This is exactly what I’ve been searching for! Thank you for creating this video! I’ve been researching how to record a project live without a metronome and then deal with the tempo and syncing later via Melodyne. This video answers all of those questions. Well done!
Let's suppose that I have a file with only guitar and voice. I do the same thing to calcute the tempo variations and after that, I want to put some percussion in other track (a loop file with regular tempo). I didn't happen to me, the percussion loop was out of sync. What was I doing wrong? Thanks!
Hi Craig. I've tried this very cool feature on a recording I did with no click track with my daughter and can't seem to get this to work. Every time I drag a clip to the timeline I get a "no parking" sign on the mouse pointer telling me I can't do this. I do have the very latest update of Sonar Platinum and really can't wait to get this working on my recorded material. Can you help? Txs!
Whoever 'saw-the-flaw' in this presentation deserves credit. NO, this does NOT work in Sonar X3; you MUST have the upgrade to 'Platinum,' etc.. Too bad, too... I really need the feature, but the 'kitty' just can't come up with the cash for now! Any other suggestions for creating an automated tempo map? Audiosnap is useless at this as well... It would appear that most of these timing features are at best, quirky and MAYBE *partially* functional. Cakewalk product user for a good 15 years; professional audio and studio engineer...
I couldn't get this to work. I dragged in an MP3 demo and created the detailed tempo map from it as shown, but it doesn't play back with a MIDI drum track which is (presumably?) following the new tempo map. The drum track is precisely in sync with the metronome if I turn it on, but the MP3 track isn't.
After the first example audio file is dragged to the timeline it syncs with the metronome but the tempo indicator on the transport bar never wavers from 125 bpm on playback. The tempo map created when viewed has many changes from this value but these are not reflected on playback?
i have a question i just got sonar professional i was recording everything was fine then out of the blue my verses do not match up with the beat i few sconds off but everytime i record its like this can some one please help you
Tried it with a single recorded bass track. The song is "Feelin alright" and is a recorded bass track by Carol Kaye. It was done without a click track but with a steady feel. However I dragged it into the timeline in Sonar and it maps the tempo good for about 8 mesures then craps out on the tempo for the rest of the song. I don't get it. Every time DAW's come out with features like this it seems to work for the demonstration but I NEVER get it to work. Any suggestions how to map this tempo so I can add drum tracks and my own guitar tracks to it?
+CakewalkSoftware OK, do I need to start a thread in the Cakewalk support or just get the e-mail address, from cakewalk.com, explain in an e-mail and include the .BUN file. The bass track is audio so a plain .CWP file wouldn't contain the audio.
Make sure Melodyne is using the Percussive algorithm and not the Melody or Universal algorithm. Even though you're not creating a region effect per se, you're still using the Melodyne engine.
+Craig Anderton Hi Craig, just like +Michael Parson-Mcnamara asked, I'd also like to know how/where to edit the algorithm type when dragging an audio file into the tempo track. I'd say Sonar already knows that you'll want a rhythmic analysis when dragging it into the tempo track, to be honest. But perhaps you're on to something. The tempo extracted from the track I'm analyzing is off a lot too, in any case.
I am using Sonar Professional and Melodyne 4 Studio. My basic trouble is that when adding Melodyne to my Sonar project, Melodyne itself does not open inside Sonar, but independently, so even when getting the audio file into Melodyne for tempo grabbing, I did not find out yet how to apply that tempo thing to Sonar to get additional MIDi instruments synced to that audio. Anyone please have a hint? Thankx.
What if I want to do the reverse? Change the tempo of the audio clip to fit the project? For example, I'm using a 137bpm clip that I want to sync with the 100bpm of my project, but I don't want the time stretch effect: I just want to slow it down while keeping the original sound
I want to record a tempo map by remote control with midi controller knob. I write the midi traks first of all. All sounds mechanic. Now, I want record Dynamics while play music, by moving a knob of my midi controller. After, I play the proyect and its sounds much more human. It is possible? How?
+Eurig Gwilym This is what happens: The feature "Set Measure at Beat Now" forces SONAR to come up with a tempo for those first 2 bars. After that, the Melodyne Tempo Drag and Drop analyzes the audio file, and changes SONAR's Tempo. It doesn't affect the audio file at all.
Because the measures/beats would be off - the audio would still start at 1:1:000, and the downbeat would be at 1:3:000. I assume you could manually line up the downbeat transient with 2:1:000 first (leaving a gap before the clip starts) and then drag the whole clip, though, although it's possible Melodyne wouldn't be able to do quite as good a job at determining the tempo if it can't assume the clip starts on a downbeat.
I have been researching the same question you have and it appears you have to convert the midi clip to an audio track and then do the process outlined in this video. There is more than one way to convert midi to audio and I am still looking into the best way to do that.
Thanks That is very clear and obviously, It's very easy. So, I tried it on a tune, that I couldn't recall the original tempo (3/4) of. I'd rather stick with that original tempo, now that I've remembered it (84 bpm). Can I undo or get rid of the Melodyne Tempo Map? I can't see where it "is" to remove it or undo it.
When recording analog instruments, you can for example give the first instrument you're recording more freedom rather than giving them a clicktrack to play to. You can then use their recording as the basis for your project's tempo. Naturally when you're using synths, samples and VST's this is a whole lot less interesting for you.
Got it now, and folks, this works also in Cakewalk Sonar by Bandlab! Big up!

This will save me so much time, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Nice, I'm curious to try that with a vocal file ....

When I drag audio up to the top I do not get the Melodyne tempo map? Is there something I am missing? I am a SPLAT user with current updates.
Did you wait till it turns blue (the timeline bar)?
I am able to do so now. Thanks man!

upgrade to cakewalk. everything is there

Wow is this lovely light GUI still an option in bandlab? All the videos I have been seeing with ALL of the gui pitch black has been putting me off.

+Brad Hofrichter Send the project file to our tech support team. See if they can dissect what's going on. We have a close relationship with Celemony.

OK I didn't see an option to preselect that, so how do you select percussive before you drag it up to the timeline?
+Craig Anderton Hi Craig, just like +Michael Parson-Mcnamara asked, I'd also like to know how/where to edit the algorithm type when dragging an audio file into the tempo track.

Very didactic and very helpful. Very thankful.
What exactly happens to the opening section after set beat to measure 2? Is the audio stretched across the first bar?
+Eurig Gwilym This is what happens: The feature "Set Measure at Beat Now" forces SONAR to come up with a tempo for those first 2 bars. After that, the Melodyne Tempo Drag and Drop analyzes the audio file, and changes SONAR's Tempo. It doesn't affect the audio file at all.
then why split it up at all? why not just drag the entire audio clip up to the top and let tempo mapping do its thing?
Because the measures/beats would be off - the audio would still start at 1:1:000, and the downbeat would be at 1:3:000. I assume you could manually line up the downbeat transient with 2:1:000 first (leaving a gap before the clip starts) and then drag the whole clip, though, although it's possible Melodyne wouldn't be able to do quite as good a job at determining the tempo if it can't assume the clip starts on a downbeat.
Sure, but how do I effectively create tempo maps for a MIDI clip I recorded?
Logic. LOL.
I have been researching the same question you have and it appears you have to convert the midi clip to an audio track and then do the process outlined in this video. There is more than one way to convert midi to audio and I am still looking into the best way to do that.

I got answers from Scott Garrigus on DigiFreq and the CW forum. The tempo changes created by Melodyne are easily deleted in Tempo View.
what is the use case for this if you are creating all your own music and not doing remixes?
When recording analog instruments, you can for example give the first instrument you're recording more freedom rather than giving them a clicktrack to play to. You can then use their recording as the basis for your project's tempo.

Why do I import audio , drag, not blue ?Can not drag up。I want to know why this is
+one lee I think it will still arrive.
also I tried it on my not getting
+one lee Tempo Map is available in the newest, Early Access build 71 release. Update your Command Center and check again.
+Panu Pentikäinen WELL MY SONAR VERSION HAS 21.13.03.0.32 still can not.
MAYBE I HAVE TO TOGGLE ALGUAM CONFIGURATION.
+gilvan silva Works here with build 22.0.3.71. You have older SONAR.
+Panu Pentikäinen OK OK! HERE IN BRAZIL ARRIVE THINGS A LITTLE ATRAZADAS
STILL NOT ARRIVED TO ME UPDATES!
THANK YOU
so I take it that this doesn't work with Non Platinum members?
+MTG Recording Studio It works with anyone that has Melodyne 4 installed. Professional and Platinum users get Melodyne 4.
I have sonar x3 producer and I'm using melodyne 4, still not able to move the audio file to the timeline.
MTG Recording Studio Ah I see now. Yes this feature is not available for SONAR X3. Only SONAR Artist, Professional, and Platinum.
