      Not true. One of the first orders California's constitutional convention was to appoint an official English/Spanish translator. Why? Because all of the local Mexican delegates, whose families had been the first settlers, to the convention were only monolingual in Spanish since this was a part of Mexico. Also after the constitution was finalized it was printed in both Spanish and English and then distributed to the general California population.

      California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas were territories of the young Republic of Mexico of 1824 for barely 26 years. Prior to this all was New Spain, governed and controlled by Spain since 1521, the first Spanish conquest. It took three hundred years for Mexico to get its independence from Spain in 1821, became a country and got its name Mexico and flag, and mapped geographically as Mexico. At this time claiming Spain's southwest as territories. Not any of the above named are included as states in Mexico's Constitution. Mexico barely put up a fight in the Mexican American War--during the interim from independence to U.S. conquest, Mexico did not support the northern territories, they were sparsely populated, and too distant from Mexico's core for Mexico to bother with. After U.S. conquest, Mexicans were not even in sight in the southwest or California, as they were not native to the territories. Texas was not populated, thus the young country of Mexico allowed Anglos to populate the area. Realistically, economically the U.S. was a boost for the southwest which was closer to the U.S than Mexico. Neither were the Spanish speaking southwest population Mexican, they were Spanish and did not support the Mexican government in the Mexican American War. Mexicans are foreigners to the U.S.A.

    • @Patty-qt1xb
      @Patty-qt1xb 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Javier smith Mexico did not become Mexico until 1821 when they gained independence from Spain. It was the Spanish who renamed Tenochtitlan Mexico "City" after the Mexica Aztec after the conquest. The Indians territories were known by tribal names such as Xochmilco, Mixcoac, Teotiuacan, thus there was no Mexico at that time 1521. Spain named these territories New Spain--these territories which were never united or under one government now belonged to and under control by Spain. From the valley of Mexico (Aztec area) the territories grew outward in all directions toward different Indians. It took three centuries for these territories to become a nation in 1821, the young nation of the Republic of Mexico, taking the nations name from the Aztec valley of Mexico. "Mexico" not an Indian given name, rather a Spanish given name after the conquest. The Spanish with advanced technology of that day, with the horse and rifle, Europeans skilled warriors opened the way to tierras nuevas (now the U.S. southwest) to the north for further exploration. They found different Indians in the north and Spain set the borders on lands they claimed which was from what is today Mexico to what is today the southwest, Louisiana, Arkansas, Georgia, Florida, Mississippi areas, Pacific coast and more. These were Spanish borderlands. Later claimed by the French then the United States. After Mexico became a nation it claimed California and the SW for only 26 years as territories before U.S. conquest. Mexico did not list these as States in the Mexican Constitution. These were too far to the north--the barren outer edges with hardly any population except for what are U.S. Indians and the descendants of Spanish settlers in northern New Mexico. Thus the young nation of Mexico had no interest in these distant lands. Verified by the fact that Mexico sent no support to the territories, and barely lifted an rifle in defense of these territories during the Mexican American War. The new Republic of Mexico granted American Anglo to settle Texas as there were no Mexicans in the area. America--during the late 1700s and early 1800s nations were made from American territories. From Alaska/Canada to Argentina. All had been Indian territories, claimed by Indians within close proximity to each particular area. Each tribe was indigenous to those areas. Each tribes knew their environment and had an inborn sense of where they belonged. Tribes did not trust tribes 10 miles away., much less tribes a world away-view even part of America by air-America is humongous. Indians attacked Indians, pillaged villages, they were not friendly to their own DNA. No one can tell me that a United States Indian will agree that their lands belonged to all Indians in the Americas. The southwest U.S. Indians do not recognize themselves as Mexican. They were not Mexican when the Spanish arrived in 1521 and are not Mexican in 2019. Pick up a history book and learn about the history of Mexico and of the United States.

    • @Patty-qt1xb
      @Patty-qt1xb 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      REAL EMPIRE They dominate because Mexico is in close proximity to the southwest. Just as Florida is dominated by Cubans. By far, most Mexicans are immigrants to the U.S. The exceptions were populations who were descendants of Spanish colonies or indigenous Indians of those regions who remained in the U.S homelands after American conquest. THESE WERE FEW IN NUMBER, SPARSE POPULATIONS. Later Mexicans populated border town areas over the years, staying connected to Mexico; then the Mexican Revolution, then mass migration starting in the 1960s and increasing toward the end of the century and more this century bringing multitudes of migration to the SW.

      Columbus was born in Genoa, Italy in 1451. King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain funded his 3 ship voyage to Asia who brought a couple "Indians(?)" back to the Spanish court.
      (Now you know why native Americans are wrongfully called Indians.)
      They were the parents of Katherine of Aragon who married King Arthur of England. Arthur died a couple months after exchanging wedding vows and the RCC required that his younger brother, Henry who was 15 at the time, marry the widowed queen. Soon after that event, Henry excommunicated the RCC and robbed it of all of their island riches. And that, ladies and gents, is why the major religion in the UK is called The Church of England. Now you know part of the rest of the story.

      As a Canadian, I don't understand why some Americans hate Hispanic people. You should be grateful that you were born in a rich country like America, because just imagine if it were the other way around, you would go crazy. Before criticizing, you should put yourself in the shoes of others and understand that not everyone had the privilege of being born in a rich country like us.

He didn't discover that the world was round, he grossly underestimated the size of the earth, he falsely thought he had landed in the Indies, he was responsible for genocide and slavery everywhere he went, he never set foot in what is now the United States and he died poor. Dangic23, I’m so sorry to burst your bubble, but many scholar studies now suggest that COLUMBUS WAS NOT ITALIAN. New evidence shows that he was a Spaniard whose family (surname: Colom) concealed their Sephardic Jewish origins to avoid the Inquisition and move upward in medieval Spain’s society. He married a Portuguese princess to gain access to Spanish royal circles and get the support he needed to fund his enterprises. Google it! 🤗

    I lived in a remote, small town in New Mexico in the 1970's during my U.S. Forest Service career. There was much that I disliked about being there, but it wasn't the people. Although there was a lot of poverty the people in this town were wonderful and friendly. The population of the town was 85% Hispanic, 10% Navajo and 5% Anglo. It is good for a person to live as a minority somewhere during their life. What I saw there was the true Hispanic culture, not anything like the gangs in some large cities around the U.S. The Hispanic culture, in my experience, is all about respect and family. I learned a great deal about people while living there and became a much more people oriented person as a result. The experience was very good for me and helped me in future successes. I feel lucky to have had the experience.

NM has two Spanish speaking cultures, Spanish in the north, since 1600; and Mexican mestizo culture in the south since 1880. New Mexico is no longer the NM you experienced, it is overwhelmed by mass Mexican migration, which has changed the cultural atmosphere especially in the north.

    • @hiphipjorge5755

      @@red.river6575 that’s bullshit. Watch some DNA tests, New Mexicans are mestizos just like most Latin Americans.
      The only parts of the former Spanish empire where Spanish people remained in larger numbers are in regions of Venezuela, Cuba, Argentina, and Uruguay, and thats because of mass migrations in the 1880s-1960s.
      Unless they were wealthy, the Spanish colonists pretty much all mixed in with native peoples and the African slaves throughout the empire, including in what would become New Mexico.
      And Mexico wasn’t nearly as violent as it is now until the Drug War started in 2005 when Felipe Calderón sent the military out to fight them, and it has spiraled out of control since.

      Native Texan. Descend from the Spanish who settled the southwest 300 years before the Anglos "liberated" us. It would be hard to go back considering we descend from the Spanish and Indians making a new race of Mestizos. So technically we were here first, second, and third.

      What are you talking about? Nearly everywhere was sparsely populated in the 17 and 1800s. Even to this day Alaska and North Dakota are sparsely populated, that doesn’t give Canada the right to annex our land. There were many tribes in Texas. I myself know I have Apache ancestors. Texas itself is a word from the Caddo tribe. The Isleños came to Texas and meet up with a pre-existing settlement. So the Canary Islanders, who had Spanish roots themselves, meet up with other Spaniards who were already settled. I also descend from the 13 families that founded La Villa de San Fernando (San Antonio). Bottom line those are my ancestors and this is our home!

      Most Hispanics are mestizo. You fail to grasp this. Those natives were us. Even if you believe the demographics (which I believe are inflated) Texas population in 1836 is 30,000 Anglos, 3500 Hispanics, 14,000 natives. So in reality it is 30k to 17500. Also Texas southern border was the nueces river, so conveniently the propagandist are leaving off all the Hispanics that lived south of the nueces and in the Rio grande valley.

      So the population was actually pretty even, but Mexico had restricted immigration by 1830. Upwards of 70 to 80% of the Anglos were illegal immigrants. Crockett, Travis, and Houston were all illegals. Only two of the 60 signers of the declaration of independence were native Texans.

    Nick, I'm going to disagree with you starting at 1:25. Before the "United States of America" was a country, the population indeed was made up of native Americans all the way from what is today Canada down to Tierra del Fuego, Argentina. Central America and the Caribbean islands were inhabited exclusively by native Americans up until the arrival of the Europeans and (then) Africans. The term "Latino" is inaccurately interchanged with "Hispanic" when Latino more properly describes people whose culture makeup and language is the result of the mixture of peoples whose primary language derives from "Latin" (i.e.: Italians, French, Portuguese, Romanian, Spanish).
    The term 'Hispanic' on the other hand describes people whose culture and language derive 'specifically' from Spanish. Thus the term 'Hispanic' in Latin America for example, would EXCLUDE people from "Brazil." Brazilians are not Hispanic, they are "Latin Americans". Therefore all Hispanics (Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean and some of the South American countries) are Latinos, but not all Latinos are Hispanic (Brazilians). The other thing we should keep in mind is that the term "Hispanic" is not a race. It's an ethnic group. Within the Hispanic population we have whites, blacks, asians, native Americans and everything in between. A Hispanic can be of any color or race. The US Census Bureau should (if it hasn't already) make the correction and not define/categorize "Hispanic" as a race. Hope that helps clear up the confusion somewhat.
