What gets me is that the prior owners must have known about some of this, and they never disclosed it. I could never, in good conscious, sell a place that would be unhealthy and such a safety hazard. That place was ready to catch fire at any time in several ways. The bathroom floor was ready to go. The dryer vent in the garage would allow carbon monoxide to go back in the house. What a mess, and she thought it only needed a little bit of cosmetic work done. Mike Holmes and his crew are always the absolute best. It's great to see them again! The hugs are great at the end!

    • @user-hn6sk5fw4g
      @user-hn6sk5fw4g ปีที่แล้ว

Not necessarily. The first home I bought my home inspector didn't catch 2 major items. When I went to sell the buyer's home inspector caught them. Both were structural items. Two roof trusses were cut into making them useless; and in the basement there was a crawl space that was being supported by nothing but loose large rocks.

And his Team, even with the level of stress and malfukkkkktions remain professional, VERY PROFESSIONAL, and they just do the RIGHT THING. This woman is so lucky, and there are literally hundreds of thousands of these problems all across US/Canada due to the unprofessional nature of unethical contractors/handymen. If you think hiring Professionals is expensive, try doing the job OVER with professionals you should have hired to begin with, with signed contracts and everything detailed.

This is why you need to take even a very small water leak very ,very seriously! What started as a simple tub change for cosmetic reasons in our guest bathroom ended with a total doen to the studs rebuild! We found wood rot in the floor joist that led into our dining room as well.we had to replace floor joist ,subfloor, walls and then all the finished floor ,sheetrock etc. You get the idea. It was very expensive. What we found was that it was all caused by the caulking leaking around the tub/shower and a very tiny leak from the shower valve. When I say tiny ,I mean it was so small of a leak it was basically just moist around the valve ,but it did it for years because it was small it didn't get noticed.

Mike would have loved the house I grew up in. Due to, uh, repeated, uh, plumbing issues (lets just leave it at that) over the years the bathroom and laundry room floors were toast. Had about the structural integrity of wet toast in fact. But short of a good look in the right places, one could easily miss that fact because everything else was solid, including the floor joists supporting the toast, er floor. We could easily have hidden it when we sold the house, but unlike so many, we made a point of disclosing the issue.

HALF the air was leaking into the attic from improper ductwork, none of which was insulated. The home inspector gave the house a clean bill of health!

Since this place is so bad because of shoddy workmanship when it was constructed, and later patched up, it makes you wonder what the neighboring houses adjoining it are like! 😮
It's scary to think that after this one house is renovated, (Amazing job, guys!) it could all be for naught and could burn down afterward because the adjoining houses are likely built just as shoddy as this one was! The electrical fire hazards in this house were horrendous! ...And that wasn't the only hazard- mold in the wall, loose 2' x 4's, etc. etc. 😳😓 The inspector either was not doing a thorough enough job, OR he CHOSE to 'look away' because he could see just how bad this really was. A super sad situation!
It would be advisable for the neighbors in this row home to get THEIR houses checked out and re-inspected by your men. 👌

It's the distance from the window to the regulator intake that is important. You can add a pipe to the bottom of the regulator to move the intake three feet to the right and have an operable window in the basement.

i use to work in a hotel as a maintenance person i use to fix bathtub stalls with the green board and 15-minute mud then i would tile over it all in one hour. i learned to do it fast because the previous maintenance people used regular drywall and mud and a tile or three or four fell off the wall and hit a guest in the head. i had so much stuff to fix but they would only let me fix it a little at a time.

Piece of advice from personal experience although this applies to potential buyers and current owners/ tennants regardless, keep a close eye on the drywall, if it looks off take a closer look...
I was once renovating the master bedroom for my mother in her current home (I was a rather handy teenager who was good with things that didn't require permits, I flat out refused to touch those jobs), at the time she had lived there for almost 10 years or so, I noticed that the drywall looked strange and mentioned it to her saying that I should investigate...
All I did was jently poke it with my finger and I poked a hole all the way through, at this point I mentioned that I would have to tear down the drywall and replace it...
My mother got an idea of just how bad it was moments later when she heard me screaming her full name, demanding her to get to the other side of the house and see the problem imediately.
To our horror underneath the drywall, all the wood framing was in such poor condition that you couldn't even use it to make tooth picks with...
This was an exterior load bearing wall, my mom called the Condo association who sent someone to fix it... I later found out that the person was a general handyman and had no buisness touching the job in the first place and that they only looked at and fixed what they could see and never opened up the walls to find out just how extensive the damage was...
After some time We learned that the damage was caused by termites that had not been dealt with but left to continue destroying the house, eventually the city became involved and had to condem the house until it could be fixed by actual contractors who pulled permits, something that the CA never did (I did tell my mother at the time that permits were needed for the job but because the CA and the general handyman said that it was not necessarry they...)... In the end they had to repair half of the exterior walls of both floors of the house and add a new structural beam in the basement.
I should mention that in that housing the CA is responsible for the exterior of the house such as the roof and siding as well as the structural parts, wile the home owner is responsible for the inside and before anyone points it out... Yes the CA screwed up, but in their limited deffence, the insurance company would only pay out $20, 000 to fix the entire neighbourhood and what work was done on my mothers house alone, was more than double that.
Thankfully the damage was fixed and the termites were dealt with, I just hate to ask what of the houses around us? They all had to be treated for termites but my mothers house was the only one that got opened up and fixed...H

House was only 26 years old? Built around 1980 or so. Hard to believe they used fuses in the electrical panel unless I'm missing something. The sideways panels I've seen in some other episodes is something one won't see in the states, but common in Britain.

Thanks Mike and CREW; You ALL make a house safe, secure and well insulated. What if you work with a good window & door company in Canada. There are a few. You have excellent plumbing, electrical, insulation and HVAC work. But consider the windows triple pane or better. Because it will help with keeping the house much more energy efficient! I am sure that bedroom windows was not the best for insulation. There is a window company that does 7 ply insulated glass in Canada. I believe it will be a much improved factor to the overall problems you find with houses!

what hated about watching his tv show was what the true cost would be to fix all this stuff yourself.
Homes did at one point start pricing out in another show, Holmes worked on but most people I talked with thought this was all being paid for through the show. lol

Year after year ex-husbands do repairs themselves due to the actual cost of repairs then do more damage than good for the sake of the families facing generational trauma of indifference. when if they had done it correctly, they wouldn't be facing the generational trauma of indifference. So glad she was able to get assistance with her home.

When she talks about the ugly kitchen, I have to think "how times have changed." Most of the kitchens I have dealt with have been tiny galley size kitchens. I would have considered myself lucky to have that many cupboards (and it looked like everything matched.)

I would like to add my 2 cents. Mike Holmes says a fire could start from the dryer. My firemen friends tell me the same thing. Replace the flex lines (as many as possible) with steel. Mike talked about electrical rubbing steel and getting a shock from the whole house. When I was installing phones in mobile homes in the 1970s, several would shock us when touching the door knob because some electric wire was frayed and touching the metal covering the outer walls. He says it's a fire hazard. A friend's home was a total loss recently from a house fire that started with an electrical problem. One thing Mike didn't mention is how dangerous aluminum wire is. If every connection isn't done properly by a licensed electrician, your house could burn down. A friend of mine discovered an improper connection in his aluminum wiring and there were sparks. He had to have an electrician replace the entire wire run to make it safe. Holmes isn't joking about the dangers. They are very real.
