's music there is a duality to this song. To his spiritual side the boat referred to in this song is a metaphorical ark of salvation. Then to his humanity side he invites us to join him on his party boat "You can let your hair down let the music move your feet" "We got room for a hundred more." Indeed there is. thanks for another interesting video reaction and sharing your professional insights.
@@YesYouCANPlayGuitar like you mentioned, he wsa confident enuff to ease into any band scenario -- check out his appearance at the Webby Awards where he just casually picked up a guitar & did a quick acoustic jam
With Prince you get range. I have observed so many "best of" musicans for guitar and Prince just has a range that is rare. Taking nothing away from the other greats (EVH, Hendrix, Santana, King, Clapton, and so, so many others) who deserve to be toward the top, but range and as you are teaching us, adapting to different set-ups, bands, and event themes are just amazing. The crazy thing is that we are still just scratching the surface on this journey we are taking with you.
I have come to realize recently that unlike other artists or bands whom you can learn everything about rather quickly, learning about Prince truly is a life study. Amazing post as always I love reading them :)
The crowd was reserved because they were at work.. you had some bopping their heads but the applause let's you know they received him well.. a room full of reporters and photographers ready to get an interview or statement but instead they got a performance 😂 Prince was strictly about the music
Prince always said he’d play the same whether there was 10 or 10,000 in the crowd. He was shy at first on stage. One of the early people said they had to get him to turn around to the audience because he had his back to them and looked at the band. I believe this was before he got signed with WB.
I am a MAJOR Prince fan and this is my favorite live video that he ever did. Incredible. Just covering Johnny B. Goode... Anotherloverholenyohead, closing with Get On The Boat. The people were just sitting there (unlike any Prince live show I've ever seen) and he SLAYED them. But I'll tell ya... although he is legendary on guitar, if you want to see me get excited.... just watch him pick up the bass guitar. I'm like "Oh yeah... we are about to get funky." Watch him play the bass in "Pass the Peas" (with Maceo Parker) in Paris around 2011. As soon as he picks up the bass, I get excited. "Oooohhh.... get funky!" I love how he played everything. For the first time I noticed that Morris Hayes was not on keys for this performance. Both he and Renato Neto were on keys for the Super Bowl. The horn section you see here unfortunately got cancelled the morning of the Super Bowl. I’m not sure if it was weather related or not.

I have a recommendation for you, just in case you need more 😂...check out Prince's performance of Purple House (cover of Jimi's Red House) from the Rave Un2 the Year 2000 concert film. I've seen quite a few of your videos in the last couple days, but I haven't seen that one yet..and it's one of my favorite guitar performances of his. This is hilarious. Those reporters sit like statues while one of the greatest performers ever does a show just for them. And, they have no reaction. Millions of people would have paid any amount to have a private concert like that. Unbelievable.

Then you are on the boat. Try Push and Pull with him and Nikka Costa; he makes her song his.
What about iron maiden 100 million albums not in the r&r hof. But the prince halftime show was fantastic.
I've heard about that controversy for sure my man. What is your favourite Iron Maiden performance?
I have a recommendation for you, just in case you need more 😂...check out Prince's performance of Purple House (cover of Jimi's Red House) from the Rave Un2 the Year 2000 concert film. I've seen quite a few of your videos in the last couple days, but I haven't seen that one yet..and it's one of my favorite guitar performances of his. And it doesn't hurt to have Maceo Parker in the mix too. I'm a sax player, so that's where my loyalties lie. 😬🙃
Hey Sam! I've had a number of my Prince reaction videos blocked, which are up on Patreon for my Patreons to view. That one is there. :)
@@YesYouCANPlayGuitar Fantastic! I’ll have to check it out. Thanks! I’m learning a lot from your reaction videos.
Pathetic media devils right there ! Prince is great as always and they don’t get it 😢
This is hilarious. Those reporters sit like statues while one of the greatest performers ever does a show just for them. And, they have no reaction. Millions of people would have paid any amount to have a private concert like that. Unbelievable.
Band members said that Prince said you play the same whether its for 10 or 10,000.
Also - notice how those stiffs didn't stand up, even after he told them to.
He's the last to go up and the first to leave lol
"Contrary to rumor I'd like to take a few questions"
"Prince how do feel about performing...🎸🎶🎶🎸🎤1 2 1 2 3 😂🎼🎵🎶🎹
Hello my northern friend,
I wanted to tell you that you never have to apologize when you pause the videos, if people want to watch the music video they can do so on their own. We come here to get your reaction thus reaction video. You have unique perspective with your knowledge of guitar instruments and stage set-ups and so forth. So pause, rewind, talk during do your little faces and your little video effects at will. Just saying.
Oh yeah back to Prince, that was a presser or I guess a precurser tease. I know people in the audience were dead wood but you have to ask yourself "Would you get up and dance for Prince?" Lol just saying. Great video thanks!
Thank you so much my friend :)
Zombie audiences. Press. But as always. Wonderful arrangement
It must be me but I can't stand the constant feedback beep in this clip. Still cool though.
The soundman eventually eliminated it I think...
