I cry every time I watch this, I still believe in the power of the collective that we can upend the oppressive systems and overcome that which divided us. I live in hope still. ESPECIALLY sung unannounced behind the iron curtain on live national TV. Pete was rallying a beleaguered people, and he stepped up and got an enormous pinch hit. He was willing to say to power, "WE ARE NOT AFRAID." Twenty years later, when freedom came, people said this had given them hope and stealed their resolve.

Literally my world view changed after an introduction to his music at a concert at Western CT State University in 1968. All of a sudden words like peace, freedom, justice and compassion gained meanings that I'd never thought very deeply about. His passion and his courage will be in my consciousness for life. I regret that he is no longer with us.

Me too! Just not at Western CT State. The music of Pete Seeger, Peter Paul & Mary, Phil Ochs AND the events of 1968 from the Tet Offensive, the McCarthy campaign, the assassinations of MLK & RFK and then the Police Riot at the Democratic Convention affected my thinking for the rest of my life. No other year affected me so deeply

( Los Angeles CA )..In 1968 I was a Nurse Aide at Good Samaritan Hospital when Bobby Kennedy was brought in to ICU. History.. and now..we circle around to the need for people to sing loud for freedom, justness, compassion, and the fearlessness of speaking out. Trueness of spirit and courage of heart and common sense of mind WILL prevail. peace on..

So many young people have never heard of Pete, or his wonderful music, or his "facist-killing machine": The acoustic guitar! My favorite History teacher in HS used to bring his guitar to class, he played and sang this song in the mid-70's. I hadn't heard of Pete before that, but became a fan that day. Mr. Mitchell was Blackfoot native American (and ridiculously handsome). I had such a crush, but I also learned so much in his class. NOBODY skipped Mr. Mitchell's class!

@@killercd7682 Yes, it was Woody Guthrie who had "This machine kills fascists" on his guitar. Pete Seeger had (and here I try to remember from memory) something along the lines of "This machine surrounds hate and forces it to surrender" on his banjo at some point.

Everywhere we are seeing compassion & humility that has brought us to care for one another for we are at our most vulnerable as a human race, and we need each other to survive. Once we overcome this hopefully we'll have a better understanding of what makes us meaningful & create a better future for all of our kind.

One of those people who have made a real and lasting contribution to the human race. Truth, honesty, freedom, peace and justice cuts across all religions and political hues but, as he says, there are too many people who aren't interested in doing anything about it. The struggle goes on, Pete.

This gospel song, which became a protest song in the Civil Rights Movement is believed to be lyrical descendant of the hymn " I 'll overcome someday " by Charles Albert Tindley.
The Hindi version " हम होंगे कामयाब " was a literal translation composed by renowned poet Girija Kumar Mathur.
The Bengali adaptation " আমরা করবো জয় " was penned by Bengali folk singer Hemanga Biswas and first recorded by the late Bhupen Hazarika.

Thank you for posting this information.
I was looking for the original after hearing an alternate version that was recorded by Roy Zimmerman in Flint, Michigan, during the water crisis there. He sang a beautiful counterpoint about all the people needlessly lost due to structural injustice. I wasn’t sure if that was part of the original song or not. I guess he wrote the extra verses.

I never got to hear him in person, but grew up on his music and that of others with similar heart. I went to East Germany myself three years later and as an American, sang Christmas Carols with an East German family. I got stopped and questioned for hours by STASI when I sought to return to the West.
I also was in Germany years later in 1989 the day the Wall fell, and am mindful of the push he gave it.
