A small Faces fan here but fair play this is a great cover....a genuine tribute sung with affection for the originals and a nod to their influence I think.
This is a great tribute by Paul Weller. The Small Faces were a great band, but Paul Weller is also a great artist. What he done in The Jam and also some of his solo work is brilliant.
I can't believe anyone is slaggin this performance or the song or the bands! in my opinion this is one of the best songs by one of the best bands this country has produced covered by one of the best singer song writers this country has produced.
It's Weller covering a small faces song. Aren't we allowed to compare covers to the originals anymore? Seems natural to do that to me. Sure we can enjoy both, but what's wrong with enjoying one more than the other? Having said all that I haven't come across an actual live version of the small faces doing this song on TH-cam. I'm pretty sure they're miming on all the "live" videos I've seen.
Being of the 2nd generation Mod/Ska/2-Tone era... alas I wasn't born when the Small Faces were doing their thing. This Weller performance was and still is simply stunning and it led to me "discovering" SF's. Of course, the first time I played the original, I was absolutely blown away. I couldn't envisage that it could possibly be any more exciting than this version but as we all know SF's recording of this song is about as good as music can get . BRILLIANT cover of a SENSATIONAL song ! !
I don't the the average person knows just how great an artist and music historian Mr Paul Weller is. Thanks for this post. Lastly shot out to this whole band especially the man playing trumpet oh my gosh sounds like a player from the Memphis horns
Tin Soldier - the absolute pinnacle of the Small Faces' career. It combined all the soul, heart, chops, sheer TALENT of the band. That vocal of Steve's, with PP Arnold - just fantastic. The Small Faces are hardly even known in North America. We were deprived!!!!
the modfather paying tribute to the original and best mod band of the 60s !!!! what's more respectful than that people. well done Paul Weller I bow down to your taste and respect long may you continue to write sing and perform for all of us mods young and old you are our tin soldier now mate long live the modfather and God rest Steve Marriott and the small faces never forgotten always heard and well respected.
+Midge Johns Fantastic reply, and agree almost brother ...YES Mr Marriott Is the master ...But Weller is a class act also.I have followed Mr Weller for close on 40 years now....in fact he signed my knackered scooter outside the Glasgow Apollo in 1979,that's how far back I go.BUT as you say Marriott is in my mind The King,
@@neilbloggs5008 paul weller kicked off the mod revival and has carried on his style since then, nothing against Steve but Paul took the Jam all the way to thr top in the space of 5 years and carried on changing to influence more people so if you look at it in this way that's why hes the modfather, but if it wasn't for the small faces he would not be where he is today
Absolutely wonderful, I thought it was tribute band" but its the real thing in Paul Weller movement, , as it as that raw style its" meaty big and bouncy"
Smokin' Hot! Thank you Paul Weller. So glad I found this. I've been a fan of the Small Faces & Steve Marriott in particular for years. Only saw Steve once, in the original Humble Pie with Frampton at the Whiskey in Hollywood. The LP Ogden's Nut Gone Flake is a must have for any Small Faces fan. RPI Steve, you are missed.
I remember standing in the queue for the toilets when someone said Steve Marriott had died that day. Great gig when Weller really started to find his feet but everyone will remember Tin Soldier more than anything !
It might be worth considering this version of tin soldier is by Mr Paul Weller and his band. This is clearly not the Small Faces. Paul has taken the time and effort to pay tribute to one of his musical icons, after Steve Marriott had died in a house fire. Too many people wish to criticise his version, and claim they can do better. If so, post your video. The keyboard player looks like Mick Talbot from the Merton Parkers and the Style Council. Thank you Paul for a great tribute and R.I.P to a true musical genius Steve Marriott.
@@colinmcmurray552 It's hard to stomach someone/anyone "paying tribute" to ANYONE with such a bad version. Out of time, out of harmony, over- played. Please, you tribute artists, just let great songs and great performers live in peace.
Fair dos Weller, but not really mate. However Charlie, just found this cover with PP Arnold (totally on it) with a band whose front guy doesn't embarrass himself at all... search: P.P. Arnold - Tin Soldier - 229, London - October 2017
From memory I saw Weller live a couple of days after Marriott died and they played this - maybe at Nottm Trent Uni - having said that my memory could be wrong!
Cracking version. Played with passion and love as a fitting tribute to Stevie - this would have been how I discovered the Small Faces, and I'm grateful to Paul for introducing me to them and a lot of other great music through me reading interviews and his Paolo Hewitt biography. Big ups.
@innocenti67 i was at a mod do in loughborough the day stevie passed away..very sad....laid to rest on 21st birthday...didn't really feel like celebrating that day....still miss the man......great cover by paul..great tribute.
Small Faces, especially SM was such a notable influence on PW and love to c how much he loves to play this....all hail the "Modfather" ... ps was at this gig at the Academy and this clip made me feel wat too old !
A tribute to one of the greatest songs ever written and to arguably the greatest guitarist, character, songwriter, frontman, and above all vocalist in the history of popular music. IMO, no one came close to being all of these at the same time, but Steve Marriot managed it with seeming ease. Steve could blow God Almighty off of any stage.
Wow this is f------ good. seen the small faces do this so many times. This is brilliant. and they don't have pp Arnold as backing singer. Takes some doing.
The song, era & movement, all originally from my parents time but in the late 70s& 80s they were my times and my music. No matter where i go or where i am the opening chords of this song raise my mood and my body screams " I am a mod" Both versions are classics of a legendary song performed by legends of our kinship, best not to compare but to savour and appreciate what they have done for our enjoyment.Could be released today or become a festival anthem, the song has not dated one day.
i recall this tour...weller at the royal court liverpool .....thrown this in at the start....i was in marriott heaven...love this video of this concert....some standout tracks but entertainment on the pink enamel guitar............the DOGS HUGE BOLLOCKS. thats for Steve...says it all.
Wow. I really think Weller held his own with Marriot, here. Educate me, tell I'm wrong. Tin soldier is such a HUGE song, undoubtedly, but I think Paul nailed it.
He played this at Oxford the same tour absolutly awesome... and the Faces version incredible,, the best 2 version hard to split but the SF have the edge..
The guts it took to play this from a man who knew and read things about people saying he was done....via people who never picked up an instrument, or had been in a band before...but more importantly, a man who NEVER had the thought to play this tune with anyone before. What a great try. It's fun,...and a great try at it. Never kept doing this one, so even better that it's here. 1991. For some, not a memorable year. For me...a change too.
In fact Steve Marriott is the master of the vocal in this song, but maybe he took a look from the sky with a smile. Plonk and Steve must be proud to this live performance.
As a mod-fan I can accept this tribute from Paul, but Steve was and will eternally be the BEST, don"t play his songs, No one can compare with my Small Faces!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!So please don't try!
I think all the old fogues knocking Weller on here in favour of the Small Faces / Steve Marriott are completely missing the point of why he did this (and still does) - it isn't a bloody competition as to who sings it the best you idiots, he is trying to keep the British 60's MOD movement alive and has been almost single handed for 30 years. Christ IQs suffer with age. Clapton did the same for BB, Albert and Buddy Guy - it isn't a RIP its a bloody homage, and by doing this people go back and discover the original - Weller actually says this in interviews - seek out the source.
Well it was a tribute to Steve and I think he does a great job, he wasn't trying to do it like Steve, no one could, even a talent like weller. I love max Beasley on keyboard lookin like he's havin the time of his life , and the backing vocals sound great, even if one of em looks like me nanan.

Great tribute. Tin Soldier is an absolute banger and Weller did a great job! Why anyone would knock him for it I don't know.
in particular because it was a TRIBUTE
I love this,Paul Weller makes it his own and not a copy and it comes across also as a great tribute to Steve Marriot as well.
The best from the 60's and 90's. Steve would be proud of Paul. Just can't get enough of this clip!

Everyone's always fucking comparing and fucking swearing. Weller makes it his own.
@@andydixon2980 I agree, and I can’t think of anyone else who could have done it.
