  • Nowadays, pedalboards are getting smaller and more powerful! In this week's episode, I’m building a rig for my good friend Joe. Using power-house gear like the RJM PCB6X and the Eventide H9 to name a few, we're aiming for maximum tone per square inch!
    I’ll walk you through the rig building process, sharing tips and tricks to make your pedalboards as bullet proof as possible!

    Very nicely done Mason! Lots of really useful nuggets (e.g. use high quality audio cables; trim audio and DC power cables together; hadn't previously considered this simple truth; after initial current in rush, no induced noise in audio cables); and make one end of audio cable first cut other end to perfect length. The later is highly useful ... cant tell you the number of times I tried (and failed) to estimate correctly them played musical cables to reuse mistakes. Thanks again, keepem coming.

    God, seeing all these cables and power lines put together so neatly is extremely satisfying. I love the organization, I feel like the process of building one of these board would be very therapeutic in a way. Solving all the issues that may arise, making every thing completely custom-length, keeping all the chords together in order, arranging the pedals and switcher, making everything look nice, all that stuff. It would just be a great day project because it doesn't seem like a totally mentally-taxing thing to do (meaning that none of the individual tasks you must do to build a board are all that difficult to do, they just take time), and you end up with a perfect finished product at the end of the day.
    Love your videos man, it's always interesting to see how pro-level gear like this is put together. One of these days if I make a little money I will build my dream pedal board like this, but for now my setup of a Tube Screamer > Soul Food > OCD > Line 6 Helix HX Effects > my amps certainly does a great job. I like using the Helix so much because it's just small and easy to carry to rehearsal, and the quality and variety of the effects really are great (I'm sure they aren't as good as high-end boutique pedals, but good enough for me). Plus, I have done side-by-side comparisons of pedals on the Helix and their real-life counterparts that I personally own, i.e. Minotaur on Helix is meant to be like a Klon Centaur (the Soul Food in itself is a copy of the Centaur), or the Teemah is like a Timmy Overdrive, the Compulsive Drive is meant to be like a Fulltone OCD, etc., and each of the pedals I have tried comparing to the Helix all sound pretty damn spot on to my ears. There is a reason the Helix is so popular.
    I went with it mainly because one really nice multi fx board is a lot cheaper than having the real versions of all the pedals that I use on the Helix, and you're able to try out many different types of effects knowing that what you're hearing is a high-quality recreation of whatever pedal you're trying so that you can get an idea of how you like certain pedals, and if you would like to purchase the actual pedals themselves. This is where I am today, and I am sure one of these days I will definitely end up purchasing all the real pedals themselves and set myself up with a really high-quality board like this. But for now, I will continue fantasizing about it and living vicariously through you and your customers haha. Keep up the videos! The more, the better, even mundane things.

    Love your stuff! Getting new ideas every episode!
    Another episode I'd love to see is the difference in builds for home/studio boards, local gig/weekend warrior setups, and full tour/flight boards. What differences are in materials used, the permanence of cable runs (audio, power, and MIDI), ins/outs, pedal selection, layout, etc.
    An episode on cases would be great too! I'm building a board that's 24" x 16" x 8" with a couple tiers that's coming in around 35 lbs by itself. I'm having a hard time finding a case that can fit it and still come in under 50 lbs for flying. I'm sure others find similar problems or could use help pushing carry-on limits. :D

    • @VertexEffectsInc
      @VertexEffectsInc  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The height on your rig is going to be the main problem, typically, ours don’t go much over six or 6 1/2 inches. There’s a few different options for our pedalboards that are listed on our website that you can see. Pelican, SKB, and Gator all have options.

    Just from the thumbnail... I would personally consider that small-midsize.. to me, “mini” is something that could fit in a backpack haha
    I’m currently rocking my “mini” rig for all my quarantine rigs, signal chain is a TCE Mini Compressor> Love Pedal Amp11> HX Stomp> (str floop out) TCE Mimiq> GFI Specular Tempus (str fx loop in)> and then taking advantage of the balanced outputs for a stereo hardwired XLR out, using a DOD Mini XP for expression and JET Pedals HX Micro midi controller. All powered by a 1Spot Pro CS6, and it all zips up in my backpack! 😁

    Love this channel. You got a BIG heart.
    Every time I learn something new. What I thought was funny was when you said “way back in the early 2000s”. For me way back means “early 70s”.
    Taking the WAH, Volume and expression pedals off the main board makes a lot of sense especially if you got a MIDI looper/switcher in the board. This way you can put the board in your desk and program it. Then connect the larger pedals later.
    The Jan Ray and RYRA drive pedals are my favourite analog drives.
    One question. What if you mounted the Tchula on some rubber feet and used the underside for the parallel jack. This way it would be out of the way of the foot switches. This way the Tchula would also be raised some 10-12 mm higher and the foot switches would be easier to access and you don’t hit the Blackstone by accident.
    I have not opened this pedal but most dual foot switch analog pedals have enough space between the two foot switches to make this possible. The electronics over occupies the top half of the pedal box.
    Also the Musicom switchers are more compact than the RJM. They make one with 6 loops too.

    • @VertexEffectsInc
      @VertexEffectsInc  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If I were to have put rubber feet underneath they would’ve had to of been at least 1 inch in order to clear the jack and the plug and since Joe wasn’t using the second channel, basically using it like a COT 50, this was the simpler solution, as stated in the video. The MusicomLab equivalent is not smaller, it has less depth, but is much wider and wouldn’t allow the two pedals to the right of the RJM switcher to fit. It wouldn’t of resulted in a smaller overall board, however I think the same devices would still work just in a slightly different orientation.

    You are the best! Amazing how you fit everything and wired everything. Not to mention that you have your own pedals and pedal board, and what a pedalboard case! The only thing I didn’t like was the added input jack into a pedal. What if he wants to sell that pedal later? Lol. Nevertheless the build is still flawless.

    • @VertexEffectsInc
      @VertexEffectsInc  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It's a parallel input jack and uses a hole that was already there for the footswitch so it could always be returned to stock (no drilling was required) and the footswitch still has it's original socket and momentary switch. Remember the owner requested this, I didn't just do it on my own.

    Mason,
    Hi my name is Patrick Kem.
    I am accumulating set amount of pedals until I take that first leap.
    I got about 3 more pedals to go before I can start looking a the power supply
    Then buffers then a great midi switcher by then I am pretty sure I will want it wireless just
    Because I don’t like clutter to keep from tripping over. But after that I will be ready to start looking at the board
    Velcro,fasteners. And I put options. I am rambling on guess it’s just the nerves talking. But also pretty stoked.
    Right now I am using a Carvin TS 100mono bloc going through a positive grid rack pro. Am planning on acquiring an EVH head
    Hopefully that will give me stereo options. Look forward to future purchases with your company and sweetwater.
    Cheers/and regards!

    That was as compact and organized as it gets. Only thing id add would be maybe some longer screws for the hinge screws and put Nylon lock nuts on the end to make certain they stay put. And maybe some knurled thumb screws in the front to hold the lid down and make it easy to get in there to adjust things if needed. As far as the cabling and all, there is no better than that. And its hard to believe it fits in that case. Them jacks out the side was a killer extra that makes it all that much better and easier to use and setup too. This is how I like to do things as well but sourcing things to make things come together can be quite a pain most times. I know your frustration at times man, its all worth it in the end though when it all comes together.

    • @VertexEffectsInc

      The MKII version how are all magnetic in the front, no set screws. The hinge screws are custom made, never had an issue with them coming out on any rig the last 2 years.

      I would advise using an isolated power supply in almost any bored situation. Typically the only types of devices they can share power without consequence or analog overdrive, distortion, boost, WAH, things of that nature. Digital effects typically do not do well sharing with analog devices with the non-isolated power supply.

    Thank you so much for these videos! Do you have any advice for consolidating running a power amp on your pedalboard? I am currently planning a more portable rig with an HX Stomp (Powered by a Truetone CS12) and a Seymour Duncan Powerstage so that I can have the choice of running straight to FOH, or running to a backline cab, or both. I am hoping to only run 1 power cable from my board to the wall.
    Is it advisable to split power to the CS12 and Powerstage using an IEC Y cable, or would it be better to switch to a power supply with a courtesy jack like the Pedal Power 2 Plus? Thanks in advance, any advice would be appreciated!

    • @VertexEffectsInc
      @VertexEffectsInc  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Alex, I'd say get a pedalboard like our Vertex ones so you can fit the Duncan Power Amp under a riser that hinges and then build your pedals around that. I think it would be the most space efficient way to do it.

    Hey Mason! I have some pedals with TRS stereo inputs and would like to make my own adapters. Do you have any recommendations for what roll of cable to buy (like Mogami 2319 but with 3 conductors)? I didn't see anything obvious when I looked into it online. Thanks!

    • @VertexEffectsInc
      @VertexEffectsInc  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Typically you need to feed those with a stereo pedal, so you will need to make an insert cable that converts two TS cables to a TRS stereo cable. The cable I use typically is the 2314, and make two regular guitar cables for the stereo device that is feeding your TRS input device, and then combine the shields and dedicate one center conductor to the Ring and one to the Tip on the TRS end.
