  • The sixth video in the Ranwell Video series. This stretch of line crossing the A5 near Oswestry has not seen any trains for a lot of years, but we see 20101 and 20151 with a stone train taken on 14/07/1988.

WOW! In all the 15 years of going over that level crossing, I've never actually seen it operate once! This is a first for me!

It’s now an abandoned train line the video was filmed in the 1980s/90s

thank you for uploading this footage, have recently been driving to Bangor and I love driving the A5, its such a gorgeous road. I was very curious about the level crossing on the A5, as it looks very overgrown, but at least it looks as tho the barriers/technical equipment are still there. Will be amazing if the line ever re-opens, as a lover of diesel trains (from Hastings, so love DMU's) seeing these lovely trains going across the mysterious level crossing was a real bonus ! thanks for the upload ;)

Some great footage there, thanks. 🙂
My late grandparents used to live in Llynclys and I spent many a year growing up walking and exploring the disused lines (and skimming ballast across the lake 😂)

Brilliant video, the Cambrian Railway Society is trying to reopen this portion of the line between Gobowen and Oswestry. What with today's health & safety, Pentre Clawd crossing is a sticky issue

I dont think there is a chance now with the volume of traffic and so close to a roundabout.

@@garethjones8047 agreed, the thinking is that the track would be lowered and the road elevated to form and underpass/tunnel for both former crossings on the route

@@dangerousbrian9949 yes that would be a good solution, but costly.

@@garethjones8047 Wrong. The railway was there long before the new road. The railway by law has running rights over the road traffic, no matter how busy the road. Despite the line being mothballed in 1988, and the road being built only 3 years previous in 85, the railway by law has a 99 year running right of way over road traffic. Sorry to sound boring but I've been a railwayman since 1975, and some things just come naturally. This line will flourish in the coming years you'll see.

I’m still intrigued by how the two recently donated pacer units got from Gobowen stn to Oswestry heritage stn? Can’t find an answer? Was it a sneaky move over this crossing during the night?

Presumably, I travelled from Shrewsbury to Wrexham with Arriva a few years ago with my parents and at gobowen we saw the junction and the Oswestry platform, there was the class 144s there, they'd travelled under their own power to gobowen then I think they would've used the crossing

I haven't been able to find any exact dates, although I suspect it was not all that long after this video was filmed. I've seen photos of the quarry at Blodwell looking long abandoned even by 1997.

@@stephensrailways Thanks very much for the quick reply. I was trying to age the footage by looking at the reg plate on the Mondeo. It's a C reg which is 86 so would guess this is a little after that as the car doesn't look new. I was thinking early to mid 90s

The passenger service from Oswestry to Gobowen stopped in 1966 and the ballast trains to Blodwell carried on using the line up until 1989. There are serious plans afoot to reopen the line including the halt at Park Hall for the hospital but crossing the A5 is a problem to be solved first. Options are under current consideration so watch out for future developments.
