what a nice video...at 63 ( TODAY!) I got a terrier dachshund mix she is so wonderful I had no idea how much how she would change my life, like No more living alone depression! anyway I really enjoyed your instructional video on cleaning their ears thank you so much for making that video you seem to have a good spirit and soul! and it wasn't you that clued me in it was your little friend who was getting her ears cleaned! :-)

Larry Miller Hello! You and I are both the same 65, so I can certainly relate to your living alone and depression. Sir, you gave yourself a gift, a well deserved one, at best, when you adopted that Lil' fella , and brought him to your home. Not only will he be your most loyal companion, but he will give you unconditional love for the duration of your natural life. My only hope is that you went to a shelter that euthanizes the unwanted animals, to make space for the newbies.
If not, I can live with that also. Lol!! Anyway, you did such a good deed. Do you believe in karma, I do...... P.S. hope you and your furry friend, are doing well....!?

Thank you so much for this. I have a 3 month old pug and it is pure hell right now to clean his ears. He practically screams and jerks around and a complete wiggle butt that I have to have my boyfriend hold him for me. I'm going to try this next time. Is your ear solution cold or just room temp? If you have any other tips on keeping him still while I do this I would great appreciate it

I have a miniature bulldog (he's 55 lbs, not exactly mini!) who has the same ear type as the pup you show in your video. He hates the ear cleaning, runs when I bring out the bottle. I can get his ears filled, but cleaning them out after that is difficult. Is using baby wipes an ok thing to use for wiping them out?

Thank you Monique. I have four big dogs and the vet charges me $7 for each cleaning for each dogs' ears. I try to use your method but the my doggies but I'm still afraid to use the q-tips as they are nervous too. And can I use baby-wipe in case I don't have the ear solution? cleaning your dogs ears looked very easy but for me i have Labradors. Cleaning their ears is extremely difficult. They dont like it and as soon as the cleaner goes in they shake and keeping them still is also not easy. After doing it twice a day a few weeks ago they would not even come to me when i called them. I also tried treats. I started to do this because both my labs were shaking their head all the time.please give me some advice Monigue

my puppy had an ear infection.. I tried hard to make her understand and a positive experience.. but it wasn't and a little force in the correct place was the only (and right) way. I gave her lots of praise for it and carried on trying to make her understand it was nessasry to make her better.. she's come round to it now.
p.a. I've been recommended using detol wipes twice a week on her to keep things clean for a while

I just adopted a puppy from our local shelter. I took her to her first vet visit a few days ago. The vet's assistant was cleaning my pup's ears (she has ear mites) and my pup was howling and yelping. I was really upset with the way she was handling my pup but she kept telling me that you can't go too far into a dog's ear and that it wasn't hurting her. The vet eventually came back into the room to see what the fuss was about and told the assistant to use a distraction (a treat). My question is how accurate is the vet assistant's statement about not being able to hurt a dog's ear during cleaning?

The hardest part is keeping my big dog still while I do it. The wetness in his ears drives him insane! I also just switched from using a very harsh smelling ear cleaning solution to just straight witch hazel. He seems to like it better. I will try your method & hope it helps make the process quicker & easier for both him & I (fingers crossed) :)

Your zymox was expired. hehe great video!! I have a french bulldog that has an ear infection. She's under veterinarian care and been prescribed Otomax, and baytril. It's been a week and i'm not seeing much improvement. Lots' of head tilting, lethargy, and sadness for the poor little thing. Her ears were cleaned three days ago, but I haven't been doing it every day. SHould I? I was told to do a follow up in three weeks, but I don't necessarily want to keep her on antibiotics for that long if her condition isn't improving. Would the Otomax be perpetuating the balance problem if it's not applied correctly?

Great video Monique, not only did you provide the steps, you included the logic behind the steps as well. Just became a fan, so this might be something you covered in a previous video. Claw trimming, YIKES! The white claws are easier, but the black are impossible! Would you please do a video covering this and if you have any cat tidbits, that would be extremely helpful. Living on a farm you see some interesting things, and one of the barn cat's claws are beginning to curl. Any help would be great.

    • @KeepWagging

I think it's time to see your veterinarian. Depending on the infection it may not be able to be resolved with cleaner. Also, does she like when you rub her ear or back away from you because it is painful? Some bacteria can cause ulceration in the ear canal.

Quite by accident I came across a method of cleaning the dog's ears that is simple and easy with no discomfort to the dogs. I apply a drop of sulfodene, which is a canine topical antiseptic, into each year. It softens the wax and allows the wax to flow by itself out of the dog's ears. This procedure completely eliminated the need for the flushing, the Q-tips, the dryers, and even the need to pluck out the hair. All that is needed is to keep the hair short within the canal by using a blunt nose scissor.

My 7 year old pibble has had ear wax buildup for about a year, only in the one ear. I've been trying my best to clean out using wipes but I've been hesitant on much else considering it's such a sensitive area. I'm going to go to the store to get some solution tomorrow. Thanks for the tips and a beautiful model. She's so adorable! I'm a sucker for bully breeds 😍🐶

Hi! Make sure you use an ear cleaner that has a surfactant in it to break up the wax if that's what it is. If it becomes a chronic issue I would have that ear checked!

Thank you for this video!!! I only have 1 question. While I realize this is an old video, while watching i noticed the ear cleaner you were using was expired. Is it harmful to use expired clearer? I'm not trying to be a jerk, that is a legit question. Thanks :)

Thanks so much for the info. I am about to clean my 12 yr-old black lab/grayhound/golden retriever's ears for the first time. My old guy is the best dog ever (sorry to those of you who think you had it ;) but lately his ears seem to be bothering him. Also, I am aware that his hearing is bad. I attributed it to his advanced age but after this video, I am hopeful his ears just need a good cleaning. Thanks for your great video!

      Hi Monique,
I just found this post! Yes, thanks to your video I have been able to clean my old boys ears without any problem. He did shake some crud out but, as for his hearing, I don't think it was just dirty old ears. He is a wonderfully happy and healthy old guy but his hearing seems just to be reflective of his age. Thanks again for your great video, it really helped me! :)

Thank you, very helpful video Monique :) My last dog always had clean ears. But our new pup, seems to have one ear loaded with dirt and wax. I was wondering how to approach such a delicate cleaning job. I didn't know I could fill the ear with solution, then massage (great idea). Just wondering, would it be safe for the dog, if I used the ear-cleansing solution for a human ear, or is that not advised?

My dog has been going crazy shaking her head and scratching at her right ear. Our vet said it may be ear mites but had trouble verifying due to my dog not letting her near ear. I just preformed these steps and so far they seemed to have worked. My dog is a German shepherd/Chow mix so she has some big ears lol

Thanks for this. I have a basset/border collie who hates having her ears cleaned, but it's gotta be done...maybe your method will work a little better than what I was shown. Wish me luck!
