Gregorio Torretta There was none greater.I know many idolize Woody Guthrie and he was a great man as well.But Pete may have been his understudy but IMHO Pete Seeger was his equal if not surpassing him .Maybe its because we had Pete with us so much longer then Woody due to Woody developing an advanced case of Huntington's Chorea in his 40s.His death being announced many years before he actually died as was his wishes.But Pete lived longer and thankfully his mind stayed clear &sharp.I think when Pete Seeger lost his longtime, lifelong, wife&beloved soulmate the loss of his wife alittle over a year before his own passing it was due to his heart being broken and. Pete just wanted to be with her once again. I Love Woody Gurthie but I must say that I love Pete Seeger even more.This man wasn't just a legend in our country he was a legend worldwide in his lifetime.And he was known to be so humble &lowkey and only full of love for all of humanity.I have never heard one harsh or one bad thing about this man in his 94year long lifetime. I so miss his presence on this planet!

There are days I play nothing but their songs...Those days words really meant something...I was fortunate enough to see Pete at a UAW summer picnic when I was about 12 or so...We are fortunate to have Arlo Guthrie still with us..although it's not the same..
Ellen McCullough I moved to Tulsa about 6 years ago. In the downtown area there is this wonderful little Woody Guthrie museum. One day, on a whim I stopped in to see what it was all about. Being from Oklahoma I was aware of Guthrie and that he was somehow important, and was a musician, but very little beyond that. That little museum opened my eyes to a whole beautiful music tradition, as old as America itself, (older in fact) of this beautiful and often tragically poignant folk music. I fell in love with Woody that day and like a sponge, I soaked up everything I could find about him. From there I branched out to the Almanac singers, the Weavers, the wonderful Lee Hayes, and of course this amazing man, Pete Seeger. What I wouldn't give to be able to attend one of his shows and sing along with his wonderful songs.
Just saw your post, Jon...That is so wonderful that there is a Woody Guthrie museum and you were there to see it. They must have had his recordings at this museum, right? We are so very fortunate to live in these times and will always have in our hearts many different genre of music...my Mom used to play the LP's of Beethoven, Bach, etc.. Beethoven is my favorite, though. Then on to folk music which found a special place in my heart..it actually meant something -then as a teenager and still on to Beatles, Stones, Jackson Browne, Pink Floyd, etc..etc.. The Stones were at the top of my list for many, many of my hippie years..still there...but now can't get enough of Tom Petty, and the Heartbreakers..we are so very fortunate to have the Internet allowing us to hear all different kinds of music..Used to have hundreds of 45's, but they got stolen..Have to admit, though, Janis Joplin will always be my #1 female vocalist...always in my heart..The music now isn't, in my opinion, music...my son who is in his 30's isn't into R and R, blues, folk,..but my daughter who is in her early 40's still loves the music of our times..which she was raised on. Hey, if you ever get to D.C./Virginia area, let me know and we could get together and reminisce the days of real music!
I had the opportunity to listen to Pete and to participate in a sing-a-long. It was one of the rare pleasures of life. As it is now I still tear up when I hear "We Shall Overcome".
I grew up on P Seeger and The Weavers ...thanks to my mother. She played along with ..like The Red Army Chorus. Learned ...the Volga Boat song. well. Those gorgeous, basso and tenor harmonies..
I saw Pete Seeger in performance at Brooklyn College in 1966 or 67, took part in all of the harmony, and in that troubled and confused time somehow came out feeling happy and, the best way to describe it is clean. A very special man.
Dano Pierce, may I recommend Father Ron & Friends? They sing the old folk songs, as well as some new material (written by Father Ron). They are heavily influenced by Pete Seeger and Woody Guthrie. They have a TH-cam channel, and have a new song and video which will be released in a few weeks.

He very humbly (and rightly) acknowledges that he "wasn't born to this music but he does his best." Well his best was more than good enough by a country mile in my opinion.
Bless him! What a great performer, great musician and a man of courage! I saw him in 1971 at the Univ. of Wisconsin (Madison). I will never forget that concert----it entertained and uplifted all of us. Thank you for the many decades you devoted to collecting and preserving the best of the great American folk music traditions. Rest in peace, Pete! We loved you.
he was the ultimate performer. I saw him once, and watched how he lead his audience--at one point he realized he had lost our interest and switched in mid song to something more to our taste. It was seamless, and perfectly done. Damn all I miss him.
I met him when he put on a small concert at Keene State College in NH. He was a great guy. I don't think we'll see anyone like him again. Our society has changed so much that anyone who tries to follow in his foot steps wouldn't get very far.
Saw pete twice at UCSD in the mid sixties. He held a free concert for children. There where about 30 kids and their parents. We sang Old MacDonald, This Land is your land, etc. At the time I had no idea how big he was. He was just a guy who loved people, especially kids and he seemed to be there to make us happy. Way better than a day at Disneyland. We sang all the songs I liked from Peter, Paul and Mary. Even got to sing the MTA song!
Really needed to hear this tonight. Beautiful, and so amazing that he challenged the listeners to sing along! I wish to G-d we could all sing together today!

Once in Moscow with only a banjo and a piece of paper with some helpful Russia phrases he got a crowd of 10,000 people who couldn't understand a word of English signing in four part harmony to "Micheal Row the Boat Ashore". There was something of the preacher about Pete Seeger that made people want to join in and sing along. David King Dunaway, in his biography of Seeger "How Can I Keep From Singing" relates that he was told by fans that "I go to a Pete Seeger concert for a hit of him".

Such a hero. I used to watch his Rainbow series on NPR when I was 10, and very soon after I bought my first guitar for $45. He spent some time in the wilderness with other patriots during the blacklist until the Smother Bros put them on their show... "Big Muddy." I talked with Tommy Smothers in a bar five yrs ago, and there's such a story there. Thanks so much for posting this video!
Great to see and hear this wonderful presentation, it takes me back to 1957 and my first RAF Medical Branch posting to RAF Hospital Wegberg, Germany, where a group of us started a ‘skiffle group’. Played at hospital concerts and dances, these were the songs we played. They were fabulous days when entertainment was home made by so many in the days before TV and computer games.wonderful memories.🇬🇧🎼👍

I was a friend, as his son in law was a college roommate of mine, and he and Pete lived near me :-) So I'll share a story: so at dinner one night, Pete told this: Pete and his wife were Guests of the Indian Govt, and they had Govt Security and couldn't just take off and walk around. Pete and his wife were down home 'people' and didn't like that.,.......so.....one night they snuck out and walked around in one of the BIG cities.......their Security was freaked, but they came back unharmed :-)

These videos from Melbourne 1963 are extraordinary. A lot of comments discuss his political or humanitarian message, but simply as a musician and performer, this concert shows hone of the greatest artists - ever - at the peak of his power, displaying not only his total mastery of the idiom but his ability to draw in the audience. I'd have to think this was an unforgettable experience for those in the audience.
In 1964, Pete on his world tour came also to Prague, and my mom took me to his concert. I was a little kid, yet 53 years later, I still remember that concert darn well. Every detail of it! He was an amazing performer indeed!
That Prague concert was apparently a _huge_ experience for everyone who was there. From the stories you read, a whole generation of Czech folk / country musicians was basically born there...
I got the Pete Seeger's and Alan Lomax folksong book. He came to a memorable concert in Rome with Harold Bradley (Folkstudio founder, who passed away April 13th 2021,R.I.P). I volunteered as interpreter. First to get Italians to sing gospels together, they LOVED IT!

Such a hero. I used to watch his Rainbow series on NPR when I was 10, and very soon after I bought my first guitar for $45. He spent some time in the wilderness with other patriots during the blacklist until the Smother Bros put them on their show... "Big Muddy." I talked with Tommy Smothers in a bar five yrs ago, and there's such a story there. Thanks so much for posting this video!

Great to see and hear this wonderful presentation, it takes me back to 1957 and my first RAF Medical Branch posting to RAF Hospital Wegberg, Germany, where a group of us started a ‘skiffle group’. Played at hospital concerts and dances, these were the songs we played. They were fabulous days when entertainment was home made by so many in the days before TV and computer games.wonderful memories.🇬🇧🎼👍

I heard Pete in 1963,or was it 64 here in Israel.He just pulled up a kitchen chair and sang away, what a great folk singer and what we say in Yidush a mensh (translated perhaps as a true decent person ) Thank you !
He'd be appalled by what Israel has gotten away with in Gaza and the West Bank, with U.S. tacit approval. I'm sure he'd sing out against the the practice of apartheid

I was a friend, as his son in law was a college roommate of mine, and he and Pete lived near me :-) So I'll share a story: so at dinner one night, Pete told this: Pete and his wife were Guests of the Indian Govt, and they had Govt Security and couldn't just take off and walk around. Pete and his wife were down home 'people' and didn't like that.,.......so.....one night they snuck out and walked around in one of the BIG cities.......their Security was freaked, but they came back unharmed :-)

These videos from Melbourne 1963 are extraordinary. A lot of comments discuss his political or humanitarian message, but simply as a musician and performer, this concert shows hone of the greatest artists - ever - at the peak of his power, displaying not only his total mastery of the idiom but his ability to draw in the audience. I'd have to think this was an unforgettable experience for those in the audience.
In 1964, Pete on his world tour came also to Prague, and my mom took me to his concert. I was a little kid, yet 53 years later, I still remember that concert darn well. Every detail of it! He was an amazing performer indeed!

That Prague concert was apparently a _huge_ experience for everyone who was there. From the stories you read, a whole generation of Czech folk / country musicians was basically born there...

I stumbled upon this morning what a amazing talent what a great reminder to give peace a chance
I got the Pete Seeger's and Alan Lomax folksong book.
He came to a memorable concert in Rome with Harold Bradley (Folkstudio founder, who passed away April 13th 2021,R.I.P).
I volunteered as interpreter.
First to get Italians to sing gospels together, they LOVED IT!
Something about hearing him speak while building the music up just immediately brings me back to my childhood
