The ability to move the arm separate from the machine let's you dig parallel to buildings and obstacles. You can work off the side of your tracks and angle your arm parallel to the building and it lets you get really close. So the width of your machine isn't a factor.

    • @cabwaldo

A tractor is a multi tool- it does a lot of things but not very many very well. Especially digging. This machine coupled with a skid steer (purpose built loader for digging) would blow the tractor out of the water. But you’d certainly pay for it if buying all new.
Tractors are much better suited for 3pt field implements. For example, you wouldn’t put hay equipment on a skid steer- that would be a waste of time even though you probably could

I got an excavator for the same reasons as Wranglestar about four months ago (I've put 220 hours on it). They are an amazing tool. Having had tractors, skids steers and the like I have to say, the excavator (with a thumb) would likely be the last thing I let go. Move dirt, dig holes, move logs, lift 2000 lb forklift batteries, lift the canopy off the pickup, lift the sawmill head onto the rails...seems like every day I'm turning to it to do stuff that would otherwise be very challenging or time consuming to complete.

I am a pipelayer by trade. The swivel boom is intended for for trenching and leveling in confined spaces and it is really easy to dig a trench straight with the swivel boom as where it sits at the cab is where the trench will come to. I have a mini and find that articulating pivot point at the housing is useful for digging right up along a wall. Nudge up to the wall, swing the boom over parallel to it and you can dig as close as you need to and still rotate the body to dump well out of the way. I’m also eyeing up a dump trailer to compliment the mini, but at 6 tons it is more a midi and the dump trailer options get limited.

Just a tip from past experiences and you probably know, but it helps a lot if you make up some retractable legs on the back end of the dump trailer.. takes the risk out of the chance if you happen to leave the ball unlocked/wrong ball ect or if the mechanism fails...

I don't know if its worth even mentioning, but I always appreciate your candor on topics that most people are so brazen about.
I have been watching your videos for probably 10 years now, found your stuff in college when I was losing my mind yearning to spend some time outdoors and the axe videos and tree felling had a ton of appeal for how authentic it felt.
I'll readily admit I know we wouldn't agree on many topics of politics and religion, but even though your content has slowly changed and evolved, your ability to be true to yourself in a respectable manner has remained.
There is not a single other youtuber who's content I can enjoy who I also know is experiencing the world from a totally different perspective.
Keep it up and I'll happily watch for another 10 years

they are incredably useful machines with lots of bucket/blade swapouts. lots of high volume contractors around here have at least one in the inventory for tight spaces they are that flexable .If you ever get some sparetime grab some 3/4"ply scrap, sprayglue and some tinfoil and fashion a wind up key to mount on the back engine hatch,

So many things to unpack in this video. As someone who's in academia now I'm always torn about real work vs. the work I do now. If things go sideways, which it looks like they will, I don't currently have a Plan B. We've got supplies and as much on that end as we can, but income is something else altogether. I need to spend some serious time working on those secondary sources of income in case I have to leave my current position in the insane asylum.

Hey Cody its coming up on a year since you moved to the new Homestead, the reason I mention is I also moved into a new home around the same time me being on the First of September. Are there things you miss about the old Homestead and the old shop? What are some of the things that you have now that you didn't before and what are your whole thoughts about the future? For me granted I am only renting-I can't believe how fast the time has flown by and I also am looking forward for the first time in a long time where I have been looking down for as long as I can remember. Thanks!

I’m 64 years old and seeing my savings take a big hit because of the Biden administration. So I pretty much have done what you’ve done like purchasing a 14K 14’ dump trailer, a Ditch Witch SK1050 stand on mini skid steer and a Cat 302.7 and of course not all at once. So now I’m able to do everything I need to do around my property without calling anyone and looking to purchase some land in the country to develop and move onto. Most importantly is to keep God first in our lives, he is our personal savior and provider.

That’s a fine Japanese built mini ex!
For the price we chose an Orange instead of a lemon.
This combined with the yanmar, two people can make a lot work look easy!

If you are thinking of getting a dump trailer look for a goose neck it you truck has a 5th wheel hitch, have talked to many people that have had both and they say that a goose necks are 10xs better then the pull behinds. The pull behind us going to put a lot more wear and tear on the truck.
