And attempts since to revive the comedy, and more specifically, the parody genre have failed (see "Holmes and Watson" or "Fifty Shades of Black"). I think what comedy writers nowadays don't get is that to make a comedy, you also have to take the story kind a seriously. Something like Young Frankenstein or Blazing Saddles had a surprising amount of heart in it and could be seen as straight movies too. And as Noctaru mentioned, meme-culture and the many sketch comedy channels on TH-cam, who all do pretty good parodies, might have also changed the sensibilities of the market. Not to mention that many blockbuster films often include comedy (or the attempt thereof). I think making a comedy requires a lot of effort and restraint, the art of doing it right became lost and nobody wants to put in the effort to rediscover it nowadays.

Also compounded by Leslie Neilsen making a big deal about how he stunned him, so he could stop him in a non-lethal way. I know I didn't need to explain all this to you because you've seen the movies, but I wanted to explain to anyone reading these comments who hasn't seen them. The people who made this video did a great job of blending the two movies.

The best comedians were also really good serious actors. You can find really amazing performances from the best comedians, from Jim Carrey to Robin Williams. Making people laugh it's much harder than making them cry. That shows what an actor Leslie was, understanding that you can be extremely funny while being serious, it's all about context.
His dry performance makes his comedies so good. The fact that he can stay serious makes it work so well. The fact that he is a serious actor only proves how well he can keep a straight face.
